  1. I played ball with Mookie and he can’t be stopped. We could be in trouble.

Ripley, you probably did play against Mookie. Was South Garland in your district?

  4. Ripley is surprisingly ghetto.

John Koncak, Spud Webb, and Mookie Blaylock. Sailor is a former Atlanta Hawk ball boy.

  6. Mookie went to Garland. Kato Armstrong went to South Garland. Played in summer runs with them. Koncak too and ironically, often at Highland Park High School gym and while working at the Spud Webb Basketball camp at ESD.

  7. He called a charge on Kato Armstrong in a pickup game.

Barnes is only .500 against OU? Surprised.

  9. Already 3 missed free throws.

    good start…

  11. Justin Mason is an oxygen thief.

They’re killing us on the boards like Clipper did Brooke.

  13. Mason-Griffin looks like Bushwick Bill.

  14. 1 of 5 from the FT line.

They’re just going to shoot 3s. Did you not read Trips scouting report, Rick?

  15. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Silky J by Avery. How Ray Allen.

  16. Barnes might want to put a 3rd defender on TMG.

  17. Solid move not to make TMG a priority. Jeezus, can you imagine him running the point for our team?

  18. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

We’re getting worked on the boards thus far. The difficulties of playing a small lineup….

  19. LoneOptimist said:

At least GJ can rebound…damn without Dex only James rebounds for us!

  20. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

I never understood why we didn’t get in on him. I know he verbaled to LSU while still in his mom’s philopian tube, but once he reopened, we should have been all over him. I don’t know, maybe send VY down Madison way and seal it.

  21. Why does Mason leave Davis when we’re trapping a ball screen? A better question is why is Mason playing anyway?

  22. TMG’s ancestors were wiped out by the Balrog at Moria. He’s playing for them today.

  23. Patrick Bateman said:

  27. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:18 pm

    Great look by JH…

  28. Basketball is hard.

  29. Tiny’s best defense against Pittman might be to throw some mini-donuts on the floor behind the baseline and point them out.

  30. Bartoncreek said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

I missed the first 4 mins with our Doge/Mason firework act. How many times did DJ touch the ball in the first 4-5 minutes?

  31. I am a fan of Rick Barnes but he has mismanaged this team. It is painfully obvious what needs to happen with this team but he refuses. Very frustrating.

  32. Tiny already ate them though

  33. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Anyone remember the last time JCB hit a three?

  34. I said some, not the whole box. Tiny gets hungry, too.

  35. I know it will make Barnes head explode, but we need to run that ball screen for Hamilton and tell him to do work.

  36. Call a fucking timeout Hamilton.

  37. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:25 pm

That’s Damion’s fault. Should have run his man off thru the baseline. Terrible awareness.

JH hits a nice shot in rhythm.

  38. We play a beatiful brand of basketball.

  39. We’re +7 since Jordan came on the court three minutes ago.

  40. magnusbleuveigner said:

  46. The slinky must dribble.

  47. Nice transition pass to mason. He’s money inside 1 foot.

    Give him time

  48. TMG going prison yard on our M2M.

  49. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

+/- is over rated. Take Ray Lewis for instance. He’s way in the negative and he’s a HOFer.

  50. Get yo shit nugga

  51. Our guys don’t really know what to do when they have more than 3 feet of open court inside 15 feet. Dribble? Shoot? Travel? Phone a friend?

  52. Bartoncreek said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Damion playing like shit, but working his ass off.

  53. They’re gonna have to start picking up TMG at the opposite FT line because if he’s open from there, he’ll prolly drain it.

  54. Fuck, Rick. Do you even scout?

  55. Bartoncreek said:

  56. Savage Henry said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

anyone else hate how Dex always smiles so much when he fucks up? FT’s may cost us this game too.

  57. Maybe our shitty zone would confound their hot shooting from the perimeter? The theory being if they’re too wide open.

  58. Mason should keep leaving Davis.

  59. That open 3 is on JH. Jesus Christ we have bad basketball IQ. You don’t collapse on a 5-8 dwarf.

  60. Nice pass, Dex.

  61. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

Bradley makes them pay for going zone. Jesus, Damion. That’s why you won’t get off the bench in the NBA. No handle.

  62. Cade’s fauxhawk is feathered and lethal.

  63. Damion flashing his NBA handles.

  64. Look, this game is simple. Go full denial on TMG the rest of the way and trap all the ballscreens. If he penetrates and finishes over Pittman or James so be it. Don’t leave the shooters. On offense, just keep doing what your doing.

  65. Careful with the retard references-not safe for liberals, conservatives or Longhorns these days….

Balbay shooting layups at the same clip as FTs. He is so fucking bad offensively

  76. Jai Lucas coming in to coax ou to drive the ball.

  77. Seems like every team shoot out of their minds.. Maybe we aren’t as great of a defensive team as everyone originally thought.

And Jordan Hamilton absolutely drives me insane. Sure wish we had Ward and the other kid that got hurt.

    Where is the effort?

  78. Meanwhile, Kentucky beating LSU 42 to 14.

  80. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I predict we’ll never win a game when the opponent shoots 20% better from three than we do from the free throw line. Way out on a limb there.

  81. Barnes has coached the basketball right out of this team. We’re a collection of headcases waiting for someone to bail us out.

  82. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Willie looks pissed. He might have to merk a nikka.

  83. If we had played Kentucky in early January, we win by 10. Now we’d lose by 15.

Calipari is coaching the shit out of his team and Barnes is doubling down on stupid.

  84. SydneyCarton said:

TMG just shook the hell out of AB. He missed but quite impressive.

  86. Here’s your zone, zander

  87. Starting to agree with you Trips. I think Barnes is the new Mack circa 2000-2004. Great at recruiting but a lousy coach.

  88. magnusbleuveigner said:

  89. Bartoncreek said:

  90. Scipio, yep. I hate the dude, but Cal is coaching well.

  91. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:49 pm

So much for the freshman building on the OSU game. JH and JCB combined – 1 for 10.

  92. Trips: As a long-time lurker, I ask: do you still think Barnes is a good coach? Your opinion seems to be generally, “yes.” But then so much of your specific commentary is extremely negative.

  93. Is it Barnes or is it that the kids aren’t listening? Always have had respect for Barnes as a coach.

  94. Savage Henry said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:50 pm

pathetic effort. totally lost out there and don’t look like they care much at this point.

  95. Why isn’t Hamilton playing?

  96. This is simple shit you guys are failing at…there is no stop gap with your team right now, every mistake is amplified and it snowballs. You guys are better than this.

  97. Savage Henry said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

mason for 3 is the best we can fucking do. rick can’t be this stupid i’m putting most of the blame on the players.

  98. No one to bail Barnes out today.

  99. Maybe because Hamilton guards absolutely no one

  100. Mark, you’ll have a hard time finding a worse coaching job than anyone in the top 25. The job he’s done with this team is horrid.

  101. You know gingerballs, how you play is how good you are. We have a six game trendline of pathetic basketball.

  102. bighornfan32 said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

This team is just not fun to watch. Can’t shoot, can’t defend, no heart. Someone give me a reason to keep watching this team.

  103. TShak, has Mason guarded anyone this game?

  104. I’m sorry guys, I didn’t bet heavy against the Horns today like I did against Okie State. If I can find OU +18 for the 2nd half I’ll be all over it.

  105. Bartoncreek said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:57 pm

You set the tone early. We set the tone with Mason and Balbay and defacto Pittman that we are going to have 3 non-factors and suck ass. The other team feeds on that and we feed on it. They realize we suck and we do to. It all starts in that first 4 mins. when you build up the opponents confidence and crush ours. Keep up the good work Rick.

  106. NorthDallasSooner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:57 pm

You’ve got a big run coming. Game ain’t over yet.

  107. Usually enjoy watching a team just playing and having fun….very rare it is us, and today it’s the suck ass Land Thieves.

  108. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Is it six games? I swear we went to shit around Christmas. I know we ascended to number 1 after said holiday, but you could see the trend. We’re terrible. It’s 1 part bad coaching, 1 part bad playing. Everyone has to own it. No excuse for shooting free throws as poorly as we do. Can’t blame Barnes for that. We can’t hit lay-ups. You want Barnes to make them? We need a real point guard. Doge isn’t that. JB isn’t that. AB isn’t that. Guess what, we won’t have one next year either. Kabongo needs to graduate now.

  109. Trips, my issue with Hamilton is he just jogs around on the defensive end not really making any effort. He either doesn’t care or has never been taught how to get through a screen. BTW, I’m starting to believe its the former.

As for Mason he at least appears to really be trying. JMO

  110. Barton, yep. It’s mindless.

  111. Magnus,

Lets absolutely pray for Joseph then..

  112. Texas -7 2nd half, imo.

  113. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 3:02 pm

Mason and Balbay in the backcourt is egregious. Mack’s “he’s bled for the program” doctrine rearing it’s head.

  114. You’ve got a big run coming. Game ain’t over yet.

Maybe we can cut it to 15.

J’CB’s confidence is gone like a fart in the wind.

  115. If Texas actually had basketball fans there would be a force to get him fired. Imagine if Mack
Brown took the 2005 team and went 8-4. That’s what this shit feels like.

  116. I really like Avery a lot but he needs more of what TMG has between the ears.

J’Covan has it but can’t throw it in the lake.

  117. How is Barnes able to consistently make players worse under his watch? How do you go about stripping the skills and abilities of his players? We make hitting an open layup look like some mission impossible task.

  118. NorthDallasSooner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I watched a team three weeks ago (SMU) blow a 24-point lead with 12 minutes to play at home. If those three’s quit going…..

  119. Someone give me a reason to keep watching this team.

Because they’re The University of Texas Longhorns, dammit.

  120. Damion James took 3 shots.. I say if we’re going down lets go down with our best player shooting 20 shots in the second half.

  121. How is Barnes able to consistently make players worse under his watch?

The players were never that good to begin with.

  122. And not fadeaways from the top of the key.

  123. It just hit me. We’re down 18. 18. You know, fuck that, Rick.

    Quit coaching this team.

Kids, go play. Come out when you are tired. Maybe we could do a charity pledge drive or something.

  124. Problem for Damion is that he needs someone to get it to him. Either a lead guard or the coach. So there goes that idea.

  125. Google “anal with no spit” right now and a link to the OU game comes up as the third option. Amazing.

  132. Zone Rick

  133. TMG just shanked the warden of the Turkish prison and walked out in the dude’s clothes.

  134. this team is terribly coached

  135. Need to put Bradley back on TMG. I think his length bothered him more than anyone else we had.

  136. Oh, Billy!

I’m glad Lucas can’t shoot in addition to not defending, handling or passing

  139. • Barnes recruits great talent
    • He is a task master and his players work hard or they do not play
    • Barnes’ offense has no rhythm and ball movement and does not lead to easy open jumpers, Barnes offense is NBA like, all about the drive to the hoop and letting 5 star recruits think they are already in the NBA
    • Interesting to watch Bradley run around the offensive set, it reminded me of AJ, with one play randomly running around while the rest of the team plays Barnes’ patterned Motionless offense
    • Other teams consistently can get un athletic guys open for jumpers by running an offense
    • We are fundamentally a flawed team. We cannot shoot free throws and I swear the basic block out is a foreign concept for the Horns.
    • At the end of the day we play hard, intense and dumb
    • Great coaches come into each game with a game plan, I get the feeling our practices are all about punishing whoever did bad in the last game not about a specific game plan (see Izzo, Knight, Coach K, etc. for folks who get there team to exceed expectations

This is why Texas under Barnes has never perfumed better than their seed.

  140. Bartoncreek said:

How many whores would Charles Barkley have to be caught with for him to be unmarketable? Answer: It just doesn’t matter because he’s himself. Love it or hate it. Gotta respect it.

  146. Still no Hamilton. Sigh..oh well.

UTBX, good post. The reason AB isn’t getting open with all those screens is because first, we really don’t know how to screen, and second, we don’t set our screens up well. I’m not sure the “Random Screen Offense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” calls for it. You just need once a decade type point guards.

  147. Problem is for all of Barnes flaws he has brought Texas basketball a LONG way. He recruits superb talent and for the most part has made it exciting to watch his teams (this year and last year excluded).

And for that I am very grateful.

  148. magnusbleuveigner said:

  152. That is what drives me crazy with Hamilton. What kind of effort was that?

  153. Hamilton is hilarious on defense

  154. Well, hilarious is one way to put it

  155. Pittman should have 20 points this game. There’s no one on the floor that can handle him one on one.

  159. As Trips points out, with TMG on point, we might win it all.

Of course, he probably would have skull fucked TMG so bad , he would have gotten a Tyson Maori eye tat.

We were told Bradley is an “all world defender”, and “tremendous on-ball defensive player”. That was Davis that just wore his ass out on a drive. Davis: a guy that has no business being a D-1 player. Absolutely pathetic

  170. Damion – Stop shooting threes. He so wants to lead but he has the wrong game.

  171. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Bradley’s low IQ? Shirley, you mean Hamilton’s?

  172. The press is starting to pay dividends on both ends. Our guys are playing looser on offense, and OU’s getting tired legs and missing jumpers as a result.

  173. Bradley hasn’t learned how to deak the defense on the fast break. He doesn’t finish like a truly smart player does. He will learn.

  174. Need to press all game every game.

  175. Ummmm.. Bradley is a stud.

  176. Jai Lucas baby. He lulls you to sleep with his elf like game.

  178. AB is dragging us back into this game by the scruff of our neck.

    PB, that’s racist.

  187. Justin Mason. Wow.

  188. I don’t mind Hamilton shooting. Great play Mason!

  189. J’Covan doesn’t value possessions.

  190. Jordan,
Think you might want to get back on defense at least at a brisk walk?

  191. He doesn’t know what he can’t do. Still.

  192. Hamilton has to play defense like that out of spite. My kids do shit like that.

  195. We should be winning this game, if we didn’t have our head up the ass on offense.

  196. and one, be nice to get to the foul line.

  197. We’d just miss.

  198. The Paul Pierce comparison is horrible. Paul Pierce is explosive, Hamilton is a slinky.

  199. We’re 8 for 20 from the FT line. Not sure it’s that nice.

    I am shocked.

  222. I’d rather have bamboo shoots stuffed under my fingernails than deal with this team. Jesus Christ.

  223. I just spent the last half hour rearranging all the lamps in my house. What did I miss?!

  234. Our best offense is JH driving wildly into the lane and someone other than Damion James grabbing the offensive board.

  235. Do you have to play five guys? Maybe we need shorten the rotation to 3-4 guys.

  286. Nice. Buy him a pair of elevator shoes.

  287. Indifference from the fans, JH’s shot selection?

  292. RRR, fans. JH’s shot selection is nothing a little transfer paperwork can’t fix.

  293. He’s good at ripping out John Beilein’s heart.

  294. Ransom what’s your fucking problem with Bradley?

  295. The next fellow who claims that free throws “don’t make that much difference” may cite whatever statistics they would like to that purpose, but then must immediately punch themselves in the junk. Hard. Thrice.

  296. Not only is ou bad, but they were playing without Warren at 100%.

  297. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Talk of JH and transferring is ridiculous. Redamndiculous. Atleast from our perspective. We need points. How else are we going to score? We can’t hit lay ups. We can’t hit threes. We can’t establish post play. His selection sucks, but I don’t see him fucking up some fluid offensive game plan. I guess what I’m saying is I’d rather see him take a shitty shot, than Mason or whoever else.

  298. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Sadly, I think this team actually will get up and play a decent game vs. Kansas.

  299. Hamilton shooting is part of the non fluid offensive game plan. That entire stretch in the second half where he refused even a token pass had the announcers laughing at him. There is no way to establish an offensive flow when Hamilton plays like that, and we will then either live or die by him.

His offense is one of desperation, we have too many young guys that don’t understand how to run a proper offense, Barnes included in that or not.

  300. If Barnes keeps starting Balbay and Mason together, he should be relieved of his duties. Whoever said that the opposing team gets an immediate burst of confidence was exactly right. We’ve basically been trailing at halftime of every game over the past three weeks.

  301. Whatever Barnes is doing with this team it is completely failing. Never seen a more talented group of players just completely lose their confidence and any sense of purpose on offense. None of them can make a free throw. Shooting in general is weak.

I honestly believe this team might be better off if Barnes took a vacation and left them alone to play for the rest of the year.

  302. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Here’s a hint for your Post Mortem. Change out some important names, then recycle. Seriously. Don’t watch the game again. Don’t over think it. The same problems have existed for a while.

I like how we’re all down and pissed. Almost to a ransomstoddard level. But that won’t suffice for our dear friend rs. We can’t use his shtick, so he has to hate on Avery Bradley. ransomstoddard is more fucked up than Guy Pearce in Memento in my very humble opinion.

  303. What was the final FT tally? 10-26 or something?

One day we’re going to learn that our players receive electric shocks in practice after successfully making a free throw. Barnes feels that it builds character.

  304. ransomstoddard said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

My problem with Bradley is the laughable idea that he was the best freshman in the country. He may not be in the top 50. There are 10 or so freshman better than him in the Big 12 alone. He is an average player, not an future NBA Hall of Famer as we were told. Average.

  305. magnusbleuveigner said:

    February 6th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

eggnog, the lack of fluidity is established long before Hamilton hits the floor.

  306. “He may not be in the top 50″

Do it. Name me 50 better freshmen than Avery Bradley. Do it right fucking now.

  307. We had it earlier in the season, we have had it in prior seasons (though not last year). In college it isn’t too hard to get an open shot for a teammate, unless you just aren’t trying to.

    Which is what we do.

  308. The OSU game was an anomaly. Hamilton took some good shots against OSU, and he took some very poor ones. He happened to make a number of the poor ones.

Like it or not Balbay sets the tempo for this team. 15 minutes and zero points for Balbay = ugly loss.

What frightens me is that it appears Barnes has run out of ideas.

  309. What frightens me is that it appears Barnes has run out of ideas.

    That’s probably a good thing.

I don’t think AB is a future star in the NBA either. Doesn’t handle the rock enough, and isn’t going to be a 2. But, but, but, you fuck, he’s not what’s wrong with this team. In fact, he’ll never be what’s wrong with any team. He’s a program guy, that’s too unselfish. He’s not the problem.

Can’t wait for you to bitch about Jackson Jeffcoat next year.

  311. Thankfully, I missed the first half, so I only had to endure 20 minutes of suckitude. If we don’t show up against KU, I’m going to find better ways to spend my time. This is bullshit.

  312. Defensively we are poor, we can’t get stops, we can only force turnovers. That has been true all year long, and with a young team that probably wasn’t going to change too much over the course of the season.

On offense, we should be much better than we are. 4-13 from the line for James and 3-15 from the field from Hamilton (and not anything close to 15 good shots) did us in as much as anything. Bradley played fine, within himself on offense. He had a couple fouls that he shouldn’t have, but was aggressive on the floor and had a ton of deflections. In fact, I can’t really look at any of the games this year and put stuff on Bradley, he has been one of our most reliable guys.

Let’s start with the Big 12: The Burks kid is so much better and more polished than Bradley its not funny. I’d make that trade in a heartbeat. Despite his recent struggles, Henry is better. McGruder is obviously a better shooter. Robinson has way more upside. Those are just a few off the top of my head. Look, Bradley is a good kid I’m sure. He just has such a low basketball IQ that he is an average player.
