Overheard on the Longhorn Interwebs

Posted by Trips Right on December 30th, 2009 under Football, Recruiting

Not to steal any of HenryJames thunder, but there are some exciting things going on in recruiting for the good guys as we get closer and closer to national signing day.  Keep in mind this is an amalgamation of different sources from pay sites, free sites, other team sites, and 2:30 am drunk texting from Vasherized.  “Hey fucker, just got done polishing off some left over kalamata olive tapenade and choked down a few canapes.  They were just horrid.   Did you hear that Jackson Jeffcoat was sporting a burnt orange Izod polo with some white sperry topsiders?  What a beast.  Sounds like a good kid, too.  Out.”

But popped collars aside, it does indeed sound like this recruiting class is really coming together and should finish with a bang.  Rumor has it that Darius White and Jordan Hicks are hitting it off with all of the Texas commits, 5 or 6 of them I think, at the Under Armor all-America game functions.  So much so that the big bang could be that these two five star recruits are going to choose the Longhorns and may even make their official announcement this Saturday. That’s the rumor.

As for the aforementioned Jeffcoat, the rumblings are that Texas is still a comfortable leader as long as everything remains quiet on the UH coaching front due to Papa Jeffcoat.  If Sumlin stays, the Horns should be good to go. I’m still of the opinion that if Coach Tolly is thinking about retirement soon, why not reach out to Jim Jeffcoat as a possible future replacement. The man can coach, he’s a high character guy, and he’ll add some recruiting pop to the staff.

So, add these 3 five stars to what amounts to a top 5 class already, and this goes down as the best class Mack Brown has ever signed.  Even better than the Vince Young 2002 class. In addition to these three, it is also worth mentioning that we have some absolute war daddies already in the fold. In talking to folks that I respect on the matter, word is that Ashton Dorsey may be the best of the bunch and the best defensive tackle Mack Brown has ever recruited.   He’s a better player than the other highly touted DT committed to Texas Taylor Bible.  I talked some folks I know at Klein Collins and they said he was just unblockable, and Klein Collins has a solid Oline. Ashton also hit running back Mike Rozier, Jr. so hard that Tom Osborn lost his dentures. Allegedly.

Make no mistake, the other DT Taylor Bible is no slouch provided he can keep his waitweight in control.  Todd Wright, holla.

The other player that everyone raves about is OLB Tevin Jackson. He’s the perfect edge rushing linebacker that Muschamp covets.

And of course, there’s always Reggie Wilson a pass rushing defensive end with potential that’s through the roof.

Now lets say the chips fall where want them come signing day.  Here’s your future front seven as they’re ranked by scout.com.

Two of the nation’s top 10 DT’s Taylor Bible (4) Ashton Dorsey (7)
Two of the nation’s top 10 DE’s Jackson Jeffcoat (1) Reggie Wilson (5)
Three of the nation’s top 20 LB’s Jordan Hicks (1) Tevin Jackson (7) Aaron Benson (19)

With an outside chance to land the nation’s third ranked OLB Corey Nelson.

Just a sick, sick class this staff is putting together. And one that should suffer much less attrition than the 2002 group.

Thoughts?

Tevin Jackson is the one that I’m excited about most. I think this guy would have been a stud despite previous LB coaching, but he coupled with Muschamp should be great. All the quotes I’ve read from him point to him being a ferocious, leader type.

I agree that this would be the best recruiting class Mack has ever had, and also if we land Hicks and Jeffcoat I can’t remember a better defensive class ever. I might be talking out of my ass there, but whatever.

Let’s hope these kids are truly high character kids like Marcus Davis, er, bad example.

This class promises to keep us in the top 5 for years to come. We’re also flexible in that we have some bonafide athletes that won’t have to be pigeonholed.

  2. > Make no mistake, the other DT Taylor Bible is no slouch

So is he impatient or fat?

  3. sure would love to see some heavyweight OLine come on the 40 acres…

Scag, that was last years class. This year we have one of the best guards and one of the best centers in the nation coming in. Next year is bountiful in state at OL. It would have been nice to land Matthews, but we won’t be talent deficient in my opinion. We might be coaching deficient however.

I also feel we might hate ourselves for not taking Evan Washington but with him being raw and our OL coaching being suspect he probably would have made Trey Allen look like a four year starter.

  5. It all starts in the trenches, which is what is so exciting about this class on defense. The other exciting thing is that the class of 09 was pretty damn good too. Between ‘09 and ‘10, that’s a fuckload of blue-chippers at pretty much every position besides RB and TE. Texas could be ridiculously loaded starting in 1-2 years.

  6. My thoughts are that missing this years National Championship game due to the bad economy won’t be such a big thing. I went in 2005 and I think that I will have the opportunity to go at least twice more in the next 5 years. That is what I think of this years class.

Bible did put on some bad “wait” but it could have had something to do with the shoulder surgery he had last spring (that’s what I heard, anyway). Bad weight = lack of explosiveness. Hopefully, we’ll have two active, badass DT’s in this class.

  8. I type with my ears you read with your eyes. Fuckers.

  9. How many camp fever guys have we taken so far in 2010? Zero?

Word on the street is that we’re in for some fireworks come junior day(s).

  10. “So is he impatient or fat?”

    Weight for it.

Good stuff and thanks for the heads up. Jeffcoat would be a nice hood ornament for an already stellar class.

The thought of that front seven is as alluring to HenryJames as a Tiger Beat centerfold.

“Word on the street is that we’re in for some fireworks come junior day(s).”

I hope we don’t pull another “Whaley” with this class. If Brown and Green are intent on lifting their skirts and going on the twelve month “Twat Tour”, let’s get Hershel Sims in the bag quick. Also, I’m not so sure that Sims isn’t just as talented and maybe more suited for our “watch the fuck out – here comes Suh”!! offense.

  12. Rumor has it that Darius White and Jordan Hicks are hitting it off with all of the Texas commits, 5 or 6 of them I think, at the Under Armor all-America game functions. Hey Trips,

Jordan told a rivals recruiting analyst at the UA practices that he was going to announce on NSD. Rumor/speculation is he wants to avoid all the crap he will catch back home in Ohio when he leaves the state for either TX or FL. If he waits till NSD there’s nothing the anybody back home can do about it.

  13. How does Sumlin to Tech change the Jeffcoat situation? Just out of curiosity — Tech is probably too dumb and backwards to actually hire Sumlin.

  14. ” If Brown and Green are intent on lifting their skirts and going on the twelve month “Twat Tour”, let’s get Hershel Sims in the bag quick.”

From what I’ve seen, I’d probably take Sims first anyway. And like you alluded to, he’s the best fit for our, ahem, “specialized” running game.

Don’t know if I’d rate Sims ahead of Malcolm Brown from what I’ve seen. Brown seems to be very fast for also having power. I’d take either/both in a heart beat.

Also as a side note, Malcolm Browns DT team mate Marquise Anderson is very talented. Already holds an OU offer. Of course now we’re stacked at that position and will make Desmond Jackson priority number 1 at that position.

Truth to the rumors of Aaron Green losing some bloom? I know his stats were very pedestrian.

  16. There is another special 2011 RB from Brookshire that the Texas coaches are on. At least that’s what I’m told.

nordy – I know 2011 is “The Year of the Back”, but for Pedro to make my wildest dreams come true, give me Sims in this upcoming class and Aledo’s Jonathan Gray in 2012. The staff can then kick their feet up and I won’t say a word..

Jermichael Selders would also give his third nut to go to UT per a friend on the Cy Creek staff. More of an athlete type but has speed to burn. Of course we’re on a neverending search for the next on field version of Ramonce.

  19. Well that was Monroe, until he also because the next off-field version of Ramonce.

  20. I am betting big on Brown and Bergeron being the guys on Junior Day. Don’t know how else to type it.

  21. Malcolm Brown? NFW! Nice.

  22. magnusbleuviegner said:

whoopspat, for my benefit, is the Brookshire Bros. named Brandon Williams?

I have friends that have seen him play and they say he’s damn good, but they’re not sure he’s Texas good.

  23. Magnus, here’s what I know: His film looks good, he runs a 10.6, and informed people think he’s special. Time will tell.

  24. jermauria rasco from louisiana there are rumors that he could commit at the 1st junior day. he’s worried about if les miles will be coaching in 2011 and loves the fact that muschamp puts lineman in the leaugue.

  25. jermauria rasco could comit on junior day. he’s worried about leslie miles future at lsu and loves muschamp cause of him putting lineman in the league.

  26. I’m also intrigued with Kolby Griffin, Greg Daniel’s teammate in Houston. He’s gotten decent reviews, is young for his grade, has a monster wingspan, and is an absolute lock to commit if he’s offered. A&M had him in for their junior day but he didn’t get offered. I’m curious to see if that’s an indication of what the coaches think of his skill level, A&M’s numbers at the position, or something else.

It’s pretty clear when you look back on some of the early top 100 Texas 2010 lists that there is still quite a bit of uncertainty in how the talent shakes out at this point in time. I’m looking forward to our Junior days to find out where all the Chris Jones and Adrian Phillips are in Texas.

  27. GerryH was absolutely bonkers about Rasco back when he was still at BOB (RIP). Said something to the effect of Rasco > Jeffcoat, Reggie Wilson.

  28. magnusbleuveigner said:

    December 30th, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Kolby Griffin missed a lot of time this year due to injury. People might want to see more of him before he’s offered.

No way Rasco commits that early. No way.

I was wondering the same thing on Jones and Phillips types. Also, our first take was a shock. Trey Hopkins. I think I have a good position by position feel on the offers, but their’s always surprises. I wonder how much of it is cat and mouse. I thought for sure we’d offer Daniel Noble, but then we jump out of the gates with the jewel (at that time anyway) in Bible and also Cotton. I HEART jr. day season.

  29. rasco from louisiana has commited according to my sources

  30. just kidding. the tight end out of washington are we gonna pursue him or take some crap player from in state. chris barnett is not very good plus hes raw.

  31. christian westerman from arizona is he comn to junior day what kind of interest does he have in us

  32. we cant take brown or bergeron with our shit scheme we need green or sims and someone from oos please.

  33. darius white is going to osu he wants to start immediately

  34. magnusbleuveigner said:

    December 30th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Austin Seferian Jackson is going to have to keep in touch with our coaches a la Hicks. He made it to camps last summer which is a start.

Westerman’s father speaks glowingly of UT but you’d have to think watching the NU game he might start to wonder about his son surviving in the trenches. Hopefully, HOPEFULLY, we perform well against Bamas front for more than one reason. Also, if Walters comes back healthy, and Snow plays tough, and Tray Allen competes hard, maybe our OL will have a more admirable mean streak.

Malcolm Brown fits any scheme and if Bergeron is another Cody, you take him.

Hunter Hearst Helmsley, didn’t know you were a ‘horn fan!! Darius can play anywhere Malcolm isn’t. Last I checked that leaves 2-3 open spots. Who would you rather have throwing to you? GG or _______?

  36. hicks from everything ive heard is a longhorn he loves muschamp

  37. jenkins is a must because there are no elite tight ends in state. hopefully mack doesnt settle
i read somewhere were in westermans top 5. other guys who have expressed interest in texas early are antwaun woods and greg townsend jr of calif. now days most calif recruits want to get out usc is fading and all the major violations.

  38. who commits at the 1st junior day in you guys opinion and where do we stand with sedric flowers

  39. Isn’t Sims supposedly a big OU lean? I thought I read that he was a lifelong Sooners fan.

  40. jeffcoat is probably a sooner

  41. for 2011 we need redneck, badboy, gangsta o-lineman not the pussies we ve been recruiting. kids who fight for their teammates and have had to work for everything they have. not good christian boys

  42. How many different names are you going to post under?

  43. Word is that one of the TEs we are looking hard at is Maurice McFarland (no relation to McFatland out of Lufkin) out of El Paso.

  44. why didnt you recruit me i only wanted 100,000 dollars.

  45. tu cant get recruits because they have no tradition while elite players want to be aggies.

  46. tu cant recruit aggies get best players in texas

  47. Doesn’t Hicks want to enroll in January? That would rule out a wait until NSD.

And all the talk about our offense needing a scat-back is crap. We need a north-south runner who hits the hole fast. There’s a reason Newton is our most effective back despite having the worst measurables. He runs like Charles, without the extra gear (or 2).

  48. texas needs leroy scott best cb recruit in country

I have a feeling you’ll love Shead, at LB. Provided he can get PT over the two in the fold and the one (fingers crossed) on his way. Shead already has a 400+ bench and has decent speed. Hopefully we land a stud or two in the next class and we can put Shead where ever he fits.

  57. I hope so. But Christ, we need some RB help. Any word on Whaley? Can we get him on the Pittman program?

It appears that Geoff Ketchum decided to start posting here under the names John, Richard, Joe, hhh, hour and whynot. Then in an unforseen plot twist, Billy Liucci started posting under the names texags and ag-in-texas.

The only legit one was Trent Richardson. Hopefully his surprising admission will get him ruled ineligible for the 7th.

  60. Yeah, that was an unusually extended bit of troll-dom for this board. We usually viciously beat down imposters in a manner that keeps them from reemerging.

  61. That schizophrenic stream of consciousness was either 1.) A Sooner troll, 2.) An Aggie Troll, or 3.) Geoff Ketchum lashing out.

  62. Hang in there Rus. He’ll have you at safety soon.

  63. Well, you type like an LSU player/fan, that’s for sure.

  64. junior day list please

  65. Good gawd, I thought somebody’s special needs 10 year old had ventured into Dad’s study after reading that incoherent shit.
Anyway, does Whaley have the hands to play TE? I know he has the size right now, but does he have a the mean streak required to block on the edge?
As magnus pointed out about Shead: Take all 6′ 2″, 210 pounders that bench 400+. We’ll find a place for Shead, I’m just not sure that it’s at RB.

  66. magnusbleuveigner said:

    December 30th, 2009 at 7:34 pm

Not sure about Whaley playing TE. The question was posed a while back and I think it was Scipio that pointed out he has short arms that would seem to hinder him in the blocking game. If he has short arms you’d really think Barrett Matthews has short arms since he’s a couple inches shorter. I’m not sure. You’d think maybe he’d Melton it and move to DE, but with the recruits coming in at that position he’s got a lot of catching up to do. Oh Christine Michael what I wouldn’t give for you.

Quick list of probable Jr. day invites off the top of my head:
QB: JW Walsh, David Ash, Michael Brewer
RB: Sims, Brown, Green, Bergeron (with others scheduled for the second Jr. day. I could see UT entertaining 7 or 8 offers if the top 4 seem disinterested
WR: Miles Onyegbule and Jaxon Shipley (consensus is both verbal when offered or shortly after) and Trey Metoyer. Jeff Howe has Metoyer as his #3 recruit in the state and says he’s maybe a better version of Darius White. If we land White and the first two verbal we might pass on Metoyer. If the staff loves Metoyer as much as Howe, they’ll probably offer if nothing else to keep him out of OU’s back pocket.
TE: The El Paso kid McFarland and Chris Barnett.
OL: Sedrick Flowers, Spencer Drango, Taylor Doyle and I’m drawing blanks right now on the rest.
DE: Nathan Hughes, Cedric Reed and Rasco
DT: Marquise Anderson, Desmond Jackson, and maybe one of the West Texas guys.
LB: Not really sure here. Good thing we’re stocking up this year. Here’s some maybes: Chet Moss, PL Lindley, that kid from Daingerfield, and a couple others perhaps.
DB: Leroy Scott, Sheroid Evans (land those two and the positiion is a success already) and then some maybes like Lyndell Johnson a monster safety that might grow into a LB.
Ath: Quandre Diggs (Quentin Jammers brother) and Steve Williams (Aaron Williams cousin)

These aren’t for sure and none of this is earth shattering, just thought I’d help out those that don’t have the time or want to. Oh yeah, the Westerman kid will definitely get an invite.

  67. we need westerman that kid has a mean streak

  68. Thanks for the info, magnus. I too will never understand the rationale behind not offering C. Michael when I can’t get a handle on where Whaley fits on this team.
Great to see Bible’s teammate J.W. Walsh will be on hand for Jr. Day. That kid more than held his own in a district that included Sr. QB’s James Franklin (Lake Dallas, Missouri commit) and Scotty Young (Denton Ryan, TT commit, for now).

  72. “Was he with OSU players or at Deions house or both?”

Actually, I saw him, Deion and Dez at Hardbodies in Arlington. Deion didn’t know whether to spank that ass or pray, so he chose to PREY. Dez broke out a Scooby Doo coloring book while T. Boone was “making it rain”. I got my ass kicked because I’m white and not a multi-millionaire and couldn’t make it mist…

  74. magnusbleuveigner said:

    December 30th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

It’s been rumored that McWhorter is gone after this game. What I was referring to was, first and foremost, our OL is going to have to perform much better against Bama than they did against NU. Secondary is the recruiting ramifications. I think our OL reputation took a drastic hit this year, and I don’t want to see us saddled with more Hall’s and Tanner’s in the next cycle. A guy like Westerman isn’t going to go somewhere where the OL is getting treated like stepchildren. Westerman is the odds on favorite to be the top OL in the nation next year. That could change, but this time last year when they annointed Seantrel Henderson king OL they were right on the money. He would be possibly our biggest get next year.

Fear not though, the DL’s we face next year aren’t going to be as dominant do to graduation and underclassmen declaring for the draft. We might also see some addition by subtraction next year on our OL.

  75. Trips once used olive tapenade as a personal lubricant. True story!

Our window on White closed as fast as it opened when he didn’t commit after his visit in December. He’s Okie State or LSU bound.

Honestly, this was my thinking throughout the Nebraska debacle. Mack is loyal to a fault, but embarrass him badly enough and he’ll cut some throats (see: the Akina/MacDuff circus). “Embarrassing” certainly describes the performance of the O-line in the CCG, and it’s been a weak point all year.

I haven’t heard any rumors, but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see McWhorter massaged into retirement this spring.

Baylor has the horses to make it to Indy, but Scott Drew is the Mike Gundy of college hoops. He’ll find a way to blow it.

“And I can understand the Longhorn fan thinking mighty Baylor goes all the way. After they bitch slapped the Horns three times this year, they are the basketball equivilent of the three foot long rat my wife saw in the garage.”

I actually like Baylor based on how they played Kansas and to an extent KSU.

    Of course not.

Here is another bold claim – all 7 Big XII teams bolt out the gate and win their first round games.

Work, I love Xavier. Really athletic team that feeds off of mismatches that superstar guard Jordan Crawford creates. Hell, he’s good enough to carry X past Minnesota and even Pitt if he’s hot.

The problem for XU is that they don’t defend as well as they have in the past. They’ll have

Ag, cool, I agree with pretty much everything you say except your claim that you dictated tempo to UNM. But no biggie.

The reason I like Siena is that it’s basically the same team that beat Ohio State in the tourney last year and then played a 1 seeded Louisville team down to the wire.

    NU’s Ugly Duckling Program

Read that and you’ll say to yourself “State of the Union of…what??”

I know that’s what most of you will say. It’s not really shock or surprise that NU has a basketball program, though. It’s that sense of shock and surprise to anyone (especially our Barking Brethren over at OBK) that

I’ll say the same thing I did at March to March…

I love this Baylor team. They’ve got all the pieces for a run and they’re in a ridiculously underwhlemingly regional, BUT…

It’s Baylor. They haven’t won a tournament GAME since I think 1950…now we’re expecting them to go out and win 4 in a row?

    Certainly those

Speaking of history, when was the last time Duke got out of the round of 16?

Villanova has something going on underneath the surface. They look beatable.

Baylor’s playing really good ball with really good players. I guess that’s why I picked them, but I’m probably overthinking things and should have written Duke in.

Exactly, HipHop. It’s a brand recognition issue.

That’s a truckload of pressure. Maybe they have it. Maybe Scott Drew is the man. I just wouldn’t bet my house on it. But I’d love to see it.

I started watching the NCAA tournament in 1997 or 1998 and in 1998, Valpo’s incredible run to the sweet 16 hooked me for life. Since then, I’ve completely ruined a spring break cruise because, let’s face it, the NCAA tournament is way better than sitting by a pool. Now I fully intend to crush my

Why? Three seeds make it all the time? Put them in a bracket with the weakest 1 seed and one of the weaker 2 seeds and they have a great shot. Especially with two games in Houston.

“Sometimes, I watch the 4th quarter of the title game.”

The best is when it’s tied at the end of regulation, and they have a shoot-out. And if they’re still tied at the end of that, they play an extra 18 holes the next day. “Extra innings” is what they
