Open Thread: Texas Longhorns @ Oklahoma State Cowboys

Posted by Sailor Ripley on February 1st, 2010 under Basketball

Trips with a great preview here.

And here is a picture of a big fan.

If we can stop Bill Self, we’ve got a chance.

  1. You suck at open threads.

  2. You suck at everything else.

  3. Ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha!

  4. I’m excited about the potential for a little home cooking referees for Okie State. The fewer FTs we take, the better??

For the Longhorns, the charity stripe is where they give out free ulcers.

Hey, how ’bout these UConn Huskies?

  6. If we can stop Tyler Hatch’s blowout, we’ve got a chance

We’re gonna miss the start. First half of the UConn-UL foulfest lasted until after 7.

What I would like to see: full court pressure the entire game. My OSU friends all say that if we press, we will win by 30.

What I expect to see: no pressure at all. Same wrongheaded starting lineup. Same free throw problems. Same horrible defense and point guard play.

  9. Digger just said we rank 331 in FT % in Division 1. I didn’t even know there were that many teams. Or maybe that was the joke.

  10. sizzlechest said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 6:11 pm

Not a joke. Diggler is correct. He mixes his coke with old carpet to make it last.

  11. Jay Bilas just said we have not been good on offense but can really guard you.

  12. I hope Rick issues a fatwa on Keiton Page.

  13. Tim Higgins threatens to t-up Edgar Sosa. Hilarious. It’s the same thing I do with my kids except I use a belt.

  14. If you had never watched an Arkansas, Ok State, or Kansas game, what are the odds that you would think Rotnei Clark, Keiton Page, and Tyrell Reed were white. Seriously, that’s fucking weird.

  15. Drew, did you see that? That’s stepping in to take a charge.

  16. If you had never watched an Arkansas, Ok State, or Kansas game, what are the odds that you would think Rotnei Clark, Keiton Page, and Tyrell Reed were white.

    I still don’t believe it.

Didn’t get anything from Big Dex again to start the game…

  19. Savage Henry said:

This should be our starting lineup.

  20. Did Knight say Brown is a very good defensive player? Who knew?

  21. Taking advantage of OSU’s lack of ballhandlers by trapping every ball screen. Dominating the glass as expected.

On offense, our ball movement is the best it’s been in a good while. Although he didn’t score, Pittman has been active block to block which makes it hard to guard. If he does that against bigger players, it’ll bear fruit.

  22. Savage Henry said:

They need to paint more shit on the court.

  23. LoneOptimist said:

Our sucking is clear to me…With Pittman we are a much better team than without him. I don’t understand how little PT he gets.

Pittman with his 2nd and he’s down for the half…..Just a stupid foul.

  27. Wow, I know Pittman has played poorly, but it’d be nice if he could get one whistle to go his way.

  28. Savage Henry said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:23 pm

As a fucking senior Dex cannot commit that foul! Terrible.

  29. Number 33 for OSU is trying to foul and they won’t call it. I honestly think Barnes puts us at a big disadvantage by not working the refs.

Seems like we start every game hot, get a few calls going against us and stall at 8 points?

  30. Jordan Hamilton is lost on defense.

  31. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:28 pm

Mini run by Anderson. I’m glad that Mason left Pilgrim on that dunk….

Gary Johnson needs to get rid of his vagina and box out! He is rebounding like a pussy and playing defense like a dip shit.

  34. We don’t finish at all.

  35. layups and freethrows, our achilles heal, two easiest shots in bball

  36. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:29 pm

JCB is so lazy on defense. Instead of getting in front and stopping the ball he goes for a lazy steal and Anderson gets a layup…

  40. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Apparently I was wrong about Pittman’s fouls.

  41. They have got to get the ball into the block, and let pittman pound this thing 25 times

  42. This looks familiar.

  43. We normally implode much later in the game. What gives?

  44. Pat, I play him with 3 fouls if I think he can help. He’s only going to give you 20 minutes per anyway.

  45. They are looking to drive Texas football-fans-briefly-turned-football-fans back to their families extra early tonight.

  46. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:33 pm

  47. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Good point about Pittman, Trips. But I don’t think Barnes got that memo…

  48. Our zone offense sucks

  49. For some reason we aren’t doing well just shooting field goals from the free throw stripe. Weird.

  50. sizzlechest said:

  52. 2-2 from long after the whistle. Stat of the game.

  53. doesnt hurt that they are shooting 60%

  54. it’s amazing how much other teams slack off of mason because he is no threat at all… but we keep on playing him

  55. Patrick Bateman said:

  56. Savage Henry said:

We have no fucking clue at either end of the court. Mason and Balbay taking jumpers?

  57. Barnes has no idea. Really. I don’t think you could have rotations with less chemistry if you tried.

  58. need jcb to keep hitting those

  59. Patrick Bateman said:

  60. It’s time to scrap all of the bullshit and press and run.

  61. knight is f’n miserable to listen to

  62. they are grabbing our cutters and pushing them out the lane. That’s how you play post defense in the Big 12.

  63. I have got to stop betting on the horns… its just painful , I know there is still a hell of lot of time, but I should have just stayed with the louisville bet

  64. I’ll give you my Barking Carnival 401k if you can tell me what we’re trying to accomplish on offense.

  65. it isn’t nice to make fun of stroke victims.

wait, he’s always been like that?

  66. Our team is f’n miserable to watch.

  67. No offense cohesiveness. Check
    Can’t make free throws. Check
Get screened easily and generally fart around on defense. Check

If the light doesn’t come on soon, they’ll be lucky to win 9 confernce games.

  68. Who the fuck is going to rebound for us next year? James is the only guy on this team that can go up and grab rebound and manage to come down with it.

  69. do you think barnes takes offense 101 from Greg Fucking Davis??

  70. jackson jeffcoat.. will get you a rebound

  71. Bob in Houston said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Well, Trips, they pounded it Pittman twice, he got fouled, and it wasn’t called. That’s made it tough to go inside.

  72. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Maybe OSU will kill each other MMA style and we can take advantage…

James Anderson. 20 points on 7-8 shooting. Um, can we break his kneecaps or something?

  76. Did Anderson get beat up by a Horn t-shirt fan when he was little? Jesus Christ

  77. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:48 pm

JH comes in to help bust the zone. Can anyone help vs. Anderson?

  78. anderson cant miss

  79. That’s how you bump a cutter.

  80. safe to say this will be the 7th game in a row we will be down at half

  81. Would you rather: have a mediocre team that is a known quantity, or a potentially great team that plays far below their expected level?

  82. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:50 pm

It’s getting ticky tack vs. Anderson now. A couple of those fouls were weak.

  83. i think hamilton is trying to show something to ipowers tonight

  84. Some of these fouls are hilarious. James Anderson is getting the Michael Jordan treatment.

  85. Looks like Barnes is seeing the light about playing Chapman instead of Lexi.

  86. chapman looks lost

  87. Jordan Hamilton is the only player on our team that will go get buckets. He doesn’t give a shit what barnes thinks. Good for him.

  88. could Barnes appear to hate his own team any more?

  89. spit and tears said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Seriously. It’s worth an ejection if someone just gives Anderson the John Chaney treatment and takes him out. Maybe we can send in Matt Hill as the goon?

  90. I’m amazed we’re only down by four.

  91. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Down by four is actually pretty good considering…Not having a true wing is really killing us in matching up vs. Anderson. We also have to be one of the worst screening and defending the screen teams in the NCAA right now.

  92. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Hamilton with 9 points in 5 minutes. Williams would have had 12.

  93. yeah he looks very confident right now… they need to let him start the second half instead of mason…

  94. mason should just be in to hack andersons arms off

  95. Rick wants our guys to screen instead of just standing around looking at each other. Creative.

  96. LoneOptimist said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I second Anderson getting some ticky tacks. That fade away?! That foul on JCB on the pass?! B.S.

  97. “Would you rather: have a mediocre team that is a known quantity, or a potentially great team that plays far below their expected level?”

Which one are we supposed to be again?

  98. Trips I hope somebody gives u a coaching job, cause u swear ur analysis is on point. Anybody can score if they take enough shots.

  99. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Remind me again why we don’t let JH try to play his way through it?

Also, Dex goes to the bench after picking up his 1st foul. Then when he comes back in, guess who is on the floor? Mason and Doge. He gets frustrated and picks up his 2nd. Rick Barnes hates Sexy Dexy.

  100. ipowers, says the guy who claims the key to Texas being successful is to recruit Kevin Durant and TJ Ford. You’re John f’n Wooden, bruh

  101. “could Barnes appear to hate his own team any more?”

    Ditto.

Barnes needs to channel that anger at the refs. Big 12 refs are effected more by crowd noise and coaches in their ears than most.

  102. barton, it is maddening.

  103. Unless and until they coach these guys up, they’re faced with a conundrum. Put guys on the floor who can score and we’ve got no defense. Put defenders on the floor and we’ve got no offense. We’re fucked.

  104. Bob in Houston said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:02 pm

They hit their last five shots of the half. Nobody can shoot 33 percent and win at high D-I.

  105. 4-5 from the field = anybody can score if they take enough shots. Brilliant!!!

  106. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:03 pm

John Wall says “I try not listen to him (Calipari) and just go out and play ball.” Our team could learn from John Wall.

  107. Yeah I don’t really see the problem with hamilton shooting , when he is shooting better than the rest of the team combined

  108. Barnes needs to throw that 1000 yard stare at someone other than his own players. I keep forgetting we are supposed to have an advantage when our bigs are in.

  109. By the way, our high low game only works when we threaten the wings. The only way we do that is to play Brown or Hamilton instead of Mase.

  110. I’ve seen pittman get the ball 4 times…. I would rather them turn the ball over trying to go inside, than just throw up a bad shot with our non-shooting guards

  111. It seems the fanbase is breaking down into the mason/balbay camp and the Hamilton/jcb camp.

  112. balbay, bradley, hamilton, james and pittman to start the 2nd half, and just see what happens

  113. sizzlechest said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:09 pm

    Holee shit – JCB starting.

  114. high low on cue, with Brown instead of Mason

  115. that play will be there all night, if they can get into his hands on the block

  116. Pilgrim can have that shot.

  117. wowwwww… and he sits his big As back on the bench where he spends most games

  118. That’s not a foul on Pittman.

  119. good d by balbay

  120. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:12 pm

I wish Bradley would bring it up 15 times a game and shoot that pullup J. It’s indefensible.

  121. That got to be a foul on the rebound attempt by GJ. Horse fucking shit

  122. CrazyJoeDavola66 said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:13 pm

You know, I tend to agree with the people who have been put out with Barnes this year, but I’m starting to think that Pittman’s the one responsible for Pittman diving off a cliff.

  123. wish we could get a few calls

  124. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:14 pm

We actually haven’t looked like shit the first 4 mins. of this half. That’s surprising.

  125. We’re getting ZERO calls.

  126. I know they throw pittman around on the inside and its physical defense… he puts a body on somebody and they call his third foul…

  127. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:16 pm

We are playing Balbay off the ball on O. Interesting. Or just fucking weird. Not sure which.

  128. I find it amazing that the guy playing the best offensively has yet to see the court 5 minutes into the 2nd half… i think he is just trying to cool his shot down

  129. Barton, it’s so he can screen, forcing his man to help.

  130. Why does Barnes not argue calls? Pittman has two players grabbing him and gets called for trying to free himself. GJ gets knocked on his butt trying to get into the lane, and no call. We are getting mauled down low and Barnes sits on his butt.

Sorry for being a broken record…. but he is doing his team a disservice.

  131. balbay got hacked

  132. nice elbow by anderson on balbay

  133. ha ha ha ha! ha ha ha ha!

  134. Say Trips, a coach is only as good as his players

  135. ipowers, in the AAU? Absolutely.

  136. Ipowers that’s why Baylor has been in the tourney the past few years.

  137. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:25 pm

We’ve moved and helped much better on defense this half. Also, defensive rebounded pretty well thus far…

  138. barnes is brilliant. they got the fat little white kid in there and guess who barnes leaves in for him to guard. and of course mason can’t even take advantage of that mismatch. i’ll be shocked if mason is still in there after the TO. shocked I tell you.

  139. This team has two players who are not afraid to shoot the ball and can create their own offense and that is Brown and Hamilton. We must be aware of their defensive match ups.

  140. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Yeah, I kind of like the idea of using him as a screener. It at least shows that Barnes is trying something a little different. Give him the role of defensive stopper and let him save some energy playing off the ball on O. Also nice to see Barnes not yanking JH after two misses and he responds with a dunk and a 3. THANK YOU RICK

  141. haimilton!!!!

  142. Hamilton is terrible.

  143. Bartoncreek said:

  144. Patrick Bateman said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Heat check for JH. En Fuego.

  145. anyone checking durants twitter??

  146. Bobby Knight is the only bigger idiot than Barnes when it comes to our offense.

  147. The game is a lot easier when you ring the bell.

  148. Hamilton has never seen a shot he doesn’t like but when he is hot you keep feeding him.

  149. Hamilton can shoot u in a game and shoot u out of one. As far as Rick Barnes is concerned a coach is only as good as his players.

  150. who is that fat little reincarnation of ford? does he play for the same reason gideon plays, because their coaches see themselves in them? strange. I could be wrong though, im not familiar with osu. maybe he’s solid but im going off of his slow, pasty-ness.

  151. Way to fight over the screen Jordan

  152. jordan!!

  153. Shawn Williams would have been granted 4 points for that shot.

  154. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:33 pm

  159. atta baby.

  160. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:36 pm

JCB is playing his best game in a long, long time, btw. Actually looks like a point. Managing tempo, making good decisions and even making entry passes. I knew Hamilton could play like this, I wasn’t sure Brown could.

  161. how can you talk shit about hamilton tonight ipowers? I mean you talk about trips not admitting when he is wrong, just f’n say that hamilton is playing the best game of his longhorn career tonight and then go back to hating on him

  162. that is f’n bs

  163. Trips I wanna meet u man so bad. This computer shit is killing me. I just want to take a look at ur punk ass.

  164. Fuck ipowers.

  165. That foul call was a product of Ford throwing a tantrum on the Muenelo non call. I know Barnes doesn’t like to work officials, but he leaves points on the court by not chewing them.

  166. A 10 point lead feels good. Hope we are 10 points up at the final buzzer.

  167. Someone needs to tell Bobby after 10 team fouls you shoot 2!!

  168. sizzlechest said:

  170. ipowers, I don’t play for that team bro. But I’m flattered.

  171. I just want to be up by 4 or more… and I’ll be real happy

  176. As nice as this turn around appears to be, I’m hesitant to get optimistic again. I mean which is more likely: Hamilton and Brown play like this for the rest of the year? Or they regress back to the shells of themselves that we’re use to? Tonight’s been encouraging but still…

  177. He didn’t have a another option Trips but to pass it

  178. Patrick Bateman said:

  197. “imagine that scene on Monday”

Have you been to a game in Austin Mush?

  198. pussy shit by that guard

  199. Anyone else notice that Gulley is getting the Balbay treatment from our defense. Hamilton is playing a one man zone on the other end. Gotta credit Barnes.

I’m okay if Pittman gets 2 minutes a game the rest of the year. Look how much faster the offense flows without him. Brown can sit too.

  201. I think he has a little help, Trips. Does the baby sleep through games and post-mortems?

  202. It’s amazing how guys continue to go flying whenever Moses is around them. Since he’s can’t be pushing them, I’m going to assume it’s some sort of crazy physics phenomenon.

  203. no.. I just think its crazy that even when he plays good.. you are still talking shit about him….

Believe me you are absolutely right, he needs to play like this the rest of the year, but you gotta start somewhere, and maybe this game, that will get barnes off of his ass… and let him loosen up a bit

  204. Bartoncreek said:

    February 1st, 2010 at 8:50 pm

I think you were the one crying for his head. We just wanted him to play and see wtf happened. Well, we see.

  205. Not sure if Hamilton made a bad shot or a great pass, but it worked out well. :-)

  206. I have long suspected that ipowers is really scipio pretending to be a douche–texting in this stuff from some business meeting.

  207. Hamilton and Brown must be big time players this year or this team is nothing more than one and done in the tournament.

  208. ransom, Brown has played well

  217. Crap! Glad to know that the fouls are only one way.

  218. jcb still gets a little careless with the ball

  219. Wow, looks what happens when you get good ball rotation and open looks. Well that and a ridiculously hot Hamilton. Pittman has become completely irrelevant.

  220. Very good game tonight, the 2nd half adjustments were exactly what we needed… Hamilton actually carried this team, Thats crazy… but freaking awesome

I was responding to IP’s post. Brown has played awesome, imo.

  223. Holy cow, the sad thing is that its been that way since arkansas… thats the main reason for this funk we’ve been in

  224. maybe this can catapult us into a new part of the season

  225. Battle of the number 23’s goes to the Horns.

  226. Dexter will be a different player with Hamilton in the game. Just watch.

There’s your 5. Brown, Hamilton, Bradley, Johnson and James. Doge as defensive stopper and Pittman for 10-15 mins. I can live with that. This team can only go as far as Hamilton and Brown can take it.

  228. I think its safe to say that was a game we all needed, the team and us

Very odd playing Balbay at the 3/4 (he was on the block down the stretch as much as he was on the wing). Flashes of the future with Hamilton. Still can’t believe how easy we CAN make it look at times and yet still play so pathetically. Coach, please get off your ass and defend Dex. He’s a complete non-factor against a bunch of midgets because he can’t stay on the court.

  230. I agree 100% with you trips… with sexy in there we need to have jordan, if there is no help from the guards then all they have to do is crash down and pittman, with Jordan he can make them pay for crashing down like he did tonight

  231. see that, now, Barton. The turnaround was nice, wasn’t it. Hope Hamilton lights it up the rest of the way.

What a needed win. Gameballs: 1. JH, he hit a couple of shots early and really got rolling. Carried us offensively for about 10 minutes. 2. Balbay. Give Barnes credit. Moving Balbay to guard Anderson and then really hedging on screens led to frustrating him and was the defensive adjustment of the game. 3. Gary Johnson. Quietly had a very productive game off the bench. We went small in the 2nd half and Gary stepped up with 8 points and 9 rebounds with some active defense.

Good news with FT shooting: We were 86%
Bad news with FT shooting: We only had 7 attempts.

Only 5 TOs tonight. Pretty interesting what happens when you don’t give the ball away. We shot 50% from the field as well. Big win.

I agree, Trips. If Hamilton starts playing 30 mins. a game, Dex will start looking much better. Still not holding my breath on JH’s playing time. 27 point game or not. Hopefully this game will show Barnes that he can be a difference maker and he just needs to play. You have to live with the defensive lapses and teach. He can’t learn on the bench and you can’t win without him.

  234. We need Brown and Hamilton to play more minutes. Balbay did exactly what we needed shutdown the other teams best offensive player whether he is a point or some other position. Hopefully Rick will start forcing other teams to make adjustments to our lineups and not the other way around. Jordan playing a true three will only open things up for Dex when he gets back in there as well as James.

  235. hey ipowers, you silly fag, hamilton wants to know how his ass tastes?

  236. Coach said that Jordan is “growing up”. Amen to that. This could be a good thing and it could be a bad thing. The good is that this can propel them to where they need to go but it can be a bad thing because he will think he needs to take every fucking shot next game and revert to his old self. We’ll have to wait and see.

  237. Jordan was 11/16 in 19 minutes of PT. 5 of 8 on 3’s. Loved having Balbay set picks on the low block.

  238. Ipowers- That was a post that actually sounded like it had some hope in there… that’s all we ask. When its bad call it a spade and when its good do the same….

  239. Ipowers = Best. Internet. Villain. Evar.

  240. The good is that this can propel them to where they need to go but it can be a bad thing because he will think he needs to take every fucking shot next game and revert to his old self.

JH takes every shot anyway…what’s your point? He’s the type of player that shoots…a lot. When he’s making them, your team wins easy, like tonight. When he’s not making them, let him shoot a few more to see if he can shake it, and then roll someone else out there.

    Much needed win tonight.

  241. This could be a good thing and it could be a bad thing

I used to finish 6th grade chemistry homework assignments with that sentence. We’ll just have to wait and see if ipowers can advance beyond this level.

Meanwhile, ipowers, Jordan Hamilton would like you to lick his sweaty taint. 27 times.

  242. You took chemistry in the 6th grade?

ipowers, no, this is only a good thing. Only a fucking moron like you could possibly call Hamilton exploding like this and single-handidly breaking us out of our month-long fuck a bad thing.

  243. And yes I meant to type “funk”, but at some point repetition takes over. And also, booze.

  244. Yeah I blew shit up daily.

  245. Is ipowers Tim? I’m lost.

  246. [...] the box score is available for anyone to draw conclusions and the open thread for the game has some further ipowers comedic value as his desperation with Hamilton’s genius [...]

  247. this, ipowers is actually kind of correct here…

“he will think he needs to take every fucking shot next game and revert to his old self. We’ll have to wait and see.”

  248. ballrific, I disagree, the more comfortable Hamilton is, and the more confident he gets in knowing he’s going to get his shots, the better his shot selection will get. Rewatch the game and notice how much better JH’s shot selection was and how much more he deferred once it became apparent that he wasn’t coming out of the ballgame. I typed about it in my post mortem, but to me this was the tell tale sign. If Rick can some how reinforce that JH will get his shots, I think we’ll see a more patient player.

I have to agree with 3_from_the_corner.

I’ve absolutely hated the way we’ve looked against zone defenses. We don’t have anyone that can just kill it from the outside (Hamilton maybe, but he’s on the bench more often than not). Kentucky’s offensive efficiency is about on par with ours, so it could turn into a defensive struggle.

Texas has been the most consistent team in the Big 12. Outside of a terrible game against Oklahoma and a great game against Nebraska, we’ve played about the same, game in and game out. We’re consistently bad away from home, and mediocre against tournament-quality teams (KU, KSU, Baylor). Guess what? There are no home games

Burnett really likes his curveball and throws it a lot. It can be really wicked, and you have to have a good defensive catcher to catch it. So I think Posada calls for more fastballs because he can handle them easier.
