Thoughts on the Texas Longhorn Defense vs. Texas Tech

Posted by HenryJames on September 20th, 2009 under Football

I rewatched the tape today so I now have a better idea of the defense's performance last night.

It has begun.

At 6:30 this morning Texas had their first practice of the 2009 season. And the Statesman has some picks. Colt McCoy has hit puberty and looks jacked. If he has to take a pounding in order to generate our running game, it looks like he's prepared to do so. Mack Brown looks pissed in every photo. Good. Will Muschamp rips his sleeve while giving the Black Power salute. Sherrod Harris might be flashing

Don’t Mean to Toot My Own Horn Here

But, I would like to hear some of the folks thoughts on this subject right here.  I'm pretty sure Texas played  a lot of cover 2 deep zone under Akina.  I was thinking Robinson would have his guys man up and devour our WRs at the line.  Of course, he had some unbelievable talent to work with in those years.  Someone correct me if you disagree.

My Thoughts on Bill Little’s Travelin’ Meat Circus

Posted by dedfischer on September 23rd, 2008 under Football

With Tech not on the tube, I had the opportunity to DVR the Texas game and do a little scouting of the enemy.  I didn’t really focus too much on schemes and playcalling, but merely wanted to see the talent the 2008 Longhorns were rolling out.  I only picked up at the start of the 2nd quarter and watched until the end of the 3rd, but here’s what I saw regarding your

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

If I were Bill Little, I might start this piece off with waxing prose about how every team is a work in progress.  I might talk about how every team has its ups and downs, its good weeks and bad weeks, weeks when your opponent does some surprising things they had not shown before.

Why I’m An Optimist

Posted by ChrisApplewhite on April 5th, 2008 under Football

Up until the latter half of 2004, I was a pessimist. Our teams never showed direction, our players never developed, and any team with good coaching seems to negate our talent advantages with ease. It peaked with the Washington St. Holiday Bowl, a game that should've ended Greg Davis' career. It remains, to this day, the worst coached football game I've ever seen. It was just a clinic on getting schooled. Then we fired Tim Nunez,

Quotes of the day

Posted by HenryJames on March 7th, 2008 under Football

"I'm not saying it didn't. You did." - Duane Akina when asked why his defense didn't work out last year. When asked if he was happy with his defense, he replied "Yeah, I was."

Defensive Coordinator Changes

Posted by HenryJames on December 21st, 2007 under Football

We'll find out after the Holiday Bowl whether or not Mack Brown makes any changes on the defensive staff. Other teams don't have the luxury of waiting that long and so there has been some changes in the past couple of days. Defensive Coordinator Ron English and every other Michigan assistant was fired by Rich Rodriguez yesterday. English was the secondary coach at Michigan, and Lloyd Carr promoted him to defensive coordinator to keep him

Duane Akina & The DBs

Posted by Scipio Tex on November 26th, 2007 under Football

The conventional wisdom on Duane Akina is that he is a damn fine defensive backs coach who has proven to be a horrid defensive coordinator. I don't think the latter is debatable for most sentient beings. The former may be more debatable than most would think at first blush. I'd contend that a good DB coach performs three major functions: teaches individual skills to players, teaches coverages and concepts as a

Defending the Aggie Option Attack

Posted by TexasFootball on November 20th, 2007 under Football

Coach Akina is now faced with stopping the Aggie option and it should be interesting to see how he defends it. Most DC's completely scrap their foundation schemes and revert to teaching assignment techniques with a revamping of alignments in order to give their group an even opportunity for success against an attack that has almost died in most football
