The National Championship on the Line Right Here

Posted by Huckleberry on June 24th, 2009 under Baseball

This one's for all the marbles. It all comes down to this. Winner takes all. To help tide us over until gametime and get through the workday, here are some videos of the runups and the final games of our athletic department's last three chances to take home a national championship with one more win (I get to ignore the 2004 Fullerton series because we never got into that position):

The Deadliest Warrior on Spike

Posted by Scipio Tex on April 23rd, 2009 under

The Deadliest Warrior is a new series on Spike and it's excellent guilty pleasure guy fare. Morning stars crashing into human replica gel-filled dummy heads, katanas slicing pig carcasses in half, and interesting, often ludicrous - occasionally hilarious - match-ups soberly presided over by bio-engineers, ER doctors, paramedics, and IT geeks with computer simulation models. Needless to say, this show is what Trips Right and I would produce if given an unlimited budget,

Russell Gaskamp Award Nominees

Posted by Scipio Tex on February 14th, 2009 under Football

I coined this award ten years ago in honor of inaugural winner, Russell Gaskamp. Gaskamp was a highly recruited OL prospect from Oklahoma that came to Texas with great acclaim and then gathered dust like a Salt Lake City Planned Parenthood. In 1998 - then a fifth year senior - he was a struck by a meteorite doused in Gamma rays, won the starting center job, played well, and helped Ricky win

The 2008 Team’s Place in Texas History

Posted by Huckleberry on January 12th, 2009 under Football

As disappointing as this season's outcome was when you consider the whys regarding our not appearing in the Big 12 Championship Game, which therefore cost us an appearance in the National Championship Game, Longhorn fans will always look back on this year's squad as an overachieving group. And overachieving groups are always remembered more fondly than equally strong teams that underachieved relative to their perceived talent and preseason expectations. But regardless of preseason expectations, 2008

The Holy Grail Does Exist…

Posted by EyesOfTX on January 10th, 2009 under Football

...and I found it out on Abe Books dot com late last week.  I've spent the last dozen years now building a collection of what I hope now is every book ever written about Texas Longhorn football. As of Thursday, I'm pretty sure the collection is complete. About four years ago, right as I thought I had completed my goal, I became aware of an obscure book - more of a pamphlet, really - that had been

Before There Was Will Muschamp, There Was Blair Cherry

Posted by EyesOfTX on November 18th, 2008 under Football

Many are asking the question right now:  When was the last time The University of Texas hired a head football coach who had no prior head coaching experience at the collegiate level? The answer to that question is:  Ed Price. So why does the name Blair Cherry appear in the title to this post?  Because the circumstance of his elevation to the job was remarkably similar to what the circumstance will be when Will Muschamp ulitimately takes over the

Week 8 Wrap-up

Posted by Huckleberry on October 20th, 2008 under

Ratings Update As always, both the All Teams and the Division I-A only ratings have been updated. And Texas' rating continues to get more and more absurd with the potential to get even more out of hand. In both sets of ratings, Texas has defeated the #2 and #5 teams in consecutive weeks. All that's left is the #3 team this week and the #10/#11 team the following week. While

Horns, Hogs, and Nixon Coming

Posted by BRAGGonUT on September 8th, 2008 under Football

My father-in-law, Gary, is a true orange-blooded Texas Longhorn. He is the only child of two graduates of the University of Texas. He graduated from the pharmacy school the year of our last national championship (pre-Vince), married a Longhorn, and raised two daughters – both Texas graduates and both Texas Angels while on campus. He joined the Longhorn Foundation in its inaugural year. In fact, when boosters were still legally
