Texas Longhorns Football Recruiting Wish List

Posted by Trips Right on January 25th, 2010 under Football, Recruiting

It’s about that time of the year for the Texas Longhorns, after the bowl game and before Spring practice, with another top 5 recruiting class on lockdown. A class that may vault to number 1 if five star war-daddies Jordan Hicks and Jackson Jeffcoat commit to the good guys.

With Junior days right around the corner it’s time to start compiling a wish list that’s going to change about two dozen times over the course of the next 10 or so months. You can thank Mack Brown for turning the recruiting calendar on its ear. Remember, Jay Guy was the number 1 DT must have on virtually everyone’s list last year. Currently he’s in the 70’s on most state lists. So give me some latitude here because I get the fact that this is just the beginning.

On Offense

Running Back I’ll start with the deepest position in Texas. Luckily for Texas we’ve only taken 1 RB each of the last two years including 2010. But there is a chance that Whaley may move to TE and/or Traylon Shead could always move to the other side of the ball. If you’re going to load up, do it this year. Give me…

Malcolm Brown: the most complete back in the class.

Brandon Williams: the back with the most buzz runs violently, a lot like Adrian Peter$on.

Joe Bergeron: Will Muschamp’s pro style fullback. Beastly cat.

Wide Receiver We’ll take two and call it a day after the 2010 haul Give me…

Jaxon Shipley: the bigger version of his older brother. More Ed Mcaffery than Lance Allworth.

Trey Meteyor: Sounds fast. Cosmically.

Tight End We took DariusTerrel to continue the trend of big wide recievers that grow into flex guys. I’m guessing we get a classic tight end to help with the power run game. Give me…

MJ McFarland: Big physical TE end out of El Paso, Texas. Dude’s like him wake up in the morning and piss excellence.

OLine We took two interior players with Espinosa and Hopkins in 2010, so we need at least 3 tackles this class. Give me…

Sedrick Flowers: Big, lean 280 pound athlete that will be a cornerstone at left tackle. Top 30 national type player.

Christian Westerman: Kid out of Arizona should be one of the top ranked offensive tackles nationally. He really loves the Horns. Bookends anyone?

Garrett Greenlea: Huge 6-7 tackle prospect out of Klein Collins is really high on Texas.

Plus, one out of state or late blooming in state interior Lineman.

QB David Ash? He loves us, but is he the right player for our system? Why not take a flyer on a national stud and then fall back on him or another in state cat that emerges?

On Defense

Defensive tackle We can afford to take the best of the best after taking 3 true DT’s in 2010 plus Jackson Jeffcoat who can spin down vs. the pass happy Big 12 attacks. As HenryJames says, give me studs…

Desmond Jackson: Quick as a hiccup for a DT out of Spring Westfield. Comical watching him get by offensive lineman before they get out of their stance at the Army all star game. Perfect one gap prospect that Muschamp covets.

Marquise Anderson: Another speedy one gap tackle that compliments the 2010 DT haul of space eaters like Bible, Dorsey, and Cotton. He loves Texas.

Defensive End Take the two best available. Give me…

Cedric Reed: 6-3 240 lb speed rusher out of Cleveland.

Nathan Hughes: 6-5 245 lb strongside defensive end out of Klein Oak. North Houston, holla. Hughes commits on the spot at junior day and word on the streets of Spring is that Muschamp loves him some Hughes.

Linebackers: We need two if Jordan Hicks moves to Austin, so I’ll go with the two best available.

Steve Edmond: Dude’s got Derrick Johnson type film. He can easily grow into the buck position or give you uber athleticism inside.

Anthony Wallace: When you get in a bar fight don’t worry about the guy that takes off his jacket, worry about the guy that takes off his watch. Wallace is so bad he carries a pocket watch. Just a beast at inside linebacker.

One out of state stud.

Defensive Backs/Athletes I say we need at least 4 and may be 5. Give me…

Sheroid Evans: Super fast 6-1 DB that’s not afraid of contact.

LeRoy Scott: 5-10 190 pound ball of hatred. He looks a lot like Earl Thomas. Hybrid safety prospect.

Desmond Roland: 6-3 200 lb dudes that can run and aren’t afraid to light you up make awesome safety prospects.

Kolby Griffin: 6-0 180 cornerback out of St. Pius is a Mack Brown type kid.

Quandre Diggs: Quintin Jammer’s little brother. Quandre is an athlete out of Angleton that could be Darren Sproles, Quan Cosby, or Earl Thomas. You don’t pass on explosive legacies like him.

One out of state bluest of the blue type cover corner.

Overall we’ll take between 22-25, and right now I’m hoping it involves these cats, but I can be persuaded.

Who do you want?

  1. Kolby Griffin: 6-0 180 cornerback out of St. Pius is a Mack Brown type kid.

And, by that, you mean that he’s a defensive back named “Griffin?”

  2. Flowers is listed at 6′3″, 280. I’m not the first to suggest that he might be a guard at the next level. Regardless, he would be a good get.

At DE, it’s obligatory to go after Rasco, who might be the top player in LA and lists Texas as one of his two favorites.

Sure would be nice to recruit an actual tight end one of these years. Would be a great time to go out of state. I dunno about McFarland.

Agree with most of the rest. 3 straight top 5 recruiting classes sounds about right.

  3. DE. You left out the best in the country, the kid from La. that will be one of our first offers. I’m blanking on the name right now.

He probably favors the Horns right now.

  4. Looks like Russel Shepard’s younger brother has been invited to a junior day. I think he’s a defensive back.

Weird, I just got done watching film on Brandon Williams. Dude is fast. Real fast. Runs hard but I wouldn’t say powerful. Seems to have excellent vision and nice hands. Coolest highlight was him lighting up a db after a pick. Yes please.

I’ll definitely take Wallace. USC’s last regime was all over his jock. I think with the possibility of Edmond spinning down and Wallace more of an ILB, we need to get one more true outside backer. Trevon Randle will do. You know we’re going to offer Chet Moss right? Not too excited about that.

We should be going with three wr’s in my opinion. We didn’t account for the loss of Buckner and Collins. I realize that the current wr class is huge, but year before all we took was Timmons. In a pass heavy offense we have to have 6 deep in quality.

I’m not sold on Ash or JW Walsh, but I’m not sure we’re going to be able to lure a national top 100 guy with the Gilbert, Wood, McCoy triumvirate in place. I say take Brewer.

Jemauria Rasco would be lovely but it’s going to be tough to pull him from Tiger country. I’ll be hoping that Miles does just enough to keep his job (don’t want them coming after WM) but not enough to persuade Mr. Rasco. Phillip Geiggar (coach on Rasco’s team) finally gets his do over.

Trips, you’re a 45 N type of cat? Depending on my status with my girlfriend, I’m at 1960 and Kirkendoll.

I’m thinking Westermann to USC would have been a lock before Petey left. Now I fancy our chances.

Per Rasco: I love that Vandy, Duke, and Stanford have offered. If scholastics plays any part, you gotta like us over LSU in a landslide.

  9. Jammer’s lil bro? No shit.

  10. Thinking Chet Moss at LB is probably a lock.

I would also like us to take Brewer.

I like the RB selections, but you could trade out any of them for Sims and I woudn’t mind.

Corners. Corners corners corners. And some corners. We’re losing our top three after ‘10 and there is no one behind them.

Word on Diggs is he’s a little butt hurt because we haven’t been in too much contact with him of late. Meanwhile he’s up to 17 offers. Hopefully everything gets smoothed over. He’s super tight with Applewhite, so we’d have to purposely fuck this up.

Yes Nordberg, we need corners bad and Scott seems to be the only elite. We’ll probably keep close tabs on Stephen Williams (Aaron’s cousin) and maybe offer. We’re going to have to get some quality minutes out of Eryon Barnett this year, and probably Adrian Phillips and Carington Byndom.

I like Sims as well, but I really like what I saw out of Brandon Williams. He’s what Aaron Green is supposed to be.

  12. Bartoncreek said:

    January 25th, 2010 at 6:11 pm

I would gladly take the Sims boys. Not sure about their size but they are ballers. Quan wasn’t big either. I would pass on Green at RB, did not impress me even slightly. The TE from the west texas town sounds good, but I haven’t seen him. Brewer is smallish but he is damn good. Sees the field and as accurate as I have seen in h.s. Graham Harrel type, possibly with more upside.

Also, I know it’s early, but Robert Jones’ son was a sophomore at Austin High this past year. Word is that he may be heading to Lake Travis to team up with Brewer. He is as good a WR prospect as I have seen. 6-3 now, runs good routes and hands of glue. He will be one of the top prospects in the country in a couple of years probably. Anyway, worth watching next year.

Against offering QB’s like Riley Dodge who may have intangibles but not Texas material.

  14. Mysterious Package said:

What about the TE from Washington? He visited last year no?

  15. I like Roland as a WR.

  16. magnusbleuveigner said:

    January 25th, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Nothing on Austin Seferian Jackson in a looooong time.

I would be more inclined to compare Brewer to Drew Brees, not Riley Dodge. Dodge wasn’t even recruited to play qb at Texas. Riley Dodge = Kendall Briles. In many, many ways.

  17. Bartoncreek said:

    January 25th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Yes, Brewer is nothing like Dodge. Brees coming out of h.s., or McCoy coming out of h.s. is a much better comparison. Not that he’ll be that good, but they were legitimate qb prospects, as is Brewer.

  18. We can do better than Michael Dodge. I mean Riley Brewer. Sorry, Michael Brewer.

I have convinced myself that we’re going to take Brandon Williams, Malcolm Brown, and Joe Bergeron. If that happens, I will be 100% satisfied. Brandon Williams will be at the first junior day and will most likely be offered. Baylor is the only offer being reported for him so I have to think us getting on him early will play to our favor. Somebody mentioned grades may be an issue with him, but I have no idea if there’s any merit to that rumor. Someone here said to bet big on Brown committing so unless he was talking about Ladarius Brown, we look good on at least one of the big three. Conventional wisdom has Bergeron being a lock.

I’m not happy about Chet Moss being a likely offer because I think there’s plenty more talent out there for the picking. Chet would jump on an offer to carry around Muschamp’s tea two days before signing day. Why rush?

I hear we’re in on a couple OOS guys. A LB from the southeast, an OL from New Mexico, and Westerman. There’s an elite RB from Jarvis Jones’ old high school who is claiming we’re looking at him. Given the abundance of RB talent in state, I really don’t see anyone on our coaching staff putting any real effort into that one. It looks like we may be slow playing some of the in state OL talent so we can take a stronger look at the OOS linemen. Maybe that’s wishful thinking. It’d be great if it wasn’t.

I’ve seen some film on Drango and I’m not as high on him as others are. I also don’t think he’s as tall as advertised (listed at 6′6”).

What do you guys think of Green? I haven’t seen his Junior year film but I was pretty impressed with his Sophomore film.

I like our chances with Wallace because I get the feeling Christian Scott is a guy the Skyline team looks up to. Mike Davis’ 180 shift of public attitude towards the horns once we started showing him attention is pretty good evidence the guys at Skyline are higher on the horns than in years past.

The 2011 DB class is going to be great. Kolby Griffin and Leroy Scott are 100% locks already. I’ve heard positive things about our chances with another of the elite safeties but I can’t remember which one.

Have we really cooled on Diggs? It’s not going to be that difficult to get him turned around if that’s true. He’s all about the Horns. I expect him to take some visits, though.

  19. Brewer >>> Dodge, with a year to go.

  20. “Somebody mentioned grades may be an issue with him, but I have no idea if there’s any merit to that rumor.”

We’ll know if that’s true within the month

  21. What about JD McCoy? Kid’s a can’t miss. Vince Howard? Dude’s got attitude problems but he’s a walking highlight. I know they’re only sophomores but we gotta get on their jock early if we’re planting junior day seeds, you know what I am sayin?

  22. “What about JD McCoy? Kid’s a can’t miss. Vince Howard? Dude’s got attitude problems but he’s a walking highlight. I know they’re only sophomores but we gotta get on their jock early if we’re planting junior day seeds, you know what I am sayin?”

Is that Ahmard Howard’s cousin/brother/godson/step child? I’ve heard there are two other good players on the Angleton team besides Diggs but they are both grade/attitude risks. I didn’t you actually had to like, learn shit, in Angleton.

    Stay classy, Austin….

  24. ” I didn’t you actually had to like, learn shit, in Angleton.”

Verbs and all words are my friends…. But God help the man who fucks with my teleprompter!!!!!!!!

  28. I’m not going to pretend to know enough to suggest specific names, but I’d like to see 4 or 5 OL and 3-5 DBs with at least 2 true stud corners. I’d like to see 2 RBs and a QB and 2 or 3 WRs. Round it out with 2 LBs and 3-4 DL. And a kicker. That’s 22 max, so if there’s room I’d add a true TE and another LB. Surprised nobody’s mentioned Eryon Barnett’s brother for the TE, as that’s the guy I’ve seen mentioned the most on other sites.

  29. Chris Barnett and his dad have caused some small problems that might be overlooked, we’ll see

I like the tall safety out of Plano East, Lyndell Johnon. He could spin down to linebacker and we need a Lyndell on the team

  30. Brandon Williams looks real nice. Kinda Jamal Charles plus 20 lbs-ish looking on his highlight reel. For those interested Rivals actually has a video available for non subscribers.

Anyone know which of these guys will be attending the first or second junior days?

  31. I watch dem dang ol videos man yall didnt see no running back and dang ol fumble the ball man that coach lost that ol dude threw the ball hit that dude in the head ref said man thats like 15 dang ol yards man.

If these two guys only managed to muster five starts each for their high school teams, I don’t want either of them.

“We took David Terrel to continue the trend of big wide recievers that grow into flex guys.”

This is just great news! Is there any chance we land his former teammate Tom Brady?

Fact Checker’s brother Whitey McWhitewhite-Ashenpale adds:
“Quandre Diggs: Quintin Jammer’s little brother.”

How could they possibly be brothers? They don’t even share a last name..
    Quite a quandary…

  34. Damn, I missed on Rasco. Yes, he’d be a great get.

  35. “Trey Meteyor: Sounds fast. Cosmically.”

I laughed, then wondered aloud “Wouldn’t it be ironic if one of the knocks on him was lack of speed/quickness?” Turns out that such is the case according to his Scout profile. That said, he’s still a top priority for both OU and Texas, and that’s all I need to know about his talent level.

I had completely forgotten about Jay Guy. At this point, it appears most everyone else outside of Nebraska has, too.

  36. Does Evangel still have the policy of making their players repeat 8th grade? That makes me skeptical of highly-rated kids from Evangel. Aside from maybe the Pittman brothers, the highly-rated Evangel kids I can recall turned out to be good but not great college players (Stevie Lee, Geiger, the Bootys).

  37. Saw tape of Metoyer, Nate. That guy is the epitome of slow. Like, John Chiles or Cameron Kenney slow…

Good call on Goodwin. That slipped my mind.

Some people rave about Metoyer. I forgot who it was that scouted him, but he said that Metoyer was better than D. White. I don’t buy it.

Has anyone seen film on Onyegbule? I’m having trouble getting excited about him.

  40. “That guy is the epitome of slow. Like…Cameron Kenney slow…”

    That is unpossible.

  41. Gerry Hamilton’s a huge fan of Metoyer. He’s supposedely one of those slow guys that puts the defender on his hip and catches everything

  42. I heard Metoyer might have some academic issues.

  43. Lots of “academic issues” are over hyped at this time of year for JR’s in HS. We have had many stars roam the 40 who had grade issues when they were half way through JR year. But we did not try to lock up our class this early 5 years ago.

Was Jacob Hester an Evangel guy?

  47. I just watched Rivals’ Brandon Williams film, and also have seen ESPN’s. Neither impressed me :-/ He looks extremely slow and definitely wouldn’t be able to overcome our poor blocking scheme in the backfield. Between he and Green, I don’t even see a comparison…

Slow? You need to get high speed internet. Or something.

I see it opposite of you. Also Green doesn’t seem to like contact. Whether either of them can actually overcome our blocking scheme is the million dollar question.

  49. Williams looks stupid fast. Kinda runs like Chris Jones with the crazy arms. The difference being that he looks quite a bit larger and he seeks out contact.

I gotta disagree with Blake here

  50. hat makes me skeptical of highly-rated kids from Evangel. Aside from maybe the Pittman brothers, the highly-rated Evangel kids I can recall turned out to be good but not great college players (Stevie Lee, Geiger, the Bootys).

Not Brock Berlin. He wasn’t good or great.

  51. Great write-up. I don’t disagree on any position.

Reed is reportedly 6′6 not 6′3.

  52. I keep seeing a lot of Williams = Barber comparisons on other boards but the kid is two inches taller and 20 lbs lighter. They got the wrong Minnesota Gopher. His upright running style is a lot more like Maroney, especially before Williams cut off his Predator dreads halfway through the season.

He does have great vision and a good burst through creases that don’t seem to be there a la a young, gangly Ced Benson.

I also like the two in-state LBs we’re after in this class. Wallace and Edmond will light your ass up.

At WR we’ll probably go after Marquis Jackson and Desmond Roland as ATHs along with Onyegbule/Metoyer and see which one wants to jump onboard early Shipley.

  56. Who invited indiahorn?

  57. “I like Roland as a WR.”

He grew up in Oklahoma and is said to be an OU lean at this point.

  58. I have do have high speed internet :)

I just don’t see it with the kid, hopefully I’m wrong. I’m tired of how bad our RB recruiting has been these past few years. But, If Mal Brown commits on junior day I’ll be satisfied. Everything after that is just gravy :D

I agree do agree that if we land Malcolm Brown we’re set and everything else is buttuh. But, we do need more than one rb and luckily for us this is the year to pluck.

Apparently Giles and Muschamp were at Klein Collins checking out 5′9″ 170 lb corner Charles Jackson. We’ve stated we need corners. Kid runs a 4.39 (allegedly) and has a 38″ vert (also allegedly).

  60. Looks like we’ve made contact with a cover corner out of Florida and an interior Olineman from New Mexico. Me rikey.

It’s all about content for ESPN — even mediocre content.

a great first round of the tournament from an excitement standpoint, very mediocre from a gambling standpoint.

A poll of media buyers from the major agencies overhwhelmingly showed that advertisers believe that the NCAA will expand, and the tournament will join the BCS on ESPN.

In the midst of March Madness, St. Patrick’s Day, house guests, nice weather outside and a host of other distractions I still managed to come across quite a few interesting college football stories this week. Here we go.

Mike Leach and Craig James were apparently in the same room this week and nobody wrestled.  Bummer.  Leach

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

Last year’s team was the hardest to watch. Just watching AJ Abrams, who I don’t hate as much as most, run around like a

Agreed on Damo being my favorite Longhorn basketball player, I wish him all the best.

This was definitely the worst, by far.

Don’t have time to address each and every comment now, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone for contributing to the site this season. It’s made it a lot of fun to follow a team that’s tough to watch at times.

Also, I wanted to thank you for the kind words as

    Trips,

Great work all year long. Love the passion. The fact that you kept writing these (even around the birth of a child), is fantastic, shows your commitment, and is a little freaky. :-)

I think you showed great restraint in this post. It would have been easier to “go off” on Barnes.
