Texas To Pac-10 Story Revisited

Posted by srr50 on July 14th, 2009 under Baseball

When Arkansas jumped to the SEC in 1990 the final stage for the demise of the SWC was set in motion. The league had already been doomed by various factors, not the least of which was the unbridled cheating that had been rampant during the 1980's, but the Razorbacks defection sped up the process. Back then Texas was ready to jump to the Pac-10. Again, outside factors stopped that idea in its tracks, and the retiring

On This Independence Day, Thank God You’re Not an Aggie

Posted by EyesOfTX on July 4th, 2009 under Football

As you're going about your July 4 today, remembering the brilliant men who founded this nation, honoring all those brave souls who have fallen to ensure what freedoms you have remaining, cooking up slabs of fatty meats on your grill, and consuming large quantities of beer, wine, vodka, tequila or some combination thereof, be sure to take just a moment out of your time to thank your parents, a counselor, a mentor or whomever else it might

Bud Shrake on Abe Lemons

Posted by srr50 on May 9th, 2009 under Uncategorized

Bud Shrake was one of a stable of writers for Sports Illustated when the feature article was the best part of the magazine. I thought this feature would give those weren't around then a taste of Shrake's ability. Here is one Texas legend on another.

Gary Cartwright Loses His Best Friend

Posted by srr50 on May 8th, 2009 under Basketball

And we lost one of the best damn sportswriters Texas ever knew. Bud Shrake was one of the last of the dying breed that Scipio writes about in this post Bud Shrake, Gary Cartwright, Blackie Sherrod, Dan Jenkins, Dan Cook, Mickey Herskowitz, Jack Gallagher, Dave Cambell and Lou Maysel. These were my childhood heroes. These were wordsmiths who made you want to head down to the newstand on Sunday and buy every out-of-town paper they

Gary Cartwright on the Death of Newspaper Sportswriting

Posted by Scipio Tex on May 8th, 2009 under Uncategorized

Gary Cartwright opines provocatively. You can also read more Cartwright here. Gary Cartwright is a living Texas treasure and he drives this particular pitch out of the park, past the cotton-candy concessions, over the train tracks, and through a Chevy Corsica's windshield. In the footprints of these giants we now find ants. The greats of yesteryear have been replaced by dabblers, hacks, and homers, glorified fans with press

Sports Broadcasting Loses Two Gentlemen

Posted by srr50 on April 17th, 2009 under Baseball

Harry Kalas and Merle Harmon, two longtime big-league broadcasters died this week. Kalas, the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies for almost 40 years was also the voice of NFL films after the legendary John Facenda. The passing of Kalas brought out many tributes from other reporters. Kalas broke into broadcasting while in the military and stationed out in Hawaii. He was working minor league baseball when the Houston Colt 45's came into existence and he got

Loving Lists

Posted by TaylorTRoom on November 4th, 2008 under Football

It was interesting to read the national media yesterday, and discover a few things.  Namely- everybody saw the UT-TT game, everybody thought it was a terrific game (really a great promotion for the B12), and people are impressed with both teams.  I got to thinking about where it ranked in the history of big games in Texas, and this is what I came up with.  Here follows a list of the greatest games played in

Texas-OU: It Is Kind of a Big Deal Pt. 2

Posted by srr50 on October 8th, 2008 under Football

Taylor TRoom makes an impressive argument for the value of the Texas-OU contest being played in Dallas. He bases it on the neutral site and the national championship implications of the rivalry. Today I would like to make the case for keeping the game the way it is, and where it is, from another angle. This is a unique rivalry because even when the stakes are low on the national scene, or when both teams

TX-OU 1968: Bad To The ‘Bone

Posted by srr50 on October 7th, 2008 under Football

When Texas went to Fayetteville in October of 1965, the Horns were riding high on the hog. Texas was #1 in one poll - #2 in the other. From the start of the 1961 season until that Saturday, Texas was 44-3-1. They had taken up permanent residence in the Top 5, with one National Championship and two near misses. Arkansas drove the length of the field late in the 4th quarter to secure a dramatic 27-24

The More Things Change…

Posted by TaylorTRoom on October 6th, 2008 under Football

Years ago, on a different board, I posted a transcript of Blair Cherry's 1951 Saturday Evening Post article "Why I Quit Coaching Football".  Cherry had been an extremely successful HS coach in the '30s, was Bible's chief assistant at Texas, and had coached Texas to a 32 - 10 - 1 record from 1947 - 1950. Basically, he quit because the Texas fans expected to win every game, and complained about his coaching through
