DJ Monroe & Christian Scott Eligible for Title Game

Posted by CloseToJumping on December 21st, 2009 under Football

Mack has reported it at his press conference. Halliburton is there, so if you need a “source”, it isn’t up on TexasSports yet, but it’s up at her Twitter: @suzhalliburton and Inside Texas is also there and reporting it.

This is good news for us. Scott can help out on Special Teams after practicing with the team all year. It would be idiocy not to have him unleashed on coverage teams. He was great there last year and we need the help.

Monroe clearly lied about staying in for curfew to the staff, so who knows how pissed they are at the guy. I hope he is back on kickoffs with Goodwin, but I am not sanguine on Brown enabling that to happen. I have even less hope that he’ll be incorporated into the offensive gameplan, but wish on that if you will.

The outlets are also reporting that Collins is eligible, but won’t play. He’s redshirting, but that’s good for us next season.

Thoughts?

  1. Also saw that Scott could see the field in the nickel, per Suzie.

  2. If Blaine Irby can play I say we pull his shirt off. It’s not like we’ll be back in this position next year. If we are, I will kiss his ass.

  3. With the upcoming holidays looming I hope Mack uses Monroe as a daily reminder to the team that shit can get ugly in a hurry.
Keep your powder dry till January 8th, then party like rock stars…or whatever the hell you do.

  4. Sugar, I’m not sure Irby will ever be playing again…I think you mean Collins…which I would leave on the bench unless he has been practicing with Colt all season…to much timing to work out.

  5. If we go nickel Scott MUST see the field. The other options are terible (Gideon and Brewster).

I hope DJ is returning kicks and getting on the field for a couple of snaps. He’s the RIGHT guy for screen passes, if we only threw some.

  6. Whats the big hype about Monroe? He made some plays against UTEP and Louisiana Monroe. Big fucking deal so did John Chiles. If anybody watched those two TDs he had you know anybody with competent speed could have returned them, especially the one against UTEP. We as a fan base constantly look for a savior for our POS offense. Guys that savior comes around once in a generation and his name was Vince Young. Goodwin is just as good maybe better than Monroe.

I don’t think Scott will see the field other than kickoffs. He just has not played enough and will be too rusty to put him on the field in the biggest game of the year.

The worst thing Mack said in the presser was that the team isn’t reporting until the 1st. All these guys are spending NYE at home with their friends. Stay down guys!

  8. All this news is great, but to me, the best news of the bunch is Collins regaining his eligibility. If he can remain that way, his return will make a huge difference in our offensive prospects for next season. We were looking at a situation in which we had one proven WR – Malcolm Williams – returning, one other WR – Marquise Goodwin – who appears to be a good WR, and a bunch of question marks. Collins will ensure we at least have a starting lineup of WRs that other defenses will have to respect.

As Tiger Woods would say, “Huge”.

    Hook ‘em!!!

  9. No, I meant Irby. But the last I heard was that he thought he’d be ready at the beginning of the season, but he wasn’t. They were worried he had drop foot, but didn’t and expect him back next season. But maybe that is old news and the outlook is worse. At this point the questions I ask myself if I am Irby is (1) Do I think I am going to get a decent shot at the NFL given my knee issues? and (2) Is it likely that this will be the biggest game I’ll ever play in? If the answer is No to 1 and Yes to 2, I would play. He would most likely be the starting (or #2) tight end given our problems there.

I agree with you about Collins, though. No sense in burning his shirt at a position of luxury.

Before his suspension Monroe was in the top 10 in avg. kickoff returns in college football. In less than 10 career games he also already holds the career KR TD record at UT. If that’s not potentially a big deal against a defense like Alabama I don’t know what is.

Combination of Monroe and Williams seem to have resulted in the best production this year, and I hope they go back to that.

Any guesses on the odds that Davis makes it back after the bowl game? For all the talk about what a model citizen he is on the internets, I was told when we were recruiting him that he was into some bad stuff. This same guy told me the same thing about Ramonce when he was in high school.

  12. Sugarpants -

Irby is not ready for game action. Maybe this spring.

  13. Horncasting,

The word is that he has fallen in with the wrong crowd. Some insiders I know say they doubt he returns. As in ever. We’ll see.

Fantastic. For all the handwringing we went through after the 2008 class in convincing ourselves that we were going after the “good guys,” we wind up with Vacarro “The Sorrow” and Purple Drank Davis in 2009.

  15. Mack Brown, I believe, said that Davis would not play in the MNC.

  16. Listen, I want a little bit of thug life on the team, I just want it displayed mostly on the field, as opposed to behind a wheel or on a basketball court.

I understand people having an interest in Collins returning, but he did little for me last year. Put him and James Kirkendoll in a bag, shake it up, and pull one out and throw them in the lineup and I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. They both drop routine passes and constantly do stupid shit on the field.

“Put him and James Kirkendoll in a bag, shake it up”

Can I add Chiles, Greg Davis and a menstruating wolverine to your bag before you shake it up?

  18. Collins had elevated his game and is much, much better than Kirkendoll/Chiles. He put on a show this summer and Colt loved throwing to him. That said, he sure does some stupid shit.

  19. MerHorn–

In the context of 2009 reality, your last post simply falls irrevocably flat. What happened during 7 on 7 in the summer means precisely dick at this juncture.

  20. listen to ctj, he knows dick.

  21. huh?

  22. I thought Kirk was better last year. If Collins would have regressed like Kirk did (and is known to occur pretty often with our offensive players), then I could see CTJ’s point. Collins in 08 = Kirk 08 but > Kirk 09.

  23. – The #2 team has won 6 of the last 7 MNC games.
    – Teams with that year’s Heisman winner are 1-6 in BCS MNC games.

Texas has this one in the bag.

  24. Dawg – that’s not the same bag that Old B. put the menstruating wolverine in, is it?

  25. We need Scott at safety in this game. Lots.

  26. Horncasting said:

    December 22nd, 2009 at 8:14 am

CTJ – respectfully disagree on Collins. At times in 2008 he and Colt were on the same page in terms of changing routes, reading blitzes, etc. to almost the same level of Colt and Shipley/Cosby. At the end of 2008 Colt also seemed to have gained a level of trust with him that I’m not sure he has with any receiver on the team this year that doesn’t live with him.

Who knows if he’ll be able to build the same relationship with Gilbert (or for that matter whether he’ll really be back next year at all), but I think you discount what he could have meant to the offense this year.

  27. I’m with Horncasting here. I remember viewing Collins as a noticeably better receiver than Kirkendoll, especially near the end of the year. I was always excited when Collins got the ball because of his ability to create after the catch. I NEVER felt that way about Kirkendoll.

  28. Reports on the interwebs have Scott wrecking shit in practice. He’s the perfect downhill safety to counter Bama’s pro style attack. I hope we unleash that evil motherfucker.

  29. If we lose Marcus Davis for good might we have some issues at DB in 2 years? Seemingly he must have been the most impressive of the frosh considering the amount of run he had gotten relative to the other young guys.

Just kinda scanning through recruiting 2007 and later and it doesn’t look quite as stocked as I might like, especially if Williams heads to the NFL after next year. Might need Cobbs and Phillips to get a look at DB and hope that one of those 2 can really play. Phillips is my pick for the kinda-under-the-radar recruit that ends up just being a player for the 2010 class.

  30. AS far as 2010 commits, I believe A. White and C. Byndom are the ones thought to be pure CB’s. Anyone have any input about these guys? White has slipped in the rankings, and reportedly was torched by Mike Davis.

CTJ may be a dick but he is a smart dick

I’d kind of like to see Cobbs get a shot at RB due to his obvious offensive skills.

On the other hand, if he and/or Phillips could make the transition to S, that could be unbelievably kick ass. Imagine a couple of guys who can scope an offense with ease, make alarmingly quick breaks on the ball and then do some serious damage on interception returns.

That’s an interesting situation for Collins.

In no other circumstance would I ever even consider burning a redshirt for one game, but…

If that one game was for the National Championship, and having Collins in at WR could make a difference….

    That’s less of a no-brainer.

  34. I think Scott is going to play a bigger role in the Texas defense than most are expecting. I’d play him on every obvious running down. He’s a 3rd year player who knows the defense well, and his lack of game experience this year is IMO not that relevant. If Texas was playing a team with a hot passing attack with a stud QB, I might feel a bit differently, but Alabama’s game is the power run, and Scott’s got some size, and he’s a big hitter. Neither Gideon nor Brewster are very good tacklers, and that’s a big potential minus vs the Tide. I also think he’s a potential key play on ST’s. Someone on the punt and K/O return teams has to step up, and his presence can’t hurt. I’d replace Curtis Brown with Scott. Curtis’ tackling has been poor on the return teams.

I think your overall point is a good one. Barnes is a “system” guy especially defensively, which plays into how he overall plays the game. QB  Sr. Taylor Potts/Sr. Steven Sheffield – We’ve all annointed Sheffield as the starter, and I think that’s the case if we continue to run 99% of our snaps

This notion of Hamilton as being a disaster area on defense is all a bit much. He rebounds extremely well which, if it wasn’t obvious, is extremely important in this game since it secures possession of the basketball. Winning in basketball is achieved through the scoring of baskets and it’s necessary to possess the basketball
