Big Recruiting Day for Texas Longhorns

Big Recruiting Day for Texas Longhorns

So five star prospect defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat and five star linebacker prospect Jordan Hicks will be announcing their decision on where to spend the next four or five years of their life today. The press conferences will take place at 10 am and 11:30 am respectively.

Is it a coincidence that these two moved their press conferences to the same day within an hour and a half of one another? I think not.

Word on the street is that Jordan Hicks should be a Horn while Jackson Jeffcoat chooses Texas unless there is some back room deal going on with Daddy Jeffcoat and the Oklahoma coaching vacancy. I’ve talked to UH people and if there is something going on behind the scenes, Kevin Sumlin doesn’t know about it.

So here’s hoping we land both, which would cap off the best recruiting class Texas has had since scholarship limits.

How about this starting front 7 in two years? Five star defensive end Alex Okafor, 5 star defensive end Reggie Wilson, 5 star defensive tackle Ashton Dorsey/or high 4 star Calvin Howell, 5 star buck position Jackson Jeffcoat, 5 star inside linebacker Jordan Hicks, high 4 star outside linebacker Tevin Jackson, and high 4 star outside linebacker Aaron Benson. Filthy.

  1. My gut says Hicks chooses Texas and Jeffcoat goes elsewhere – probably OU.

That opinion + $2.25 will buy you a venti cup of Starbucks brew ‘o the day.

  2. I think the timing of the announcements is by design, as well, Trips. Texas!

Certainly is nice our office is closed today! Exciting days on the 40 acres.

  3. Jeffcoats has a 100x more chance to become a horn than Hicks.

  4. dick, nope. Hicks has always been Texas. Jeffcoat was the shakier of the two. Allegedly.

I don’t mean this to sound shitty, but have y’all actually been keeping up with this?

Jeffcoat’s a UT lock right now. The high-fives behind the gym, the SI reports…it’s as close to sure as one could get at this point.

Trips–don’t forget Taylor Bible when projecting that front seven. Greg Daniels, Derek Johnson, Tevin Mims, Tariq Allen, and Muschamp’s boy Nkwopara will have their shots, but Bible’s the class of the DT prospects.

I didn’t take it that way – just trying to read the mind of 18-year old men faced with a big decision and with limited feedback.

  16. Texas.

  17. Welcome to 40 acre, JJ

  18. Big get.

  19. Hey, moving forward, is the DE trio of Okafor, Wilson, and Jeffcoat any good? I can’t tell.

  20. Sincere congrats.

  21. Today is a great day… That just made my day of work that less shitty

This is great. It brings a great young man who is a great football player with lots of potential to Texas, and as a notable bonus, it keeps such a guy away from Oklahoma. Terrific.

  23. Predicting the awards Jackson will pick up during his stay on the 40 acres
    3 yr All Big 12
    3 yr All America
    3 yr Nagurski Award
    3 yr Hendricks Award
3 yr Lou Groza Award (because he kicks ass)
    3 yr Heisman Winner
    Redshirt Freshman of the year

  27. Un-freakin’-real! Congrats and thanks to Jackson!

    Hook ‘em!

  28. Word is Nelson has switched to OU.

  29. Is it too early to start drinking? Followed by a few lines of blow and an acai berry enema?

    I think I’m a little too excited.

  30. Ha ha ha ha! Poor Aggies.

Damn, I wish Nelson would have stayed an Ag commit. If the top talent doesn’t go to UT, I want them dispersed randomly. I also think Nelson has more sway with Wallace at OU then he would at B/CS.

  38. What a nice looking, poised young man! Exciting days in Austin.

  39. “He might also follow in the footsteps of former Texas power forward P.J. Tucker. Jeffcoat said he hopes to join the Longhorns basketball team after football season. He said Texas coach Rick Barnes has given him the green light to pursue becoming a two-sport athlete”

    from ESPN.

  75. I’m not sold on Nelson and I won’t be until NSD comes and his letter of intent is in College Station. There’s too much smoke there for Nelson to have absolutely *no* interest in any other school.

  76. And, yes, you guys have a freakish recruiting class.

HJ, you sure that’s not an indian reservation?

  81. BEST. RECRUITING. CLASS. EVAR.

Man, I keep reading that and thinking “Better than the VY bunch? Really?” This is a stellar class, no doubt, but that group was stacked at every position and included the best quarterback ever to play college football. Position-by-position, that class was top 5 at DB, LB, DT, DE, OL, QB and maybe WR. We also had a stud TE in Thomas, who everyone recognized at the time was vastly underrated, and a solid get at RB. It seems like this class is disproportionately weighted to DT, DE, LB and WR.

Am I remembering incorrectly? Alternatively, am I underestimating our current class? Of course, there was a lot of attrition at the top in the ‘02 group, but the comparison is simply based on what was in hand on signing day. Vince’s class was just phenomenal.

  82. TaylorTRoom said:

    January 29th, 2010 at 10:49 am

It is odd to see the top Texas recruit lists, and see so few going to OU. I know the Sooners have made a nice class going national, but the last time they did that (mid-90’s), the OU coaches complained that non-SW kids just didn’t respond right to their form of coaching. Supposedly, that’s why they recommitted to recruiting Texas.

  83. I think that’s the chart of my N. Campus house from my junior year, between Speedway and 30th.

FWIW, we now have 6 of the top 20 players in the country, per ESPN. Of course, UF has 4 ot the top 10.

  85. BH–

I was engaging in a bit of hyperbole, for sure. I do think this is our best DL, LB, and WR class ever. I also like our QB take, but it’s not the best ever. I like our OL takes too, but, again, they’re not our best ever. I’m not at all sure about our RB takes, which is a problem. So overall is it better than that VY class? I don’t know, apples to oranges. But we took a lot of studs in this class, and they are some of the most college-football-ready recruits I have seen. Hicks can play tomorrow. So can Davis.

  86. magnusbleuveigner said:

    January 29th, 2010 at 10:56 am

Brick, what you’re missing is the strength of our class, as you noted, isn’t top 5 but arguably #1 overall. I can make a case that all four of our positions of strength are the best in the land.

We’re definitely defensive-centric. So maybe not the best class ever, but the best defensive class? I’m on board with that.

  87. bighornfan32 said:

    January 29th, 2010 at 10:57 am

It does seem safe to say that this is the best Defensive class ever.

  88. So overall is it better than that VY class? I don’t know, apples to oranges.

That’s kind of a stretch of the apples-to-oranges analogy, but I see your point. I agree that this class is better at WR and LB and possibly better at DL (although ‘02 was maybe stronger on paper at DT, but weaker at DE). But the Roy Williams group was arguably a stronger WR haul, so I’m not sure if this is our (again, on paper) best group of WRs ever.

That said, my gut feeling is that the ‘02 class was a perfect stand-alone class. It was one of the best in the country at every position on the field. This group is unreal at three positions, but there are some fairly big holes at important positions as well. This is the perfect class to complement other years, but it may not be as well-rounded as ‘02. And it doesn’t include Vince.

  89. BOOM.

  90. It does seem safe to say that this is the best Defensive class ever.

Best front 7 class ever, no doubt. The secondary is strong, but not historically so. Overall, it’s amazing and I’ll take it.

  91. magnusbleuveigner said:

    January 29th, 2010 at 11:01 am

The disparity between our defensive and offensive units just got bigger.

  92. “And it doesn’t include Vince.”

Which is the only reason I used apples to oranges. He is a gravitional force of such magnitude that he singlehandedly makes an objective anaylsis of anything else around him impossible. Take him out of that class and what do you think of it? Hard to say, because he made everyone better. You know?

  93. Brick, what you’re missing is the strength of our class, as you noted, isn’t top 5 but arguably #1 overall.

As I recall, the ‘02 class was #1 in the country at QB, OL and DT. And it had no weaknesses. Even at RB and TE, our two weakest positions in that class, we had a national top 100 player. At all the other units, Texas was top 5.

Get Muschamp a cup of joe, that motherfucker is a closer!

  95. Oh, hey — I’m still open to the possibility of Traylon Shead being a bad-ass RB, for what it’s worth. I liked a lot of what I saw from him and he’s fast, big, and has some wiggle.

  96. magnusbleuveigner said:

    January 29th, 2010 at 11:08 am

Muschamp did fare well. I know some of us, myself included, were a little skeptical of his closing ability after failing to land OOS guys like Kennard, Kirpatrick, and Jarvis Jones. Let me check that, I wasn’t really skeptical, I just felt that he had the title of ‘closer’ given to him prematurely.

William Muschamp, Magnus Bleuveigner loves you, and you have my permission to sleep with Maggie Blue if you ever meet her.

“The secondary is strong, but not historically so”

Secondary (especially CB) and OL are about the be the most pressing need a year from now. We filled the gaps in terms of numbers in the secondary, but would love to hear thoughts on each of the incoming guys. Has been almost no buzz on them.

Attrition (and small 2010 OL class) have pretty much guaranteed we’ll have alot of young players in the 2 deep at CB and OL in 2011.

  98. Hue G. Reckshon

  99. On paper the 2002 class was arguably a bit better, but it had horrible attrition.

Five star flameouts included Edorian McCullough, Brian Pickryl, Marco Martin, Marquis Johnson,

Four star flameouts: Robert Timmons, Garnett Smith,

Four star disappointments: Michael Williams, Neale Tweedie, Albert Hardy, Tully Janszen

    Transfer: Chase Pittman

Out of 21 four and five star players that’s 11 misses. I doubt we see that kind of hit rate with this group.

  100. Trips, you are over the top. Those upper management types can just wait while you educate the slackers on this board.

  101. Nowhere close to 2002…….yet……..that class had NFL talent all through it………

  102. The 2002 class also played for three different defensive coordinators.

  103. Trips Right, beat me too it. But the 02 class attrition was terrible. Let’s check back in about 3 years and compare. On overall depth, I put this class right up there with 02 and ahead of 99.

  104. The goal with any class is to have less than 7 guys get kicked off the team or transfer during their tenure. This is a pretty solid bunch character wise but I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackson Jeffcoat turned out to be a prolific bank robber.

  105. Sailor used that A-I-D-A shit on me…

A very disciplined bank robber. Sticks to the minute thirty second rule no matter what, imo.

  107. Muschamp did fare well. I know some of us, myself included, were a little skeptical of his closing ability after failing to land OOS guys like Kennard, Kirpatrick, and Jarvis Jones.

Really tough to evaluate a guy based on 3 OOS prospects. Going zero for ten might be a different matter, but three isn’t a big enough sample size. Plus it’s virtually impossible to get an elite prospect out of Alabama if UA wants him. It just doesn’t happen. And then losing two battles to Pete Carroll really isn’t anything to be ashamed of.

You guys are killing us up here in Nebraska. The last thing I want to see is even sharper tools for Muschamp to use on our anemic offense. We should be a lot better on that side of the ball next year, but Muschamp is one hell of a coach and getting that type of recruiting talent is just scary.

Here’s to the Huskers and a hopeful Cooper (S) and Owa (DE) land on signing day to at least give us a fighting chance.

We’re looking forward to having you boys up in Lincoln next year, hopefully we can finally be on the other end of a close game.

  110. Jordan Hicks press conference:

    Awesome stuff.

  111. Horncasting: Don’t forget we took 3 good OL last year (Walters, Porter, Ashcraft). Did all 3 get some PT this year?
Between Snow, the 3 above, and Poehlmann and Buchanan, we’ll probably have some combination of 3 Srs and 3 RS-So/ true Jrs with 2 RS-So in the 2 deep. That is not so bad. What will be bad is that I don’t think they’ll have very many starts together.

Is our line next year: Hix, Allen, Snow, Huey, Poehlmann/Buchanan?

Is that better than this years?

  112. Wolfeman. Why do you think you will be “a lot better” next year on offense? Your guys will be a year older, but I saw nothing from any of them that would make me think that having 10 or so of them back is a big positive. Are there some young studs in the wings that we don’t know about?

Anyway, thank God Suh and a few others on your defense will be gone.

  113. Wolfemanjack12 said:

    Beowulf:
The consensus (amongst coaches and fans in the know) our defense will be better than this year (even without Suh). Our depth is really starting to look good for next year (save the LB position, which is the one question mark).

Regarding your question on offense is that we are making some nice tweaks to our offense for next year. What you saw in the bowl game was about 30% of our new plays (the announcers said it in the game). A healthy quarterback (Lee was broken in the 2nd game of the year) and expected to be much better line play on offense (we were flat out horrible up front). Just those two reasons alone and we should be much more capable. We also have a couple receivers that will see more/some playing time this year to give us more threats of going deep and opening up the field. We’ll see, but I like what I’m hearing and I really like our schedule.

  114. Wolfeman –

I’m not looking forward to that trip to Lincoln. I, for one, hope NU continues to rise in prominence. It’s better for us and the Big 12. And worse for ou.

  115. Listening to Jeffcoat’s press conference and then Jordan’s press conference and I can’t help but think these two will be the cornerstones of a national championship type defense. Just unbelievably poised, well spoken young guys that you can build a team around. They honestly sound like third year college players.

  116. Wolfemanjack12 said:

Anything worse for OU is always a good thing! Especially with that toolbox Stoops. Beating two Stoops brothers in one year was pretty fun…..although Mike doesn’t seem all that bad.

  117. Loved that video. Watched the moment of truth several times.

One reporter reeked of bitterness: “How hard was it to turn your back a little bit on Ohio State?” What a douche. Loved Hicks’ his reply. Classy kid.

Top Player in Ohio; top player in Oklahoma; top player in Texas…

  119. All brought to you by the top blogger from El Paso!

  120. If Nebraska is better on defense without Suh I will forego pay from this site for 6 months. There is no way they have enough talent to cover the loss of the most dominant DT I’ve seen play in the Big 12. Additionally, they lose both starting safeties. That’s a position in this league that absolutely has to produce turnovers and they will be green there.
Re: the OL UT_BKC, I’ll be surprised and alarmed if Hix takes over at LT this year. He lacks the lateral speed to handle the better edge rushers in this conference. I fear that Von Miller vs. Hix would play out like Suh vs. last year’s interior OL. We’d be trading one great weakness for another.
I’m hoping they put Walters their and let him grow into the position. He won’t be worse than Hix (I don’t think) and has a lot more upside at that spot. He’s likely to end up there eventually anyways.

  121. The Blocking Sled said:

    January 29th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Walters, Allen, Snow, Huey, Hix would suit me. I’m assuming Walters’ hoof will be 100%.

  122. I think Mitchell is going to start at one of the tackles. Walters could play center/guard…..

  123. Espinosa is going to be center in 2012. I don’t see Walters there in 2011.

  124. Snow is probably locked in as the center, I like Blocking Sled’s lineup. It’s mostly a group of maulers though so I hope we don’t stick with the zone-stretch.

  125. magnusbleuveigner said:

    January 29th, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Actually I think Hopkins will play center and Espinosa guard. Hopkins is cerebral (not that Espinosa isn’t) and Espinosa’s number one attribute is aggressiveness. I think guard suits that best. I think Espinosa will also carry more weight. Espinosa = Studdard.

I hope us looking at two OOS lineman isn’t indicative of a slide of in state talent and is just us broadening our scope. I think we take atleast 4 lineman this cycle, maybe 5.

  126. “The consensus (amongst coaches and fans in the know) our defense will be better than this year (even without Suh).”

The same could be said when Casey Hampton finally graduated from Texas. He was dead-weight like Suh, each leading their teams in tackles from the DT position. Addition by subtraction. Same thing happened to the Texas offense in 2006, after we unloaded Vince Young to the NFL.

  127. Yeah, you might be right about Hopkins. Espinosa plays like a mean SOB. I like that.

I thought the reason Walters warranted 5 stars was that he was a near perfect physical specimen with excellent feet, capable of eventually playing left tackle when the backs of his ears dried.

Newy is just talking about next year. I like your line-up as well, but Walters is so versatile, who knows where he ends up for next year. Long term, it would be a disservice to the kid to put him anywhere other than LT. Hello Joe Thomas.

  130. I will sacrifice my first born if NU has the same success against us next year as they did this year. You do not lose the most dominant DT of the last decade and get better, especially when the rest of you D is good, not great.

  131. ““The consensus (amongst coaches and fans in the know) our defense will be better than this year (even without Suh).””

Understand Bo comes from the Bob Stoops “This will be the best team I have ever coached” hype machine coaching tree. Of course he is going to say things like this even if it comical to say without going through Spring drills and August camp.

As far as the OL goes, I was in fact talking about next year. With a medical shirt for Walters at some point he still has 4 years left to play at Texas. He could play center/guard next year if that meant putting the best 5 players on the line.

Hix is much better than people give him credit for even if he did Bill Bucker the NC game by letting his man go free to injure McCoy. Not having Hall and Tanner on the line will pay dividends next year.

  132. magnus,

Re: Recruiting OOS linemen this year is notso much indicative of a drop in Texas talent. Westerman and Hagerty are just that good, and Westerman has a real hard on for Texas.

For what it’s worth, I know a trainer that works for the football team. He says that Gilbert’s nickname is “The Savior” and have been that way since he showed up to practice. If he can just somewhat gell with those young wideouts, I don’t think we miss much of a beat next year.

Our defense will be just as good, so I think we can make a strong run at the Big 12 Title despite losing an All-America QB.

It’s a good day to be a Horn!

Magnus – Love the Joe Thomas comparison.
Newy – excellent point in regards to Hall and Tanner. That’s the very definition of addition through subtraction. Back to your prior post – does Mitchell have the feet for LT? When you have an OC that’ll go five wide empty set with an 18 year old QB in a championship game, you’d better have an athletic LT. I haven’t watched Mitchell closely enough to form an opinion yet, but I’d like to hear from those of you who have..

In support of that, I heard from very reliable folks very close to the program that both Mack and Greg Davis have stated to the coaching staff that they feel that they have “waited their entire careers for a quarterback like Garrett Gilbert.” They hold a very high opinion of him. Say what you will for their coaching acumen, their talent evaluation to date has been very, very good.

  136. That would explain why they couldn’t figure out what the fuck they had in Vince Young.

  137. It took them awhile with VY, no doubt. But they did, eventually, figure out they had the greatest college football player ever. I took their comments, as described to me, to refer to a more traditional passing quarterback.

  145. More recruiting goodness from the WWL.

    Assorted goodies:

Of the Longhorns’ 24 commitments, 15 are ranked in the ESPNU 150, and six are among the top 20, crushing the rest of the Big 12. In the South, Oklahoma is next with six among its 29 commitments. Nebraska, with one, is the lone North program to nab a top-150 recruit.

Muschamp attacks recruiting the way he teaches defense — with fire and passion. In his second season, Muschamp molded the Longhorns into the nation’s No. 3-ranked defense. It was the backbone of a team that won the Big 12 championship before falling to Alabama in the BCS National Championship three weeks ago.

“It’s funny, because every day when I come up to school, I’ll come up through the top of where the coaches park, and I’ll look to see if his truck is there,” Muckelroy said. “I’ll usually see every coach’s car there, and then at nighttime you’ll see a few trucks in there. When all the coaches go home, you’ll see his truck in there and some of the defensive GAs [graduate assistants].

“That’s the thing I always look for, to see if coach Muschamp is still up there. Because if he’s still working, then I feel like I should still be working, watching film or doing something. He’s that type of guy.”

Asked if there’s ever been a time he hasn’t seen Muschamp’s truck in the parking garage, Muckelroy smiled. “A few times. But that’s usually when he’s out recruiting.”

  146. ransom–that was Ulatoski. and he blew it.

OL, RB, and DB are going to have to be big targets next year. 5OL, 5 DBs, and 2 RBs (Sims and Williams please).

  147. What was the deal with Luke Joeckel? Why no interest from Texas? He has a lot of big-time offers, and performed well at the UA game/practices. He would’ve looked nice in this class.

  148. “OL, RB, and DB are going to have to be big targets next year. 5OL, 5 DBs, and 2 RBs (Sims and Williams please).”

I imagine the staff will take 3 RB’s and from the sound of it, we actually know who we want and will get commitments from all 3 by May (Brown, Bergeron, Williams). Major is the lead guy on Brown and the other two are essentially sold already.

5 linemen without a doubt. 5 will give us 14 on the 2011 roster with no additional attrition. Any more attrition and we have to take 6. Have we ever done that?

At least one corner from this class will be in the 2-deep their freshman year. We need numbers but we also need to target the best of the best and get a few enrolled in January.

  149. “Newy – excellent point in regards to Hall and Tanner. That’s the very definition of addition through subtraction. Back to your prior post – does Mitchell have the feet for LT? I think Hix moves to LT and Mitchell plays RT, at least to start the Spring drills. It will be interesting to see what they do with Walters. If they feel comfortable with Allen-Snow-Huey then he might get a chance to compete for one of the tackle spots.

bigduke, re: Joeckel. I reckon it’s because we didn’t want to offer his goiter of a brother. I know they said they weren’t afraid to seperate, but c’mon, that doesn’t happen often. He really shot up the charts. Rivals bumped him ahead of Matthews if I’m not mistaken. That might have been a miss.

I wish we would have offered Eddrick Loften. He’s the one we didn’t go after that I wanted.

Nebraska’s D being better without Suh is not anymore of a stretch than UT’s being better losing Kindle, Houston, Muck and Earl. I put the chance of both at less than 10%.

” heard from very reliable folks very close to the program that both Mack and Greg Davis have stated to the coaching staff that they feel that they have “waited their entire careers for a quarterback like Garrett Gilbert.”

God I hope that isn’t the lastest reasoning for ignoring a running game.

  154. That’s a good point. I didn’t know about the twin. It’s definitely tough to overcome a team that offers both brothers. There was a similar situation this year with Alec Ogletree, an elite safety with a less talented twin from GA. Georgia initially only offered the good brother but I think was forced to offer the twin when FSU offered him and threatened to take both brothers. At Texas we recruit well enough that we should be above package deals, but it doesn’t hurt to just offer the good brother. If he wants to play with his brother then you don’t get him. No harm in offering though.

I wouldn’t have minded offering Loften, either.

  155. …I heard from very reliable folks very close to the program that both Mack and Greg Davis have stated to the coaching staff that they feel that they have “waited their entire careers for a quarterback like Garrett Gilbert.

They deserve credit for recruiting him. Now, let Muschamp hire someone to design an offense that can utilize his and everyone else’s talent. If he’s that good, we owe him an OC who can scheme a running game to protect him.

That would explain why they couldn’t figure out what the fuck they had in Vince Young.

    Amen, brother.

  156. Expert guru all-around-good-guy buddy Gerry Hamilton hit the story here:

    ESPN

  157. What’s the word on the DB recruits in this class? They all committed early and without much fanfare, so not much chatter. It’s a huge need with both Browns gone after next year and AJ Williams probable to go pro. Really we could have used two late 5 stars at corner more than DE and LB.

  158. anonymous – look me in the mouth again and I’ll kick your squarely in the balls.

  159. I don’t even know what a goiter is but I can tell you that Matt Joeckle is a pretty damn good athlete. And those two always wanted to go to school together.

  160. “I don’t even know what a goiter is ”

That’s that shit on Frank Beamer’s face.

Ag, spin the lesser Joeckel all you want, but had Case signed with you guys (we knew it wasn’t going to happen, but he’s the guy you offered along with Showers) you wouldn’t have offered him at all. With your numbers you needed two and you ended up getting him. I believe he’s a three star. Fair enough, but that won’t suffice for us in our position.

  163. magnusbleuveigner said:

    January 30th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

I don’t think that’s a goiter on Beamer’s face. I think that’s scarring from skin grafts stemming from an accident of some sort. Fireworks, or some shit.
