Fantasy Football: What We Learned

Posted by dedfischer on December 22nd, 2008 under Football

If you recall, I was toying this offseason with a spreadsheet to rank players for my fantasy drafts.  I leisurely followed my pre-rankings with how things turned out at the end of the season to test the validity.  On running backs, I failed miserably and need to study the final rankings to see if I can find any trends.  On the other hand, the wide receivers seemed to hold a little weight.  I didn't

Scouting Allen vs. Euless Trinity

Posted by dedfischer on December 7th, 2008 under Football

Had the opportunity to watch Allen's 34-21 upset of #1 Euless Trinity yesterday.  With Florida/Bama tied at 17, we bolted mid-way through the 3rd quarter with Allen up 27-7.  I've seen Trinity play enough over the last 3 or 4 years to know they are in trouble, if having to line up in the shotgun with 4 wide sets.  Much like Oklahoma State, it's not their game.  I'm going in order of Rivals ranking: #26 Eryon Barnett (Trinity), DB, 6'2",

Overheard on Dallas Sports Talk Radio Today

Something to the effect of, BYU being a legit, good football team that was BCS caliber.  Per TCU alum Corby Davidson of 1310 The Ticket.  Nice plug there Mr. Davidson to make TCU look better than they are.  Seriously, what did he have to lose there.  No matter what the outcome of the game, TCU would look better.  That 35-10 loss to OU doesn't look so close now.

Don’t Mean to Toot My Own Horn Here

But, I would like to hear some of the folks thoughts on this subject right here.  I'm pretty sure Texas played  a lot of cover 2 deep zone under Akina.  I was thinking Robinson would have his guys man up and devour our WRs at the line.  Of course, he had some unbelievable talent to work with in those years.  Someone correct me if you disagree.

The Books Don’t Lie

One of the first things I do after every game is scour through the drive chart and play-by-play on espn.com.  As a stat junkie since my days of youth (my mother was making fun of me with my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago), I've found it one the most fascinating places to get information as I've aged about what happened in a football game.  I think I picked this up during my banking days.

Texas Tech Post-Mortem: K-State – Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad

Posted by dedfischer on October 6th, 2008 under Football

Summary  I wasn’t too far off on what we needed to do to make this easy.  However, at the end of the 1st quarter, I had an uneasy feeling that KSU’s blocked punt for a TD in the 4th quarter might end up being the difference in the game.  Ruffin McNeill and Colby Whitlock made sure from that point on that this late score would become irrelevant.

Texas Tech/K-State Preview

Posted by dedfischer on September 30th, 2008 under Football

I've had the opportunity to watch KSU play exactly once this season against Louisville.  I learned a few things about them, mostly that they dare teams to run on them.  Which is pretty cool and manly, if you've got size in the middle and speed on the edges.  They don't.  They lost 38-29 in that game and gave up 303 yards rushing.  The game was 35-14 in the 4th.  Last week, they won 45-37 over

Hud Passes on to the Next Life….

I'm usually not too emotional when movie stars like Paul Newman pass away, but he was different.  At least to me anyway.  My grandmother is one of the most interesting people I know.  She's a walking encyclopedia of Texas history, and specifically the Panhandle.  Her grandfather originally moved to the area in the 1880's and lived in a dugout in the Palo Duro Canyon, while working on the JA Ranch.  She doesn't forgot a detail of the

Fantasy Strategy: Running Backs

Posted by dedfischer on September 24th, 2008 under Football

Now, we've had a little time for things to shake out and my original rankings are all over the place at this point.  Some have worked well like the WR, where I projected Brandon Marshall and Greg Jennings as the best value picks.  And some not so much, like the RB, where I wasn't so high on Frank Gore and Reggie Bush.  However, I do have some pieces to play with and I want to look
