September 18, 2010 at Texas Tech

So Texas Tech released their 2010 football schedule yesterday, and typically no one cares outside of the American Legion post in Lamesa. But then there was this: One of the highest viewer-rated games in ABC history, the 2008 home game against Texas is continuing to pay dividends. The game was moved ahead in the schedule this season to provide the network an attractive early-season Big 12 game, and the same has been done

Rick Neuheisel On The Spread, Vince Young, OL Recruiting & NFL

Posted by Scipio Tex on April 9th, 2009 under

Let's talk spread A thought-provoking interview from Bruin Nation with Rick Neuheisel about myriad subjects of great interest. Neuheisel has grown a lot since his days at Colorado (hiding behind Cedric Cormier's couch - allegedly) and I respect his views though I don't find myself in raging agreement with all of them. This comment about Vince Young and the feasibility of a true NFL spread captured my attention:

UCLA Win…The Grades

Posted by Trips Right on December 4th, 2008 under Basketball

For about the first 15 minutes of the contest Texas looked like it had finally turned the corner offensively. They played with tremendous tempo cutting, screening, and passing with urgency that created mismatches and uncertainty in UCLA's normally aggressive man to man defense. The ball movement and tempo led to great shots and offensive rebounding opportunities that allowed Texas to exploit its huge advantage along the frontcourt. And then there came the

UCLA Preview

Posted by Trips Right on December 4th, 2008 under Basketball

The Texas Longhorn hoops squad battles traditional powerhouse UCLA tonight at the Erwin Center at 8 central on ESPN 2 tonight in what should be the second early season test for the Horns. The last true test was a disappointing loss to Notre Dame, a game in which the Horns failed to find any offensive rhythm, leaving points on the floor by taking too many bad shots early in the shot clock in what

A Pretty Amazing Fact for the Day

This is one hell of a stat: Rick Neuheisel's first loss as UCLA coach was by 59 points. Pete Carroll's 14 losses at USC have been by a COMBINED 59 points. Wow. Thanks to Senator Blutarsky for the heads up on that one.

Phil Fulmer is the new Lloyd Carr

Posted by HenryJames on September 2nd, 2008 under Football

Well, not really new. They've always been the same coach. Recruit well yet still consistently lose to biggest rival. Continually make boneheaded coaching decisions yet somehow win a national championship. Fulmer went and laid another egg on the West Coast last night. The myth that Fulmer is an elite coach (if it still exists at this point) is based on his 45-5 record from '95-'98. He's 80-35 since then. Not bad, but that's not good

Homophobic SEC Gets Punked by Sweater Vest

Posted by dedfischer on September 2nd, 2008 under Football

For 2 quarters, former SEC heavyweight champion Tennessee and Coach Phil Fulmer asserted a ground and pound strategy that lent itself to a decisive lead on the judges' scorecard against upstart UCLA and Coach Rick Neuheisel.  However, like a seasoned Brazilian jiu-jitsu veteran, Neuheisel kept the match within reach and at the last moment, sunk a triangle choke on the winded and out of shape Fulmer forcing him to tap in the last round.  Fulmer was quoted after

Just before Signing Day, we talked here about the Recruiting Rankings analysis that SMQ performed and he concluded how accurately Rivals was predicting winning percentages. "Rivals was very, very good at picking the top teams – of the top 25 winningest teams of the last six years, all were either pegged in or very near their respective positions by the recruiting rankings or achieved them by winning against overwhelmingly lower-ranked opposition; of the
