Fiesta Bowl Post-Mortem Part IV: Offense & Special Teams

Posted by Scipio Tex on January 9th, 2009 under Football

Offense A great Longhorn points to Tim Tebow's father Quan Cosby was sensational and my Game MVP. 14 catches, 171 yards, 2 TDs, physical blocking that created Colt's TD run, the game winning score. There's something deeply satisfying about seeing a quality guy enjoy success. I admire him precisely for his imperfections as a player. When a guy with projected combine grades that scream 5th round can

Fiesta Bowl Post Mortem Part III: Texas Defense

Posted by Scipio Tex on January 9th, 2009 under Football

Thoughts on OSU O This was the best game Ohio State played all year. This Buckeye offense did not exist in the September blowout loss to USC or, to a lesser degree, in the November loss to Penn State. A healthy #28 was a load and he has sweet feet for such a big man, but when Muckelroy rang his bell in the 4th, I think Wells got spooked and decided to declare

Fiesta Bowl Wrap Up Part II: Game Flavor

Posted by Scipio Tex on January 9th, 2009 under Football

Best told in vignettes An Oklahoma fan decked out in crimson with a goatee and the leathery skin of an oil field services worker, with the obligatory Marlboro stains on his fingers and teeth, spends the entire pre-game sprinting around the stadium concourse pointing to his national championship game participation t-shirt and screaming Boomer Sooner. We seem him make at least three passes. He's so ridiculously stupid that even the Ohio State fans

Fiesta Bowl Wrap Up Part I: Pre-Game

Posted by Scipio Tex on January 9th, 2009 under Football

Arrival This game was a business trip. No extended stay, no spa holiday, no trips to Sedona or Scottsdale to satisfy the demands of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce. This was a trip about football and everything I did was built around that. The Fiesta Bowl is uniquely structured to facilitate that clarity of purpose. Landing in Phoenix is like plopping down in a dusty isolation tank: desert mountain landscapes interspersed with

Big 10 BCS Road Record

Posted by srr50 on December 17th, 2008 under Football

Yesterday began a look at the BCS conferences and their non-conference road schedules during the BCS Era. The theory being that road records are a legitimate indication of the strength of a team and a conference since you face more hardships and usually tougher opponents when away from home. Today the Big 10 Big 10 Non-Conference Road Results Total                                            vs BCS 61-58    51%                                32-47    40.5% vs. ACC 6-2   75% vs Big East 9-3   75% vs Big 12 5-10   33% vs Pac 10 6-18   25% vs SEC 0-4    0% vs

It’s Bowl Season: Time For Some Serious SWAG

Posted by srr50 on December 10th, 2008 under Football

Forget about the BCS. Forget about a future playoff system. It's time to look at what the college post-season is all about. It's all about giving. It's bailout time for college football teams, and bowl officials are more than happy to perform the role of Congress in doling out the goodies. In fact, for all but one of the BCS Bowls, there will be a private Sony store for the teams.

Glib take on last week’s games

Posted by HenryJames on September 22nd, 2008 under

I finally got to sit down and watch some games this weekend. Alabama is not as good as their ranking. They're very one dimensional on offense, and John Parker Wilson Lewis Can't Lose is mediocre. Any team that forces them to pass has a chance. Their defense is giving up yards but not points, and that's the only thing that matters Texas fans. Remember when Florida State had good quarterback play? Yeah, me neither. They've agreed

Swimming in the Talent Pool

Just before Signing Day, we talked here about the Recruiting Rankings analysis that SMQ performed and he concluded how accurately Rivals was predicting winning percentages. "Rivals was very, very good at picking the top teams – of the top 25 winningest teams of the last six years, all were either pegged in or very near their respective positions by the recruiting rankings or achieved them by winning against overwhelmingly lower-ranked opposition; of the

Michigan Calls Rodriguez Up From The Minors

Posted by srr50 on December 20th, 2007 under Football

For the second time this year, Michigan made the call down to their AAA farm club in Morgantown, West Virginia to bring up a head coach. Rich Rodriguez Monday became only the 4th Wolverine football coach in the last 40 years. He joins former WVU basketball coach John Beilein on the Morgantown to Ann Arbor shuffle. Contract details have not been released, but it is expected to be in the $3 million a year range with

No Dog In The Fight: How To Choose Sides In A Rivalry Game – Ohio St/Michigan

Posted by Scipio Tex on November 12th, 2007 under Football

Nothing arouses passion like the the rivalry game. The backyard brawl, the battle for bragging rights, the border war tussle. Even a fan with no dog in the fight can feel the tension...and their own confusion. Who to pull for? Investing yourself for three hours in a team that is not your own can be deeply satisfying, but if you choose foolishly, you'll feel as dirty as Paris Hilton's sheets. I've done that
