New Year’s Day bowl games open thread

Posted by HenryJames on January 1st, 2010 under Football

First up is the Outback Bowl between Auburn and Northwestern. I don't get Outback Steakhouse. I don't get Australian-themed restaurants in general. I mean, what the fuck is walkabout soup? And what the fuck are jackaroo chops? But I guess if you like it that's cool. Northwestern's quarterback looks older than their head coach. And he's named Kafka which at least one sideline finds funny. What's funnier is that he's throwing to a couple of guys

Open Thread: Holiday Bowl – Ndamukong Suh vs. Arizona Wildcats

Posted by Sailor Ripley on December 30th, 2009 under Football

As Texas fans we witnessed a game that probably single-handedly cost Colt McCoy the Heisman while simultaneously elevating Ndamukong Suh into Heisman contention and ultimately allowed him to shag six valkyries on his way to Asgard and kick Odin's ass out of his throne. So, let's see what he can do against offensive juggernaut Arizona. Nate from Better Off Red has written up a few notes about the game. Trips has cried uncle.

Bowl Preview 9: The Emerald Bowl

Posted by Trips Right on December 26th, 2009 under Football

When a collection of unmotivated fast twitch muscles takes on a motivated cellular mass made up of mitochondria, grit, and want-to, who wins? I'd be interested from answers from anyone but Jimmy the Greek and Al Campanis. But that aside, we'll get to see a pretty good case study tonight in San Francisco when Boston College, the hard working Jesuit school, takes on one of college football's most talented and certainly best compensated

Preliminary Look at Bowl Lines

Posted by Trips Right on December 9th, 2009 under Football

I do this every year right after the bowl lines come out. It's as ritualistic as Scipio's use of bukkake tags in his team previews. Well, almost. I consider it the first step in my handicapping process and it serves the purpose of identifying my own gut feeling about line value. Call it the eyeball test for bowl capping. My next step is to go back and look at stats, matchups, X's

Big 12 Football: Rewarding Mediocrity

Posted by HenryJames on November 3rd, 2009 under Football

The Big 12 wants to reward mediocrity. The Big 12 commissioner, Dan Beebe, has come up with a proposal that would allow 6-6 teams to be treated the same as teams with winning records when it comes to bowl games. Hasn’t he already rewarded mediocrity enough by allowing a team from the North to play in the Conference Championship game? Under the current system, teams who lose as many games as they win don’t

Yankee Bowl

Posted by Huckleberry on September 14th, 2009 under Football

Seriously. That's the name of the close to reality bowl game that would open up play after the 2010 season in Yankee Stadium. Tentatively slated to pit the 4th Big East team against the 7th Big 12 selection. H/T to atllonghorn on shaggybevo.com

The Pac 10 and Big 12 are getting ready to dump the Holiday Bowl as its showcase bowl match up and put the Pac 10's runner-up team and the Big 12 #3 team in the Alamo Bowl The San Antonio-based bowl is boosting its payout to $3 million per team - which is $650,000 more than the Holiday Bowl will pay. The change will take effect after the 2010 season, and it is expected to
