If we can stop Tim Duncan…

Posted by Nickel Rover on March 14th, 2010 under Basketball

Basketball: So Scipio did a great job on introducing us to our ACC counterpart and robbing me of an easy morning column. A great read though, it sounds like they are in Texas' wheelhouse since it isn't at Wake. You can see the whole bracket here. Obviously Kentucky is the 2nd opponent and I don't think there's any way Texas beats them. Mason or Bradley would need to stay on Wall the entire game because

Damion…prepare for glory

Posted by Nickel Rover on March 13th, 2010 under Baseball

Basketball: The Baylor game pretty well sapped me of any hope of this bunch beating a legitimately good team. They're gonna go down like Leonidas vs. a hail of 3 pointers. For much of the season Texas was ahead in the Ken Pomeroy efficiency ratings based on their defense. Now we've seen that defense crumble and the current rankings reflect a team that is even more devoid of identity with the 28th ranked offense and 27th

Mack’s practice thoughts

Posted by Nickel Rover on March 10th, 2010 under Basketball

Football: I wasn't paying attention to the defensive line so somehow I failed to notice Mack's current leaning towards Sam Acho as your starting 3-tech in 2010. I had assumed Jones, Sacho, Okafor and Randall as the 4 best linemen but I forgot that Sacho was the one who moved inside last year in passing situations. He's really a sacrificing leader if he's willing to switch to tackle in his senior year when he's poised to

Around the…thoughts by Nickel Rover on 2nd open practice

Football: So, I went to the 2nd open practice Tuesday night and collected a few thoughts on the team to this point.

Around the Rivals

Football: Boomer And Sooner dig into spring football with NateHeupel pausing to chastize Longhorn fans for our disappointment in an 8th seeded basketball team and our hopes for Garrett Gilbert. OU fan knows well that 2nd year quarterbacks never amount to too much... He rates their DE group as the "most proven in the conference" which is another way of phrasing how I would put it, "inevitably the 2nd best behind the Sacho and co." Their

Texas vs. Harlem Globetrotters recap

Posted by Nickel Rover on March 6th, 2010 under Basketball

Basketball: As the first half was unfolding I felt encouraged by the ball movement, variety of offensive sets, and ball movement on the offense. Aside from too many turnovers for a few minutes I thought the team was going to put it together on the road. If only they could keep track of their guys off the ball...then the game just devolved into one of the worst performances of the season. Awiggo has some early reactions

What about the defense?

Posted by Nickel Rover on March 5th, 2010 under Baseball

Football: We've talked a lot about Gilbert and the 2-back offense being built right now and not as much about the defense which has that same old question mark and a lot of impact guys to replace. It's probably a testament to Muschamp that there is so much faith that he'll produce another strong product but I wasn't personally thrilled with how the defense finished. It looked like Texas had one of their all-time great units and

Quarterbacks

Football: Chip Brown had a nice, and free, article up on orangebloods about the man who would be king and his thoughts on taking over in the national championship. Everything I see from Gilbert headed into the new year is more and more convincing that he'll be the featured skill player in the 2010 offense. Certainly the offense is headed towards a more balanced approach but I don't think the running game will be notable

Big 12 Legacy

Football: Vasherized was there to record the developments from the open practice, Geoff Ketchum is opposing the new development on the grounds that it gives up too much of what worked the last 2 years. I'm feeling better from hearing both opinions. Sure the 3-step passing game of Colt's prime was good to Texas, but it was also dependent on super-accurate Colt throwing darts underneath to the Quan and Ship both of whom he had been

Barnes is slower than Colt McCoy

Basketball: Trips did another excellent post-mortem after yet another tough road loss. This is a game Texas has been unable to solve for some time, as I wrote before. Kansas won in Reed Arena by 5 thanks to dominant play by Aldrich late in the game. Texas couldn't get dominant, reliable offense from anyone...except Jordan Hamilton. Last we checked Hamilton was capably serving in a Ginobili-esque, come off the bench and be the creator for
