Texas Longhorns Defense: YPPA Dominance

Posted by BrickHorn on November 8th, 2009 under Football

Texas is currently #1 in total defense. That's amazing in its own right. What's even more impressive is the Horns' abject utter dominance in yards per play allowed. Texas is #1 on that measure as well, yielding only 3.53 YPPA. Alabama is second-best at 3.89 YPPA. The difference between #1 Texas and #2 Alabama (0.46 YPPA) is roughly equal to the difference between #2 Bama and #10 Clemson

Defensive Stats: Texas Longhorns @ Oklahoma State Cowboys

The key to stopping Oklahoma State’s offense is to stop them from running the football. If they can run the ball, they can get in a lot of manageable third downs.

If total yards from scrimmage determined wins and losses, Tech would have won soundly on Saturday.

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Just a quick update on the adjusted stats and ratings page. The last paragraph now contains a link to all scheduled 2009 games and under the box score heading the link opens a popup window (no ads!) with a quick reference matchup preview for that game. Obviously once the game is played that will change to the actual box score. As stated on the page, these will be based on

Correlation Update

More Stats and Their Correlation to Winning Percentage

Just a table update in this post. The first table is based on substats from various phases of the game while the second table is composed of margin stats. The margins were broken out because they will clearly correlate better to winning. Points stats are still included for informational purposes only, further complaints that it's already obvious that

Which Statistics Correlate Best to Winning?

The Texas Staff Takes the Plunge into Statistical Analysis

Will Muschamp famously declared that stats are for losers. Greg Davis? It turns out that he wants to know which stats are for winners. It has come to Barking Carnival's attention that the Texas staff, and Davis in particular, ran some numbers to determine which stats correlate best to wins. My excitement that the Texas staff was willing

Bradford vs McCoy stat of the day

Posted by HenryJames on August 2nd, 2009 under Football

Got this from FiesoleHorn over on BurntOrangeBeat. Over the last 40 minutes of the Texas game, Sam leads his team on 2 scoring drives while throwing two picks. Over the last 40 minutes of the Florida game, Sam leads his team on 1 scoring drive while throwing two picks. 80 minutes of football, a combined 3 scoring drives and 4 interceptions... in the two biggest games of the year against the only two legit defenses faced all

Let’s Review the Big 12 South

Posted by TaylorTRoom on November 25th, 2008 under Football

Well, we have one weekend left, and all of the B12 south teams are playing each other.  Each game has national and conference title implications.  Let's take a look at the matchups with an eye to conference game statistics, and see if we get any insight.  Note- I'm using the stats from the conference games only (seven games for each school).  I'm going to pair schools with their upcoming opponent. Offense: UT  464.7 ypg, 40.0 ppg TAMU  379.3

Stats are for losers

"Stats are for losers," Muschamp said. "I like winning games." While I tend to agree with Muschamp on almost everything (like the the sun rising in the West and that the earth is flat), I do take exception with the stats part. I, too, like to win games. I like digging into the stats – see the college fantasy football obsession or playing rotisserie baseball when it required the Monday USA Today sports

Ratings and Notes

Posted by Huckleberry on September 28th, 2008 under Football

First, here are the Division 1-A games only and the all divisions included ratings. Some big movement, of course, but I would still give them a week or two. By the end of 10/11 they should be fairly trustworthy. Perhaps even next week. A few notes on our first four games: - This is the third time in Texas history that the football team has won at least four straight games by
