Pollyanna Perspective pt 1

Posted by CallKevin on February 19th, 2010 under Basketball

Before anyone decides to rip me to shreds for saying "nice things" when folks are in the middle of a great ranting period, allow me to point out that I'm generally pretty critical of the Horns. I'm a huge fan--far too involved, or I wouldn't be posting my thoughts on an internet site--but I tend to focus on flaws rather than positives. Today, however, I've decided that I've read enough whining (I mean

Looking back at years of AP Polls

Is it possible to hate the Miami Hurricanes but like Randy Shannon?

Posted by CallKevin on September 25th, 2009 under Football

I think it might be. Seems to have happened for me. Helped to realize that the two years out of the past 25 that he was NOT directly a part of the Miami team were 1989 & 1990, meaning I can't cast much blame for the most miserable game I've ever attended on his shoulders (Baylor beating the snot out of us at home was close). Truthfully, I think Randy Shannon is a tremendous coach, and

The Greatest Game Ever Played and the NFL Talent in it

Posted by CallKevin on September 12th, 2009 under Football

I googled the first five words of the post title and up popped a link to a movie starring Shia LaBeouf and another link to a book about the 1958 NFL Championship game. Horse-Puckey. Add Texas as a sixth word and google gets it right. The talent that night went far beyond VY vs Reggie. I don't have a great historical perspective how it compares with other championship games, as I don't have

NFL Numbers

Posted by CallKevin on September 10th, 2009 under Football

The General called me lazy. I deeply resemble that remark. No doubt, lists are easier than writing creatively, but we can’t all be Scipio, so I’ll continue to regurgitate data like HAL on acid. As of 9/10/2009: 1) There were 1,696 active roster players in the NFL. 2) 37 of those 1,696 players are Texas Longhorns (in 2003, there were 18). 3) In 2003, there were 31 college teams with more active NFL talent. Today, there are

Colt McCoy and the Record-books, UT & NCAA

Posted by CallKevin on September 9th, 2009 under Football

The UT SID Staff has done a great job of documenting Colt’s career in their gameday notes—the Wyoming notes are here (13 career, 12 single-season, five single-game, six freshman and six miscellaneous marks) - See below. Here’s what jumped out to me. Career: 1) Career wins: Colt is at 33, three ahead of VY (30). My informal research showed that's top 20 all-time, and two more puts him in the top 10; three more is top 5.

Pre-Wyoming Thoughts

Posted by CallKevin on September 8th, 2009 under Football

If you asked a random group of 100 college football fans who reached 200 wins at an earlier age among Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden, Woody Hayes, Joe Paterno, Lou Holtz, and Mack Brown, how many do you think would guess correctly? There’s an obvious reason why, but I’ll just enjoy the answer for now. After the 1997 season, we were in a tie for 4th on wins (59 from 1st), and 6th on win

Pre-season Thoughts

I can’t quite justify spending $40 to watch Texas pay ULM on Saturday. $20, sure, but somehow $40 for a game whose outcome better not be in doubt seems unreasonable. Living here in Indiana forces one to make those kinds of decisions. Is it a no-brainer for the rest of you not able to attend the game live? I’m watching last night’s Craig Ferguson, typing a Barking Carnival Post, and “working.” Home

A Colt McCoy Encomium

Posted by CallKevin on December 1st, 2008 under Football

Let's look at what Colt McCoy has done in his first (almost) three years as the starting quarterback at the University of Texas. We'll skip all the "intangible" talk, and go right to the numbers, beginning with his freshman year. 1) Freshman Passing TD's, season: Colt had 29, setting a national mark; next-best UT freshman (the Major) had 18. After that you drop to Shea Morenz (13), then James Brown (12), then Mark Murdock (10). Vince

D-1A QB’s with 30+ wins

Posted by CallKevin on November 20th, 2008 under Football

When I noticed that Colt was moving into elite company with his 30th win, I became curious about College Football's QB's with the most wins. There's no established source for this that I'm aware of. The NCAA tried a brief experiment with including winningest QB's in their record book a few years back, but didn't get participation from all of the member schools and dropped it. I put together this list with
