A few things of note at half.
1) Whats with the court? I’m sure the coaches are so pissed that they are so far away from the court. Watching a one armed Roy Williams climb up on the stage to iterate his point was kind of funny.
2) Nice that Jai Lucas is back.
3) Nice to see George W. in the house! Who was that sitting with him? I thought
4) Holy crap Dexter Pittman is good! He’s gotta be a top 5 pick.
5) I think we came out a little tight. I think we pull away and win by 15-20 points
6) Nevermind on point #5, 3 baskets in the last 45 seconds has Texas up 13 at half. Folks, this team is very, very, very good!
NY Horn said:

NORTH CAROLINA QUOTES
HEAD COACH ROY WILLIAMS
Two really big keys to the game: they have 60 rebounds, we have 41; they outscored us 27-11 on the backboards. My teams have always been really good rebounding teams but Texas killed us on the boards. Dexter Pittman kicked our tail by himself. He and Damion (James) had 30 rebounds by themselves. The other thing is, we always made a living getting the ball inside and getting to the free throw line and they shot 34 free throws and we shot 19. You can’t do those kinds of things.
On Texas: They’re a really good basketball team. To me, by the end of the season, this has the chance, in my opinion, to be the best Texas team (Coach Barnes) has had since he’s been there, and he took a team to the Final Four.
On his team’s struggles on the boards: They’re good. It’s not always something we’re not doing. They’re ranked second in the country for the reason. Dexter, you’ve got to be proud of the youngster to do what he has done. We wanted to get him in foul trouble and run him so he wasn’t in there as much and he played 34 minutes. We didn’t run him, we didn’t get him in foul trouble and now he’s in there and he’s a load inside.

December 19th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Balbay is disgustingly good. It’s impossible to qualify how important he is to this team. He didn’t have a great game, but he did his job and locked down defensively. He doesn’t need to shoot when Jordan, Avery, and J’Covan are out there. I was so pissed in that game hearing from Vitale about how “Balbay can’t shoot and is going to lose minutes” and “Brown got kicked off his high school team (he actually said the team got kicked off the team at one point, WTF?), when is he going to lose it?” Shut up!!!

gingerballs said:

I was a few beers deep after KU’s pathetic 2nd half effort against a 1-3-1, so I recognize every really good team this year has issues, but I thought Trips told me this was a lock-down defensive team some time ago? 48% from the floor and 54% from distance has me a bit concerned if I’m a ‘Horn fan.
None of the top teams are infallible but I was surprised to see you guys get suckered in to that type of game. Sure, it’s nice to know that you can beat that caliber of team playing that style but you could have won easier playing your style of game. If you slow that down to a low 80′s pace UT wins by 20 going away. Bradley was really fun to watch playing that style though, he plays fast and free better than most.
Obviously a really good win. “Having said that,” that kind of game could have gone down a lot differently if it wasn’t played in Texas. I really think Rick could have played to his strengths better.
Back to my mulling over of how Self did not have the team prepared to counter a 1-3-1 zone against a Beilein coached team….
kafka said:
December 20th, 2009 at 12:34 am
Balbay’s free throw shooting is a liability at crunch time. That is why Barnes was subbing in Brown on O and Balbay on D at the end. Brown is nearly automatic at the free throw line.

gingerballs, I’m sure it sounds like kind of a lame excuse, but I think the issues you bring up can be attributed partly to this being our first game against competition with a real pulse. We’re still calibrating our lineups and styles, and UNC is obviously a step up in magnitude from our previous opponents. If we see the same kind of performance against MSU, then maybe it’s time to be a little worried.
I’m more inclined to follow your glass-half-full take: happy to see that we’re completely capable of winning an offensive-oriented game against a quality opponent – and that’s with Jordan Hamilton having a pretty craptacular game.
Until then, I think we can probably be as concerned about it as you are about KU’s 1-3-1 performance … i.e., something that’s most likely going to get fixed without too much real heartburn.
As for the “home court” thing … at least going by what was on TV, I couldn’t see any measurable benefit we gained from playing in New Xanadu. It certainly would have been more troublesome in Chapel Hill, and less so in Austin. I would love to have seen what the crowd would have been like in Toyota Center or the AA Center.
Everything still seems on track to our game in February being as epic as expected.

CrazyJoeDavola:
Very good take, I did not mean to say that you guys should be worried about it, more something to think about.
You can’t be too disappointed beating UNC on a “neutral” court by 13. What I was attempting to get at was that your team is talented enough to have won that in a variety of manners, I just think winning 85-72 would have shown me a lot more.
It’s still so early however, I’m sure that game wouldn’t have played out the same in February. There is still no doubt that Texas is my pick as second best team in the nation. The February 8th tilt is still right on track for game of the year.
Trips Right said:

gingerballs, actually, if you read my Carolina preview, you’d see one of my three keys to beating UNC was to push pace and welcome Carolina to play uptempo if they were so inclined. Giving up 48% from the floor is the tradeoff, but it’s better than allowing UNC’s depth at frontcourt to take over the ball game.
Also, i said that Carolina’s perimeter guys would literally be shocked by the Texas backcourt, which they were. Check out Larry Drew’s statline.

North Carolina was 7 of 13 from the 3-pt line. 53.8% For the season they shoot 37.5%. That long range shooting padded the total and kept the game closer than it would have been.

Trips:
Larry Drew’s stat line looks a little better than Balbay’s. Drew had a couple more turnovers than Balbay but also scored more points (albeit on more shots), had 2 more steals, and a couple more rebounds. and 3 more assists.
NC had 16 turnovers vs 13 turnovers for UT, not a big difference. NC hit 36 of 75 shots while UT hit 36 of 87 shots (about 41%). The offensive style actually seemed to suit NC a bit better (which is why they shot 7% better than UT). What won the game for UT (as Roy Williams pointed out) was UT’s rebounding edge (60 to 41!). Dex had an amazing game (including 12 offensive rebounds!) but UT’s fast pace did not help him stay on the court but instead meant that he had to get a rest even more than usual.

I do not think the key was for Balbay to have a better stat line but that Drews game would be disrupted which it was since he could not get into the lane at will.

kafka – Drew’s stat line is nearly self-cancelling:
1 made shot, 3 misses
1 made FT, 1 missed FT
5 assists, 4 turnovers
4 rebounds, 4 fouls.
Only his 3 steals kept his “good vs bad” stats from neutralizing each other. (Kentucky and ‘Cuse did similar things to him.)

“Larry Drew’s stat line looks a little better than Balbay’s.”- kafka
The difference is Balbay’s stat line always looks like that, and Drew’s does not.

gingerballs-
Being a KU guy, you know that Roy Williams forces his tempo like no other. The difference is, this year they don’t have the horses to play that tempo, and we do. I actually think that if we slow the tempo, they stay in the game much easier, and their bigs have a little more say in the game. More possessions, equal more fouls, which makes their bigs play less aggressive. It played right into our hands. just my IMO.

some of you are just basketball illiterate. i don’t give a shit how good balbay can play defense. there will be times in the future that he will be a liability because he can’t shoot a lick….not even a fucking free throw.
he may be the worse shooting guard i’ve ever seen play at the college level.
