Taking away Rick Barnes’ candy

Posted by Nickel Rover on February 22nd, 2010 under Baseball

Basketball: Turkish Delight has gone down and will no longer be tempting Barnes to be future king of Narnia over his brother Self and sisters Turgeon and Capel. Granted that Barnes played PG Mason and the physically challenged Jai Lucas for extended minutes but this can't keep up. Rick's dogged dedication (Good job Patrick Bateman) to breaking down J'Covan and co. has become an extremely frustrating thing to see. You have to wonder if Brown

Balbay out for the season

Posted by Vasherized on February 22nd, 2010 under Basketball

Torn ACL, per Inside Texas' Twitter, per Belmont, per Balbay's doctor, per Balbay's MRI, per Balbay's knee. That's two guards lost for the season to knee injuries and the latest was from an otherwise innocuous knee bump from a clumsy big man on dedfischer's payroll. A Tonya Harding sighting on the 40 Acres can't be far away. Rick Barnes' goal of limiting J'Covan Brown's minutes j'ust got harder.

Freshman on the road

Posted by Nickel Rover on February 17th, 2010 under Basketball

Basketball: 1 step forward, 2 steps backward. Dexter Pittman, Dogus Balbay and Avery Bradley each had 4 turnovers while the team had 18 overall that led to 25 Missouri points. Beyond that, the Tigers had a layup-line from open drives and offensive rebounds that led to 58% shooting in the 2nd half and Mizzou pulling away with the win. Check out the box score here. The View from The Drum: Horn v. Corn

Posted by The General on February 14th, 2010 under Basketball

The Horns just gave us a taste of the team we saw against UNC in December, and I like what they are cookin'. Let's jump right in. The Crowd and The Pregame At the 10:00 minute mark before game time, The Drum was empty. But, Texas fans ended up filling the place to a reasonable level for a Saturday afternoon game against Nebraska. It was dead quiet and I was sitting in the geriatric

Just when we thought we were out…

Posted by Nickel Rover on February 13th, 2010 under Basketball

Basketball: ...we're pulled back in.The 91-51 win over Nebraska was just what the doctor ordered. Awiggo from BON had some quick thoughts here and txtwstr7 had more here. There were a few interesting quotes that came out of the game. First from Brown: "My job is to take over this team and get us to the national championship. I have to step up" Brown had 12 points and a 2-1 assist to turnover ration (6-3) and

Post-OU adjustments

Football/Recruiting: srr50 had some thoughts about Texas in the Big 10 which was followed by a lot of discussion on various "super conference" possibilities. I'm all in favor of changes that result in college football structure in which the best teams can face each other on the field. It's bizarre that this hasn't happened because in the most obvious sense, that's the way to make the most money. Junior day has seen 3 commits so

J’Covan is now a starter

Posted by HenryJames on February 13th, 2010 under Basketball

He'll be in the starting lineup against Nebraska. Brown started four games early in the season until Barnes flagged him for excessive turnovers and inconsistent effort on defense. But Brown has become more reliable on defense while reducing his turnovers, committing just 10 in nine Big 12 games. He made two while scoring a season-best 28 points against Kansas — 26 in the second half. Now Barnes said Brown is ready to start, providing justification the coach

Around the Horns

Football/Recruiting: GhostofBigRoy continues his recruiting charts with a look at perhaps the most important boards, the running backs and offensive line. If Texas can add Malcolm Brown or Brandon Williams they can have 2 featured players on offense at the same in Gilbert+new RB. That's a tremendous potential offense that could be brewing in Austin over the next few years so long as the OL can be shored up. Fellow FanTake blog Roll On You Bears

The Great Freshman Debate: Jordan vs. J’Covan

Posted by Patrick Bateman on February 10th, 2010 under Basketball

Quick Editor's note: This was written prior to the Kansas game. - S.R. ____________________________ Halfway through Big 12 conference play, I think most Texas fans would have to describe this year’s squad as –frustrating. Okay, there are a few more strongly worded descriptions that we could use, but it’s not after 11 pm and children could be reading (yea, right.). While, there are a multitude of reasons offered up for our recent funk, I thought we might look

Breakdowns & Remedies

Posted by Hank Dudek on February 9th, 2010 under Basketball

Some quick thoughts to complement the great stuff Trips has already delivered. BREAKDOWN! Rick Barnes implemented a set offense 21 games into the regular season against the number 1 team in the country. He told his guys to set it up and run it. The problem is you are supposed to do this in the preseason so that by game 21 against the number 1 team in the country you don’t have to think
