2010 Academic All Big 12 Basketball Team

Posted by Scipio Tex on March 3rd, 2010 under Basketball

Congratulations to the five Longhorns basketball players that made the Academic All Big 12 team. This is the second straight year we've led the conference in academic honors after placing six guys on last year's squad.

Christian Scott and Brandon Collins won't be playing this year because the NCAA says they haven't made enough progress towards their degrees.

Overheard on the Longhorn internets

In the past this has been reserved for something stupid a Texas fan says on a Texas site. But this time we have a guest. Most UT students today couldn’t crack the top 80th percentile at the middle and upper-middle class suburban schools that produce the great majority of Tech students, but they graduate from UT without breaking a sweat. It was said by a Tech grad on a thread right here on BC. Or

Longhorn Update: Basketball, Nigerian Recruiting, Coprophilia, Sooner Cheatin’

If you're ever in doubt about what to do with an extra football scholarship, find a West African. Chris O. leaves Texas as a 4 time Academic All Big 12 selection, sports two undergraduate degrees, and holds the single season reception record for a UT running back (46). You have to love the work ethic and maturity guys like Chris O, Orakpo, and the Achos bring

Go Gatah!

It's true: no one does it quite like Corch Urban Meyers or Percy Harvey. They deserve our gradulations and are superb to any other college football team. Good stuff from Florida Congresswoman Corinne Brown. I think she really finds her stride after a rough start. I personally dig the club re-mix.

UT President Powers: Athletics In Trouble Thanks to 10% Rule

Posted by srr50 on March 5th, 2009 under Football

University of Texas William Powers Jr. painted a bleak picture Wednesday in front of the Texas Legislature when it came to admissions for the Austin campus. Powers testified before the Texas Senate Higher Education Committee that the law that guarantees admission to a student graduating in the top 10% of a Texas High School is quickly making UT a closed campus. Powers told the committee that entering summer classes could be canceled, that students from other

Missouri owes all their success to Texas

Posted by HenryJames on October 16th, 2008 under Football

Not really. But yeah they do. Sort of. Kirk Bohls wrote about Missouri's 'permanence' on the college football map in today's Statesman. This quote caught my eye: "The Big 12's tougher entrance requirements (that) Texas insisted upon really helped Missouri because they leveled the playing field with the other schools, especially Nebraska," said MU grad Steve Richardson, who has authored a new book on the Tigers called, "Then Pinkel said to Smith." Ok, that's the worst book

National Communists Against Academics

When the Swedes gave Henry Kissinger the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, satirist Tom Lehrer said that he could no longer perform. "It was at that moment that satire died," Lehrer said. "There was nothing more to say after that." Where am I going with this? Well the NCAA has appointed OU athletic director Joe Castiglione as the chairman

The History of College Football Recruiting Cheating- Part 3

Posted by TaylorTRoom on June 6th, 2008 under Football

When we left off, college football recruiting was relatively violation-free, because there really weren't any rules to violate. More precisely, conferences set their own rules (I assume independents did as well). Ivy League schools favored no athletic scholarships and no special jobs for players. Big 10 and PCC (precursor of the PAC-10) schools had no scholarships, but would provide jobs, with limits on pay. SEC and SWC schools had athletic scholarships, jobs for players, and
