Bargain Bunting: A Look at the Oscar Race

Posted by scagnetti on February 10th, 2010 under Uncategorized

Let the bunting begin. And, NO, this is not an invitation for HenryJames to devolve this thread into a debate on the merits of Augie Ball sacrifice statistics. The entertainment industry has released its nominees for its most prized… prizes. The 82nd Academy Awards will be given away on March 7th, and with a month to prepare, office pools and wagers

2009 Iowa State Football Preview: State of the Union

Posted by Vasherized on August 25th, 2009 under Football

Perhaps a fitting sign of where things stand in Ames, Iowa with football season just two weeks away is the cover story at cyclonereport.com which features a recent commitment by some dude named Melvin Ejim – to the basketball team. CloneChronicles.com is all over this breaking story as well. In fact, every news outlet in Ames is devoting its full attention so they don't have to talk about the sad state of

Blind Sided

h/t EDSBS Good news! The movie trailer for The Blind Side is on its way to theaters. Bad news! The movie trailer for The Blind Side suggests that it will be focused on the person commanding the premium salary - Sandra Bullock - and that her agent, having not read the book, or any

Dick Simcoe

Posted by HenryJames on July 6th, 2009 under

Dick Simcoe passed away on June 11th. I came to know Dick and his wife Surin through their restaurant Little Thailand, the first Thai restaurant in Central Texas. It is also the best. Eating there is like going to someone’s home and having their mother cook for you while their dad serve you drinks and imparts his wisdom. I don’t hesitate to say that it’s my favorite restaurant in Austin. You should want to go to

How to Lose Fans and Infuriate Me

Posted by Guest Columnist on May 13th, 2009 under

Mas cinema. This from SydneyCarton. - S.R. __________________________________________ Hi! Due to the continued dearth of off-season topical conversation, Sailor Ripley has entreated a few guest lecturers to contribute to The Barking Carnival. Fortunately for him, my unchecked hubris, proclivity towards wild exaggeration and generality, and immediate recognition that HenryJames is an unrepentant fairy should allow me to fit in perfectly well within the swelling ranks of Barking Carnival. Today, probably to the complete and general

The Best Movies You May Have Never Seen

Posted by Guest Columnist on May 12th, 2009 under

As we continue our quest to turn this sports blog into Ain't It Cool News, I give you another Guest Film Crit lecturer - our pal, Scagnetti. - S.R. _______________________________________ There seems to be no middle ground on here, albeit a ground that’s well-tread with expansive, intelligent discourse. Appears we either ham up the art or pick the popcorn outta our teeth. This stops NOW! Sailor asked me to write something for you bloodhounds, and I look forward

An Englishman in College Station

Posted by Guest Columnist on May 11th, 2009 under

Frequent Carnival visitor EnglishAg mentioned to me that he was an English exchange student in College Station. This struck me as an interesting situation so I asked him to write it up (with no hope for any ball kicking). Here it is.

Quick Star Trek Review

Posted by Minnesotahorn on May 8th, 2009 under

Chris Applewhite will likely be along shortly to add his excellent 'Review for Nerds' but I thought I'd post some quick thoughts in the interim.  A buddy and I have a tradition of seeing most of these sci-fi/comic book/adventure films at their opening midnight showing as the people watching often surpasses the quality of the film itself.  To date we've seen dorks of all ages dressed as Yoda, Dr. Manhattan and I think even

Paper Tigers – Part I

Posted by Vasherized on May 1st, 2009 under

As a big fan of non-fiction writing across all genres, from John McPhee's takes on feats of civil engineering to Paul Theroux's travelogues, a good biography on a notable historical figure is hard to beat. A recent article in the New Yorker reviewed new biographies of four titans of 20th century media, starting with treatments on William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer's rival tabloid dailies in New York, then examining how Barney

Movie Talk – Solaris

Posted by TaylorTRoom on April 28th, 2009 under

Remember literature classes where some crazy allegory was pointed out in an otherwise interesting book (i.e. “The Nautilus represents Verne’s expressions of inadequacy as a man.”), and you thought, “Man, they are really making too much out of this.”? I’m about to do that with “Solaris”, the 1972 Russian film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky and based on the novel by Stanislaw Lem. Please bear with me- there is a point to this exercise. Here’s
