Great work all year long. Love the passion. The fact that you kept writing these (even around the birth of a child), is fantastic, shows your commitment, and is a little freaky. :-)
I think you showed great restraint in this post. It would have been easier to “go off” on Barnes.

Missouri pulling away from Clemson (68-60) with 7 to play…knew I should have never bet on Oliver Purnell, even if it was against this Missouri team.

SydneyCarton said:

Big Duke-
I think that’s an incorrect assessment. Most people would take the trade off of losing Muschamp if it meant retaining Brown for much longer, say 5-6 years instead of the oft whispered 2-3.
I however, am NOT one of those people.
BEHorn said:
January 14th, 2010 at 8:40 am
bigduke – no, I don’t think that’s right. If I were trying to gauge the Longhorn zeitgeist, I’d say it’s this:
Mack is our best head coach since DKR (and arguably best ever). Muschamp is our best DC since Leon Fuller. We dread losing either guy, but:
A. If Muschamp left, we’d need another high-calibre DC and we’d have a future HC search on our hands — but, we’d still have a top 1/2 head coach who’s shown (between Robinson, Chizik and Muschamp) that he can upgrade the position. BUT,
B. If Mack left, we’d have to either promote a guy who might still be a year or two away from being HC-ready, while also needing to find a DC.
In other words, “A” = 1 problem, but “B” = 1.5 and possibly 2 problems. “B” will be resolved after another couple of years, which is why I’m guessing that 2011 is Mack’s last season.

To add to what others have said BigDuke,
We have had 4 defensive coordinators in the last 6 seasons. This year we saw our defense grow leaps and bounds because the players actually had 2 years in the same system but before this season our defense had suffered greatly because of the revolving door (and a soupcon of sub-par coaching IMO).
I think for many, myself included, we dreaded having to go through the search and having to start over with another guy and another system all over again. Add in the fact that this is the guy that most if not all are excited about handing the keys to pretty soon and it would be hard if not darn near impossible to replace him.

I wouldn’t be too super crazy about either scenario. But if you gave me a choice between A) Mack retires now, Muschamp takes over, Major to OC or B) Muschamp leaves now, we search for a new DC, Davis still mouth-breathing in the press box, I’ll take option A.

I think we only lose Muschamp after next season if the UGA job opens up. I can’t think of any other job that he would take, except maybe Florida if Meyer can’t shake whatever is ailing him. But I think Florida would hire a proven HC or look to its own coordinators first. Most other top ten jobs either just hired someone or have a head coach thats not going anywhere. Root for the bulldogs in 2010!
At the end of the MNC, I predicted we would win it all in 2011. Then Gilbert declares, Mack to AD, and Boom takes the reins. I’ll send a calendar invitation when I get a chance.

No one can deny the toughness, personality, and character of this team since WM arrived. Outside of the supremely talented 2005 team, can we say that about another MB team? WM has completely transformed the attitude of the whole program. Does anyone doubt we get run out of the stadium in Pasadena under similar circumstances without WM? Not to mention the fact that we are probably not there anyway. Losing him would be a travesty regardless of what the folks at Belmont say or the idiots over at Orangebloods say. Chizik and Robinson while improvements over Bull Reese were vastly overrated.
We have the perfect person to take over this program once MB hangs it up. MB has been the best thing that’s happened since DKR, but this program will be just fine with WM at the controls and might even be elevated. I don’t know if the same thing can be said if we lose WM.

The Athletic Department at the University of Texas would like to issue the following statement from UT Defensive Coordinator, Will Muschamp.
“I am very happy at Texas and planning on being here a long time. I am not interested in the Head Coaching Position at (insert school name here). I have not been contacted, nor have I interviewed for the position at (insert school abbreviation here). Let’s place emotion aside and look at the financials.
Salary: 2010-11
- WM is 38. At the end of the 2011 season, he will be 40, and he’ll make $1.8M between now and then.
- MB is 58. At the end of the 2011 season, he will be 60, and he’ll make $10M between now and then.
- These are such nice round numbers (40, 60, $10M) that it would make sense if MB retired after 2 more seasons.
Salary: 2012 & beyond (conservative estimates)
- Once WM is promoted to HC, he will probably not make quite as much as Mack to begin with, say $4M.
- If he proves to be a coaching legend, he will coach at Texas until he is 60, which is 20 seasons as HC. With the way coaching salaries are escalating, he’d easily be making $15 by 2031.
- Assuming a linear salary progression over 20 years (i.e. yr1 is $4M, yr2 is $4.58M… yr20 is 15M), he will make $190M as Longhorns HC + 1.8M over the next two years: TOTAL = $191.8M
- If he went to Tennessee now and became a coaching legend there, he would still not command as high a salary as a Texas coaching legend, so a reasonable estimate is that he’d start at $3M there in 2010 and end up at $12M in 2031.
- Assuming the same linear salary progression over 22 years, he would make $165M as a legendary Vols HC.
Considering salary alone, these are the kinds of numbers that a guy like WM is going to be looking at. Not how much he can make in the next two years, but how much he can make over the next 20. Also, just on recruiting potential alone, he has a much better chance of becoming legendary at Texas then at Tennessee.
Something that a lot of people have a hard time doing (or even understanding) is delaying gratification. That is what WM appears to be doing now, much to my relief. Often, when you delay gratification, you take a hit up front but are ahead in the end.

You also have to consider the current condition of the Tennessee program right now. It’s pretty doubtful that Kiffy left it in anything but a shambles. Why walk away from a known winner to a thankless job with a fanbase that has outrageous expectations? Vols aren’t going to be winning 8-10 games a year anytime soon. Their next HC will have 3 years and then get canned. Coach Boom knows that.
ghostofagroundgame said:

Maybe it’s just me, but for now I’d take Mack over Muschamp. Bird in the hand and all. We know what we get with Mack as HC. Consistent winning program, consistent top recruiting classes, consistent lack of NCAA problems. HC is a lot different from a coordinator. Muschampe MAY be great at all of the behind the scenes stuff Mack is great at, but there are no guarantees.
magnusbleuveigner said:
January 14th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
You know what you get with Muschamp though too. A bad ass, crunk, mother effin D. That will make you successful at the very least, possibly great. He’ll recruit like a mother. No way he’s not great.
Mack is great, but he’s won one Championship, and it took having the greatest CFB player ever having one of the greatest CFB performances to do it.
There’s a little risk reward to it. Sure Mack is going to have his 10 wins no matter what, but I don’t want that 10th win coming in the Alamo Bowl.
Eskimohorn said:

I think the #1 reason Muschamp passed on the Tennessee job is that he and THE UT have a transition or at least he has a plan of action in his mind. Given the Tennessee scenario he had a few days if not hours to decide and figure things out and then a few weeks to right the recruiting.

If forced to choose, I would keep Muschamp at the cost of losing Mack/GD (especially if Mack becomes AD). Getting rid of GD would be a big step forward. The UT O has gotten so soft lately. Mack used to balance GD’s tendency towards softness but not lately. I’m not convinced about Major as OC, Muschamp should get a proven OC.

Kafka, by the time Muschamp is head coach, if that takes place, he would have had plenty of time to guage Applewhite’s readiness. If Kyle Shanahan can put up ridiculous passing numbers in the NFL when the talent is fairly equal, I think you can assume that Applewhite will fair well with a considerable talent advantage. He’s put his time in, he’s earned his shot. Or maybe Chris Simms should take over?
kafka said:
January 15th, 2010 at 10:56 am
The putting his time in argument is not persuasive to me.
Major did well at Rice but had a lot of friction with his head coach. Major did not do as well under Saban. That is a concern. Saban is a great coach. Being mentored by GD is a concern.
The main concern, if I am a head coach just promoted from DC, is that I want a proven star OC. Major is the UT RB coach and UT’s running attack sucks. I want an OC in the mold of the OU OC, a guy who believes in a balanced, multiple attack.
Major is a hero but is not necessarily the best available OC in the world.
magnusbleuveigner said:
January 15th, 2010 at 11:11 am
You mean a balanced attack like the one Major played in while qb? Also, my scenario is predicated on Muschamp guaging Applewhite’s abilities the last few years. IF he thinks he’s ready, then the fact Major has put in his time and has been loyal to the school should factor in.
I’d be willing to wager that Major rolls his eyes at a lot of GD’s playcalling. Our running attack does suck but it’s hard to measure Major’s roll in that. McWhorter sucks, GD sucks, I’m not so sure that Applewhite sucks.
I do love OU’s offensive schemes. The balance and the ability to rack up yards both through the air and on the ground are quite appealing not only in winning all styles of games but also in recruiting.
kafka said:
January 15th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
If Major rolls his eyes at the current strategy, he should propose changes that will improve the running game that he can sell to GD, Mack, and Muschamp. If Major succeeds, that is a good sign. Otherwise..
The UT run game woes may not be Major’s fault, but they don’t help his cause. You don’t promote people for not rocking the boat, you promote them for achieving success. I don’t see Major’s success at RB coach.
Having said all that, I would definitely prefer Major to GD at OC. At a minimum, the search for GD’s replacement should be nation wide. The next OC must have demonstrated proficiency in both the run and pass.
