Longhorns in the League, and Other NFL Notes

Posted by EyesOfTX on December 27th, 2009 under Football

We’ll keep updating this as we become aware of additional ex-Longhorn performances…

Jamaal Charles and Cedric Benson had a nice duel in the Chiefs/Bengals contest today.  Jamaal got himself to within striking distance of a 1,000 yard season with 102 yards on 24 carries, while Benson ran up 133 yards on 29 attempts.  Cedric is now up to 1,251 yards on the season – Jamaal can join him in the 1,000 club with 139 next week.

Quan Cosby got some more PT for the Bengals today, and had 1 catch for 8 yards.

David Thomas had 5 catches for just 25 yards as the Saints’ dropped a 20-17 decision to Tampa Bay.  This 2nd straight loss by the Saints makes one wonder exactly how impressive the Cowboys’ win last week really was.

Vince Young and his Tennessee Titans were eliminated from playoff contention on Friday night, losing to a very good San Diego Charger team.  Vince, to put it mildly, did  not have a great game, and we’ll leave it at that.  None of the other Titan/Longhorns did much, either.  Just a bad night all around for the guys in sky blue.

Adding to the impressive list of ex-Longhorn RBs seeing action in the NFL, Chris Ogbannaya finds himself getting some totes for the Rams today.

Ricky Williams was limited to 35 yards rushing on 10 carries in Miami’s loss to the Houston Texans today.

Speaking of the Dallas Cowboys, I believe they will clinch a playoff spot if they beat the Redskins tonight, after the Giants’ humiliating 41-9 asskicking at the hands of Carolina earlier today.  The game will feature several ex-Longhorn greats – Derrick Dockery, Mike Williams and Brian Orakpo for the Redskins, Big Leonard Davis and Roy Williams for the Cowboys – who will make the game well worth watching.

Your additions are welcome.

  1. Seems Jamaal was ran out of Texas.

Glad we got that Nebraska win before he split.

10 carries for Ricky? Don’t know the context but that seems low.

  2. Jermichael Finley had a big day for the Packers. 3 catches for 80 yards.

  3. Sailor — Ricky’s shoulder is jacked up and he was obviously playing with some pain.

  4. Yeah, it does seem low. The Texans got out to such a huge lead – 27-3 at one point – that Miami just had to go to the air. Henne attempted 55 passes on the day.

    Hook ‘em!!!

  5. Gotcha. Thx.

  6. ghost – thanks for the update on Finley. I keep forgetting he’s up there.

    Hook ‘em!!!

  7. Jermichael >>> Tellus

  8. @Sailor

That is the first I’ve ever heard in terms of an explanation for why Jamaal left. Can that possibly be true?

  9. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but GD was probably right about telling Jamaal he needed to commit to football. His first few months in KC would seem to prove that out.

In any case, he’s been a helluva fantasy pickup the last 6 weeks. Glad he’s seeing starting minutes now.

  11. Well, Mercury Morris and his fellow band of insufferable 1972 Miami Dolphins will soon be popping the champagne – the Jets ust went 17 up on Indy with a little over 5 minutes to play. With Peyton Manning and most other Colt starters sitting the 2nd half out, this game is over, and so is the undefeated record for Indy.

    Shit.

    Hook ‘em!!!

  12. Do those ’72 Dolphin shitheads feel stupid that the Colts are basically saying “we don’t give a crap about going undefeated”?

The 2007 Horns (jamaal’s last team) underachieved as much as the 2008 Horns overachieved. If the coaches read a riot act to jamaal, they were probably doing the right thing.

Derek Lokey was active for the chiefs today, his first Sunday suited up.

  15. @ Sailor–

+1 from a diehard Kurosawa junkie.

  16. Anyone else think Whitten looked a step faster than Roy on that 70 yd reception?

  17. I don’t think asking your starting RB to commit to football and to attend spring practice is out of line.

  18. horn in exile – thanks for that bit of info. Good to see Lokey making progress up there.

  19. Well, Roy Williams is playing maybe even worse than usual tonight. So far, he’s fallen down on a double move route, tipped a ball up for an INT, and completely whiffed on a ball Romo delivered right into his chest. He did make an easy TD catch, but good lord, he is horrible overall.

On the bright side, Big Leonard is kicking ass in the running game yet again.

    Hook ‘em!!!

  20. Roy, WTF? I mean, shit. I don’t even want to watch him play anymore.

  21. nordberg, I don’t either. I wish the coaches would just bite the bullet and let Ogletree get the snaps. It’s just pathetic watching what Roy has become.

  22. I was about to sarcastically say that Roy is proving to be a solid #3 receiver in the NFL, but even solid #3′s don’t drop this many passes.

  23. How Jason Garrett still has a job is amazing.

    Hook ‘em!!!

  24. Eyes, I thought that I heard/saw Brian Robison’s name mentioned on a League Roster. Is he playing in the NFL?

  25. Robison is on the Vikings’ roster, and is getting some playing time as a backup DE.

  26. What happened with Robison? Maybe my memory is faulty (as I don’t follow the NFL much), but I thought he was playing pretty well for a while. Injury, performance, scheme … or bad memory much affected by strong drink?

I was under the impression that he was playing well. If you can’t play with that DL, then you can’t play at all.

Ced Griffin seems to impress as well.

  28. Richmond McGee, of all people, might make his own NFL debut tonight for the Chicago Bears!

    Hook ‘em!!!

  29. Pick by Ced Griffin and sack by B Robison on MNF.

  30. Robison is a pass rush specialist and has been used a lot. Looking good.

Mike Williams done for the season with a torn muscle in his foot. Too bad, it was a hell of a comeback story – from the couch to starting right guard.
