BCS Conferences as Road Warriors

Posted by srr50 on December 16th, 2008 under Football

As long as we are stuck with the BCS system we are stuck with a beauty contest where style points matter. And that means people’s opinions of the relative strengths of the BCS conferences also matters. We already have a look at how the six BCS conferences did in non-conference action in 2008. Is there anyway to look at the BCS conferences over the length of the BCS? I decided one factor to concentrate on

36-Hour CramSession: College Football Week 3

Posted by BRAGGonUT on September 14th, 2008 under Football

The beauty of the unexpected bye week is that it gave us all an opportunity to see a lot more football on TV than most game weeks. I learned the following: Josh Nesbitt of Georgia Tech may be the best sophomore QB you haven’t heard about. That’s probably because he plays for Georgia Tech. Think Reggie Ball without the bonehead turnover mentality running Paul Johnson’s version of the triple option. Georgia Tech is

How Paul Johnson came up with his offense

Posted by HenryJames on August 7th, 2008 under Football

It may be possible to divide offensive coaching into two camps. The first one camp says you should devise your scheme and then focus on finding the right players to fit into what you're trying to do. The other says you should devise a scheme to fit around your talent at hand. Each system obviously has its merits. Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson has twice told the story of how he came up with

Defensive Coordinator Changes

Posted by HenryJames on December 21st, 2007 under Football

We'll find out after the Holiday Bowl whether or not Mack Brown makes any changes on the defensive staff. Other teams don't have the luxury of waiting that long and so there has been some changes in the past couple of days. Defensive Coordinator Ron English and every other Michigan assistant was fired by Rich Rodriguez yesterday. English was the secondary coach at Michigan, and Lloyd Carr promoted him to defensive coordinator to keep him

Rivalry Week: “You can throw out the records when these two teams play.”

Posted by BRAGGonUT on November 21st, 2007 under Football

EyesOfTexas's post regarding the relative lack of upsets in the Texas/Texas A&M series got me to thinking about the line, "You can throw out the records when these two teams play." Any truth to that axiom for other in-state rivalries? Clearly, it is not true for T+1. See the comments I made to EOT on his post: Thanks to the power of the internet I have found historical betting lines for

Random thoughts on Ga Tech-Notre Dame

Posted by HenryJames on September 3rd, 2007 under Football

The first game I watched on Saturday was Georgia Tech vs Notre Dame. Why? Two reasons. First, because I wanted to watch Jon Tenuta's defense, and second because I wanted to see Notre Dame fail. I was not disappointed. The only thing that prevented this from being worse than it could have been was Georgia Tech's poor offensive performance in the red zone. Texas fans pay attention. Ga Tech's defense is what a twisting, stunting and

God tells Marc Richt to stop calling stupid plays.

Posted by HenryJames on August 31st, 2007 under Football

Georgia coach Marc Richt is no longer calling his own plays. That sound you heard was Bulldog fans letting out a collective sigh of relief. Like anyone coaching football in the South, he talked to God about his decision. A burning hedge? "I'd been praying about it," Richt said. "I wanted to see if God would help me out a little bit. I'm not trying to be pious, but that's how I handle all my big decisions." And

Games I’ll watch this weekend.

Oklahoma State at Georgia I've hated Marc Richt ever since he channeled his inner George McClellan in coming up with the offensive game plan against OU in the 2001 Orange Bowl. How bad was it? It was so bad that afterward Bobby Bowden thought to himself, "Hell, a retard could have come up with that shit" then promptly hired his son Jeff. And Richt spells 'Mark' with a 'c.' I've learned from watching Georgia the last two
