Texas Basketball vs. Kansas Post Mortem

Posted by Trips Right on March 7th, 2009 under Basketball

The conversation probably went something like this. Phone Rings. Coach Self answers. Self: This is Self. Larry Brown: Hey, coach, this is Coach Brown calling to congratulate you. Nice win. Nailbiter. But congrats on winning the conference. Self: Thanks Coach. It was tough, but we have a resilient bunch of kids. Get down 14 to an explosive team like Texas, with their athletes, and our guys nutted up when they

Some Quick Thoughts on the Baylor win

Posted by Trips Right on March 3rd, 2009 under Basketball

Obviously a big win that all but seals the deal for a tourney bid. But first and foremost let me preface these glowing thoughts with this, it was Baylor. The Bears looked disinterested on offense, and guarded like, well, Baylor. But hell, you take a win when you can get it. I thought Balbay's on the ball defense against Jerrells set the tone for the rest of the D. When Curtis can

My Weekend in Sports

Posted by Scipio Tex on February 2nd, 2009 under Basketball

My sporting weekend began watching myriad Super Bowl hype and analysis shows Friday afternoon on ESPN and the NFL Network. I tried hard to get into it (I put on eyeblack), but when Steve Young, Mike Mayock, Chris Berman, and Tom Jackson intoned solemnly that the game would be decided by playmakers and that the team which puts themselves in a position to win will have the best chance of winning (by playing all

Texas Tech Recap…Paradigm Shift

Posted by Trips Right on January 17th, 2009 under Basketball

Before the advent of the Shot Clock and the 3 point arc, conferences like the Big East were flush with 6-10 big men that would carve out space in the key and dominate 56-52 wrestling matches. Terms like pivot, paint, and key were the focal point of five positions that weren't referenced by numbers. There was no 3 man. There was a shooting forward or small forward. There was no 4.

Preview: Texas at Oklahoma

Posted by Trips Right on January 12th, 2009 under Basketball

The Texas Longhorns take their enigmatic selves on the road tonight to face possibly the toughest opponent on the schedule in one of the most hostile places on the planet if you're a Longhorn. The 8 central tip would be the stiffest of tests for any Longhorn team, but the challenge is even tougher considering the Longhorns still haven't found a true identity offensively nearly halfway through the season. Don't get me wrong, Texas is

Quick Oklahoma Preview

Posted by The General on January 12th, 2009 under Basketball

Five things that need to happen for the Horns to pull off the quasi-upset (quasi because Oklahoma hasn't played anyone so nobody knows how good they are).  1)  Make Blake Griffin play defense.  Whoever he guards, needs the ball on the low block every possesion especially early in the game.  We need to get this kid in a little foul trouble early.  2) Bang Blake Griffin on defense.  Griffin is the best NBA prospect in college, and he

Barnes Would Do Well to Watch Stephen Curry or Listen to Barkers

Posted by Trips Right on January 7th, 2009 under Basketball

And take a few notes on how to attack defenses that sell out to stop a shooter. Look, I know Curry is a much more dynamic scorer than Abrams, but the defensive principles opponents are using to slow down Curry are being used on AJ. Oh, and by the way, AJ's supporting cast is MUUUCCHHH better than Curry's. So what I'm proposing is a sort of counter to how teams set out

Basketball Preview: #5 Texas Longhorns (9-2) vs. Wisconsin Badgers (9-2)

Posted by Trips Right on December 23rd, 2008 under Basketball

With the exception of personnel, I could probably cut and paste the Michigan State Preview and not be a whole hell of a lot off in terms of what to expect from Wisconsin. We're playing the Badgers. They're coached by Bo Ryan. They're going to guard the hell out of you, try to control tempo on offense by running possessions deep into the shot clock, and they're going to play smart,
