  1. I propose a “Jordan Hamilton” drinking game for tonight along the lines of “Hi Bob”. Knight and Musburger will so thoroughly beat this angle to death that you are sure to be hammered by halftime.

  2. These days I get hammered before the game.

  3. That is not The General.

  4. Apologies, El General. Edit made.

  5. Expanding the field to 96 is asinine. Bob Knight’s suggestion of 128 is dumber than dirt. It devalues the regular season even more, you begin down the road of dragging March Madness to NBA playoffs excruciating levels, and you reward mediocrity.

The big tournament resume debates with our current 65 at the beginning of every March is limited to debating a bunch of 17-13 ACC teams and 23-7 mid-majors who were third best in their league.

If you can’t make the field of 65, you’re not worthy.

Fuck off with this soccer trophy bullshit.

  6. I just love listening to Bob Knight call a game.

I think I’d actually watch a women’s basketball game if Knight was the analyst.

  7. I heard somebody on the Radio discussing it the other day and their point is very astute: it’s not like the last 4 or 5 bubble teams are particularily good. Many times, the selection committee is holding it’s nose to fill out the tournament brackets, putting in teams that are neither good, nor enjoyable to watch. Expanding the field is insane.

  8. Exactly Bates.

  9. I wholly expect our offense to look like this tonight, with slightly less movement:

the tournament will never be expanded as long as CBS has it and The Masters. They would have to start the whole season earlier and nobody gives a shit as it is until after bowl season.

  11. Screw augmenting the tourney field. That is just moronic. If you want to change something, get rid of the automatic qualifiers from conferences 99.99999% of hardcore basketball fans haven’t even heard of. What is a better game for CBS? Kentucky vs. Radford in the first round or Kentucky vs. Oklahoma State in the first round?

  12. Radford beating Kentucky in the first round is definitely better for CBS.

  13. Some pretty cool Bobby Knight quotes. I love the guy. The Uwe Blab quote is my favorite.

“If my primary purpose here at Indiana is to go out and win ballgames, I can probably do that as well as anybody can. I would just cheat, get some money from alot of people around Indianapolis who want to run the operation that way, and just go out and get the best basketball players I can. Then we’d beat everybody.”

“In taking of his time to help unfortunate people, he eventually becomes penalized. I thought it was a tremendous irony, with all that garbage that has gone on at Kentucky over the years.” -opinion on the NCAA’s one game suspension of Steve Alford who posed for a charity calendar, and subsequently missed the game where IU lost to Kentucky 63-58.

“I’ve watched the Russians play for two years and we’d beat their ass
anywhere they want to play.” -after his 1984 US Olympic basketball team won gold in an Olympics boycotted by the USSR.

“I can’t tell you, and I don’t even like discussing it, the number of times I’ve gone home and said, ‘God, I wish I hadn’t gotten on that kid like that.’ I wish I didn’t think I had to get on him. Hey, I’m not – I never once said I’m perfect. I have made mistakes, but that really doesn’t separate me from anyone else. Am I susceptible or liable to criticism? Certainly, and sometimes fairly.”-HT March 1994

“Congratulations on the birth of your first child. I’m glad to hear that mother and son are doing well. P.S. Don’t ever let your husband hold this kid over anything but a bed.”-congratulating Uwe Blab’s wife

“Wayman [Tisdale] has been a special joy to me. I get on his ass and he
reacts well to it.”-Newsweek August 1984

“Hell, I don’t even watch the pros. If the NBA was on Channel 5 and a bunch of frogs making love were on Channel 4, I’d watch the frogs–even if they came in fuzzy.”-on coaching in the pros

“I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale
Brown. Then I knew we had a chance.”-commenting on that stormy 1987 game with LSU

“You know, if any of you someday are on the street and you see that Wayne Duke is about to get run over by a car, I would encourage you, I think, to save him. But not if it’s in any way inconvenient for you to do so.” -addressing an alumni group, on Big Ten Commissioner Wayne Duke

  14. the tournament will never be expanded as long as CBS has it and The Masters. They would have to start the whole season earlier and nobody gives a shit as it is until after bowl season.

The NCAA basketball tournament is working its way to ESPN just like every other major event, so the scheduling will not be a problem.

  15. And ESPN will ruin it with Sportscenter In-Game, the ticker, and some other repacking of the same highlights they’re going to show on the fourteen sportscenter later.

  16. “I’ve watched the Russians play for two years and we’d beat their ass
anywhere they want to play.” -after his 1984 US Olympic basketball team won gold in an Olympics boycotted by the USSR.

I went to this Olympics in LA and saw the USA beat Uwe and the Krauts. Like a red headed German rented stepmule.

Sitting in the fourth row and being able to hear most of what Knight said was cool. The highlight was when Jordan tried to go baseline and stepped out of bounds and then Knight yelled: Hey, Michael – Pull your head outta your ass.” or something like that.

    Good times.

  17. Like a red headed German rented stepmule.

    I resemble that remark.

Outstanding “around the horn” type article. Can’t believe it’s almost 6 months until college football. The “U” from ESPN, while fun was nothing more than a 90 minute commercial for the greatness of Miami football. It would have been better if someone, other than a fan, took a critical look at that

    Nickel,

Yea, I think AB may move if he can get assurances he won’t slide past the teens. Going 25 or so is a much different story. I think he should probably come back if he’s in the mid-20’s but not having a clear vision of what the rookie salary scale might look like

  • GoHornsGo90 commented on the blog post Bradley or Hamilton?   1 hour, 27 minutes ago

The great thing about Joseph is he is a hard worker and great defender, just like Avery. This means he won’t be in the dog house like JH and JBC were all season fro their terrible defense and effort. He is also a perfect pick and roll/pick and pop PG who is smart and always

  • GoHornsGo90 commented on the blog post Texas Turns the Page   1 hour, 33 minutes ago

Don’t see Bradley as a kind of guy that goes through that kind of disappointment, sees how unprepared for the NBA he is, and goes to “get his” in the draft. Maybe Hamilton, but not AB.

  • dick commented on the blog post Texas Turns the Page   2 hours, 7 minutes ago

we will be better than an 8 seed if all 3 of those come back. i’ll be adjusting my expectations accordingly which will make season much better

  • Nickel Rover commented on the blog post Texas Turns the Page   2 hours, 20 minutes ago

Hmm, great article, more or less of the same subject I wrote on for today.
I think we are in exact agreement that Bradley should probably go if his draft grade holds steady in the 15-25 range because he’ll probably not get a better contract if he waits but simply demonstrate his ceiling as a player.

…but by conference play, we will HAVE to start Thompson if we want to optimize our potential.

Ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha!

Pains me to hear that, as we all pined for Hamilton to start all season long (except ipowers, that is). What makes you think it will be different with a

Bradley or Hamilton? In an ideal world they are both back next season. Withought knowing how well they are responding to Barnes’ style or what kind of draft grade they are looking for it’s hard to project what they will do.

Bradley has been listed as a mid-first round guy but I have trouble seeing it.

Was pretty disappointed with OSU’s shitburger last night though. I’ve never seen Anderson so bad…almost looked hurt. 5-2 first round isn’t bad though.

We really ought to get 4 team into the Sweet 16 though, with only Missouri having much of an excuse to not advance.

A little late getting this up today, as our first game is already in the second stanza, but we’ve got plenty more to keep us all fat and giggly.

    2) Villanova v. 10) St. Mary’s – I like this to be a highly entertaining, competitive game from beginning to end. St Mary’s will likely jump out

Cameron Clark, #5 3-position player in country (Scout) from Sherman, Committed. T.J Taylor, 3 star two guard from Denison, committed. We seem to have Texoma bottled up. Lots of others “interested.”

This is a rumor at this point and not confirmed, so we’ll see.

    Texoz,

As much as we need to find an identity on offense, we also need to address our defensive schemes. If JCB and JH are two big contributors and we play a 6′6″ guy at 4 and a foul prone freshman in the middle then we need to re-examine our principles on defense. We

I ended up going the other way and taking St Mary’s. Unfortunately, we’ve all become experts at basketball team collapses this year and Villanova’s collapse looks too familiar.

I really like Washington today for the reasons you mentioned. I have them in my Calcutta too so I have a lot riding on them.

Barnes has lost two longtime assistants and gained Paulino and Ogden–two guys who really only know what he’s taught them. Seems like he should look to the outside for some methodology.

Two, got to recruit fewer projects. Fewer spindly white guys that need to gain 30 pounds of muscle. Fewer all-purpose guards who you

There were lots of fireworks and exciting games in this region. Let’s start at the top.

    Kansas vs. Lehigh

Lehigh never had a realistic shot, but I’m sure they gained Kansas’ respect as a sixteen seed. They’re pretty athletic, especially inside. Again, I ask the tournament selection committee; this was the worst team in

Getting off a sinking ship. Bellotti is supposedly very much like Mack in his affinity for the media. I’ve always wondered about the assumption that Mack would be happy as the Texas AD when he could just go get a cushy analyst job. Mack clapping in studio would be great TV, no??

The Wild West was anything but considering all games played according to seed except for Vanderbilt and Murray State. Let’s start with the big dog.

    Syracuse vs. Vermont

The Orange took an early first half lead and never looked back. Using five players with double figure scoring, and a new-look zone missing interior presence Arinze

AAS wrote a dumbed down version of this subject today. Barnes says he’s bringing in another guard. Good, because I feel very confident in our depth in the front court. Alexei, white stiff #1, and white stiff #2 make me ooze with confidence especially behind a true freshman and undersized 4…….

Not too long ago we laughed at the idea that a team would consider taking anyone ahead of Ndamukong Suh in the NFL draft. Now it appears very possible — even likely — that the Rams will take QB Sam Bradford with the #1 pick, which would give the Lions the next shot at Suh

Hamilton needs 1-2 years to seriously work on the deficiencies in his game. He goes now, and in a couple of years he’s “whatever happened to …?”. The risk is while he might get drafted now on potential, if he can’t/won’t develop as a player he won’t even have that to offer in
