Practices: Days Thirteen and Fourteen

Posted by HenryJames on August 23rd, 2009 under Football

Slim pickings for Friday's practice, but we do have some pics. Derek Johnson is huge. He looks like a 6'3" Casey Hampton. Saturday's scrimmage was better. At least a little bit. Pics. Applewhite is now wearing a visor as well. This ends now. Antwan Cobb tries to find a way around a prone Ahmard Howard. UT President William Powers might be wearing mom jeans. Christian Scott is a thoroughbred. And Adam Ulatoski is going all Phil Loadholt on Alex Okafor. Some

Practice: Day Twelve

Mack Brown had a press conference today. Some pretty good information about the team that is taking shape. He talked about playing Tray Allen on both sides of the line, and he mentioned some players who played more than one position at Texas. Now it's not that hard to be a defensive tackle and also be our short yardage fullback. It's just not. And then he mentioned something surprising. Henry Melton played two places until

Practice: Day Eleven

Yesterday's Longhorn scrimmage had a couple of special guests. Mack Brown says on his blog that both Spike Dykes and Joe Greene (whose name Brown misspells) stopped by. No jersey for you, Mack. That kid later died of auto-erotic asphyxiation in that same tunnel. No video is up as of yet, and the pictures link is broken. So I'll just make up

Practice: Day Ten

Texas had a single practice on Tuesday. I talked to a source within the program, and he indicated that the practice was either in the morning or the evening. Or possibly in the afternoon. Mack Brown informs us that it's pretty fucking hot in Austin on his blog. Kenny Boyd, the head athletic trainer for football, apparently gives Brown lots of random facts that Brown finds interesting. He said the guys typically take

Practice: Day Nine

Mack talks about the freshmen on his blog. Regarding which of the freshmen will play this year, "it's too early to know and honestly isn't even in discussion with us yet.

" And then Brown talks about something I've never heard of. You’ve probably heard me talk about the MACK 8 committee before. Actually, no. I thought it was a new razor or something. It’s a group of staff members that touch our players’ lives every day and they

Practice: Day Eight

Texas only had a single practice today, and it was partially in the bubble because it's like 180 degrees in Austin right now. We begin as always with Mack Brown's blog. Mack's got a new stat that emphasizes the importance of depth. We talk about building depth – creating and maintaining a mental edge every day. It's one of the reasons we feel like we're never out of a game. We don't find ourselves

Practice: Day Seven

Texas had their first two a day practice yesterday. In the morning they were in shorts, but in the evening they went full pads. Mack Brown says on his blog that they're trying to develop depth at this point, and he reiterates his desire to get the best eleven players on the field. We're mixing groups of players together to see who and what fits best. We want them to compete for spots on the depth

Practice: Day Six

No more open practices. And now the quality of information available starts going downhill until the first game. Mack Brown phoned in another blog entry (I wouldn't know anything about that). With the heat or any other adversity you face, concentration is critical. A good friend of mine, Kathleen Hessert, provided us with bullet points on how to concentrate when you’re working hard to be the best. Like the poem last night, I hope you

Practice: Day Five

The first day in full pads. Finally. Mack Brown goes full cliche on his blog and quotes both Joe Jamail and Zig Ziglar. He's clearly aiming for srr50's demographic and is probably kicking himself for posting this before Les Paul died. Jamail makes people feel, uh, less positive than Ziglar. Pictures. Video of mostly player interviews. Player interviews. Allow me to summarize.

Practice: Day Four

Open practice, holla. Where you can find two fans who have diametrically opposed opinions on the same player. Fan one: 'Christian Scott is the truth.' Fan two: 'Christian Scott is a black Blake Gideon.' Whom to believe?! DJ Grant was injured and carted off the field. Not good, but I'm feeling better than I was last night. Shorter Mack Brown's blog. "The only people I like more than our players' parents are our fans." Pictures. At least half are pictures
