UT’s Fred Bednarski: College Football Pioneer

Posted by srr50 on February 11th, 2010 under Football

When Fred Bednarski was five years old, he and his family were taken prisoners in their native Poland. It was 1942, and Bednarski's family would spend three years in a Nazi labor camp outside Salzburg, Austria. After being liberated from the camp, and finding their way to the U.S., the Bednarski's moved to Smithville, TX. It was there that Fred Jr. blended the soccer skills he learned as a youngster in the labor camp into playing

Rick Barnes knows that when you take a bunch of talented, precocious freshman on the road to a hostile environment like Fayetteville you're going to be tested.

GameWatch Week 10

Posted by Scipio Tex on November 6th, 2009 under Football

One of the coolest things about living in California, aside from paying taxes that makes Belgians wince, is the fact that college football is in full swing as I breakfast: usually a fiber-rich muesli bought fair trade from Andean Indiginos. After my exfoliating regimen, making a lease payment on my Range Rover, and my Scientology self-affirmations, I begin my game-watching.

Tired of 11:00 AM Kickoffs For Texas-OU?

Posted by srr50 on October 26th, 2009 under Football

Too bad because ABC loves them. Thanks to the early start -- and no real competition from other games -- the Red River Rivalry was the most watched college football game of the Oct. 17th weekend. Texas' 16-13 win over OU this year brought one million more fans to the TV sets than the 7.7 million who watched the game in 2008. ABC drew a 5.7 rating and 8.7 million viewers for

SEC Suspends Officiating Crew

Posted by srr50 on October 21st, 2009 under Football

The Southeastern Conference has suspended the officiating crew from last weeks Florida Gators - Arkansas Razorbacks contest for three weeks. This is the first time the SEC has publicly suspended an entire crew. "A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday. "I believe our officiating program is the best in the country.

How badly does the $EC want an undefeated team?

Posted by HenryJames on October 20th, 2009 under Football

Apparently bad enough that conference officials are deciding the outcomes of games. During undefeated LSU's game against Georgia on October 3rd, the officials incorrectly flagged Georgia with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after they took the lead with a little over a minute to play. LSU got the ball in good field position and scored with 33 seconds left to win it. Rogers Redding, the Southeastern Conference coordinator of officials, said the call should not have

Florida 23, Arkansas 20

Discuss. The officiating in this one was amazingly one-sided and the "unnecessary roughness" call against the Arkansas d-lineman in the 4th quarter was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. Completely inexcusable. Thoughts?

Barking Carnival’s Rx for Bye Week Blues

Posted by Scipio Tex on September 30th, 2009 under Football

No Paxil involved. As disappointed as we all are that Texas doesn't have a directional school from a dubious conference to pummel this weekend, you don't have to fall prey to the Bye Week Blues.

Cobi Hamilton watch

Posted by HenryJames on September 28th, 2009 under Football

One of the great things about this site is that basically every blog post ever written is saved into the archives and they’re easy to retrieve. Sometimes, I find it interesting to follow a story or a player or a coach over a period of time and look back on what we thought as things unfolded. I usually laugh at our pseudo-genius & certainty. The words 'Cobi Hamilton' and 'budding superstar' were thrown together on
