That’s quite a stretch to view the away goals rule as a harkening to the territorial origins of the game. The game is now split between matches taking place entirely in one town or the other.
The rule is a bad one, IMO. You don’t even have to take it to its logical extreme

Baylor hasn’t beaten Texas three times in the same season since 1981-82. Can we break that streak tonight?
Rather than some esoteric discussion of the relative merits of each team, I think it’s relevant to do a quick look at the stats from our first two matchups.

Secondly, no doubt, Jerrod Johnson was on fire. If he plays like that every game next year, the Ags are going to be tough

I like Tuberville and what he did for many years in the SEC, but…..
In the story from ESPN, “Tuberville, 55, became a strong candidate when it was determined he would not insist on hiring his own staff, the source said. Tuberville also will not cost Tech a contract buyout.”
This proves to me that, not only was it a money deal to shoot Leach, but the factors listed demonstrate that Tech either doesn’t have or doesn’t want to spend the money necessary for competing at the top. They’ll be fine in the near term, but this could be the beginning of a decline if they can’t compete financially.

Nice hire – definitely the best option they had available. But, he must bring in a very creative-minded OC, or he will not be able to be competitive. Tech needs a gimmicky offense to survive against the big boys – they cannot recruit heads up with the likes of Texas and OU, and will always have a talent disadvantage.
But he will make worlds of difference on the defensive side of the ball.
Good for Tech.

I remember an article a few years ago about how Auburn had enrolled illiterate football players (seriously, they could not read) and then created learning disability courses, just for them. A booster had helped “endow” the TA teaching fees for the classes. This was when Tubs was the coach.
Tuberville is stepping in to an entirely different world. Totally different.
He is a good coach, but this is a bad match that will not end well.

I’m not sure about this. Seems like there is destined to be a lag-time in which Tuberville will be stuck with Leach-system recruits, probably for a couple of years. I just can’t see that working out very well. Maybe eventually — I always knew Tech would hire someone that Myers would fell comfortable taking goose-hunting, and Tuberville fits that bill.

Two things I would like to add:
1) Scip, I think, mentioned that the problem with this o-line was in large part due to upper body strength. That seemed obvious when watching the Davis, McCoy, and Hall’s PC prior to the Rose Bowl. I could swear that McCoy’s shoulders are as broad as Hall’s shoulders are. Hall does have more padding.
I have seen pictures of two of these guys and they don’t look fat, neither did Studdard. At least one of them, I think, played some defensive line, as well. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Hall looked not only nice at the PC, he looked cherubic. Somehow that just sends the wrong message. Don’t get me wrong, maybe he did exactly as he was coached; however, at least on the field, I want to see ‘a dude with a ‘tude”and some passion. Colt is a genuine, good guy, but he showed a great deal of passion and attitude on the field over the last four years.
2) Tuberville: There is an old expression that says ‘where there is smoke there is fire’. There was never any ’smoke’ around Leach, then suddenly, this story breaks about A James, and the Tech administration is all over it right before the $800K was to be paid. The situation always had an odor.
I hope that Tech is forced to pay Mike Leach the $800,000 + the buy-out for the contract + punitive damages, because his career has been damaged. If punitive damages are not applicable, make Tech pay the full contractual obligation for the full term of the contract. Tech renewed his contract last year, and though the merits of the contract may be dubious, the Tech administration is responsible and should be held accountable.
If they are held accountable, would the $2 million per year become a little tough for the bad guys.

Brent Venables has caught a rare form of Chizik AIDS. He’s going backwards on defense. Someone has to at least try and slow the Texas machine down. Texas needs Tech to stay competitive for strength of schedule purposes and I think in the long run, we can do that with Tuberville. I’m not so sure about Ruff. Where were we going with that guy?

Football clearly was not the most most important thing in Chris Hall’s life. I wonder about some of the other olinemen. Sure, they are good guys, but I want my football team to be made up with guys who love football first and foremost. At least who love football enough to spend the summer before their senior year, in Austin and working out with the team….instead of some jaunt to the Holy Land. That could have waited for the rest of his life, he had one shot at a national title.

Do you think Tuberville is going to try to keep the offense as is? I assume he’ll install his own defense, but I’m really curious to see what happens with Leach’s recruits. Also, keeping Leach’s offense would allow TT to continue to hold its niche in recruiting for receivers and spread QBs, which is one of the best things the program has had going for it. Change the offense and then you are back to head-to-head with all of the big boys for talent, and that’s going to be a struggle.

ghost, he’ll keep it with an injection of a running game. I expect a 40%-45% run/55%-60% pass balance versus our current 30%/70% mix. He’s got more talent on the OL than Mack has to work with, so as long as he can make strides with the defense, we shouldn’t lose any more games on average than we did with Leach. And, we might be able to slow down Cody Hawkins.
