College Basketball: Texas vs Texas St. open thread

Posted by Vasherized on December 12th, 2009 under Basketball

Tip off at 3 p.m. CST televised on FSSW.

Got a pot of venison and elk chili simmering and a 4 pack of Guinness pub draught already talking to me.

My manlove for John Wall is approaching unhealthy territory as he diced up Indiana TJ Ford style, finishing with 11 pts / 8 dimes / 6 reb. When he’s not going off for 25 points he’s making sure his teammates do. A one point halftime lead turned into a 20 pt boat race with minimal effort.

La Salle is hanging with Kansas early on and faring well in the paint. The Jayhawks look bored.

The Bobcats (3-6) haven’t beaten the Longhorns since a 33-31 win in Austin on Dec. 7, 1937. The streak ends NOW! Actually, the Bobcats might not surpass that 33 point effort and I feel comfortable predicting Texas will. Look for the freshman to get a lot of minutes as the prep for UNC/MSU continues. One of these guys is due to go off and I’m going with Hamilton.

Any other predictions?

  1. Looks like Kansas woke up. 42-27 at half.

U Dub and G Town are playing a tight game. Huskies PG Quincy Poindexter is a homeless man’s John Wall.

Elk and Venison chili…interesting…when can we come over?

I agree I think Hamilton goes off this game.

  3. Actually, I made it for my dog. I’m having a manwich.

  4. Pondexter is a hybrid forward, Vasherized. Which is ironic because basically every other one of Washington’s notable players is a guard that would fulfill that statement :) Are you thinking of Isaiah Thomas?

  5. If we can slow down Jeff Foster, we have a chance.

  6. Is the game on any TV?

  7. I’m waiting for our epic match up against Texas Pan Am. Our RPI might drop 50 spots just due to the shittyness of that team.

  8. Blake,

Don’t pigeonhole a unique talent like Quincy Poindexter into stereotypes like hybrid forward. His momma told him he can be anything he wants to be.

So I’m going with point guard, like everyone else on the team.

  9. TEXBB,

Not any TV. Only ones with a FSSW signal.

  10. This is sad…. Your dog eats better than I do.

  11. FXSW Pac 10 game running over. Justin TV link?

  12. If Navy doesn’t cover the spread the terrorists have won.

  13. Wow, espn 360 for this! Please don’t be a ruse ESPN.

  14. Game on now, FSN Houston.

  15. Where do you get elk if you don’t know a hunter? I picked up some goat shanks for braising today. I’ve worked my way through just about every offal the cow has to offer, so I’m moving on to other cloven hoof species.

  16. Great f’n ball movement. Really good sign.

  17. They look like a completely different team. Hopefully this sticks.

  18. We’ve got our spread the floor group out there now. Wangmene, Brown, Bradley, Hamilton, and James.

  19. Nice start for Avery. Smooth stroke.

  20. Two selfish shots by Hamilton and Brown. Easy boys.

  21. Johnson sporting the Lucifer goattee. He’s stealing Trips’ look.

  22. Hamilton is our second best rebounder.

  23. Brown is a better player with Balbay on the floor.

  24. Our offensive sets are comical sometimes.

  25. Matt Hill DOMINATING.

  26. Matt Hill is no Vasherized.

  27. HenryJames is third row center. Look for the guy with bleached Girbauds, spray tan, and a faux hawk.

  28. True. I’m more of a Chico Vazquez.

  29. You haven’t lived until a stripper follows your slow footed buddies and jumps in your cab.

  30. Hill could have matched his career high with that free throw.

  31. Matt Hill is a high riser!!!

  32. Or the bunny layup missed point blank. Nice pass from Damion.

You haven’t lived until a stripper follows your slow footed buddies and jumps in your cab.

I see what you did there.

  34. Nobody guards Mason. Outstanding.

  35. Maybe pay her next time?

  36. Brown’s the only guy I trust at the line. He’s going to have to be our “basket man” at the end of games where we’re down or tied.

  37. Great defense by the rim there on Mason.

  38. Vash, that’s just the sober talking.

  39. Balbay’s Turkish scent forced that turnover.

  40. And the scent draws a charge

  41. Let’s hold them to under 20 this half.

  42. Hamilton coast to coast. Needs to finish that.

  43. We play much better up tempo. They don’t have time to worry about what barnes wants them to do.

  44. Love this lineup.

    Dex
    Hamilton
    Johnson
    Bradley
    Brown

  45. We do. And when we play someone that slows tempo, we hit them with Pittman.

  46. Jimmy Fallon on at point guard for the Bobcats.

  47. Horrible shot by Hamilton. Barnes head is fixing to explode.

  48. Hamilton has better touch up close than Tiger.

  49. Redeems himseld with a great hustle board and put back.

  50. Worst 60 seconds of play this season!

  51. Greg Davis is here.

  52. Shawn Williams needs to be getting Justin Mason’s minutes

  53. Did you ask for his autograph?

  54. Wow it looks like the Aggies are only 1 point favorites over New Mexico, I didn’t know NMU was good this year.

  55. 20 pts off turnovers in the first half. Silly.

  56. You know, some guy named ipowers is HUGE on Williams.

  57. Shawn and Mason switching minutes sounds about right to me. Everything else is coming together. Bradley is like an assassin. He’s the perfect guy to run off all the Abrams screens because he doesn’t feel compelled to shoot when he’s not open and hardly ever misses a shot after he warms up, plus nobody seems to feel obligated to guard him.

  58. Mason’s career in a nutshell there. Bad turnover followed up by some great hustle on D.

  59. Wheelhouse game from Damion.

    12 pts / 10 reb
    5-7 FG
dirty work inside getting to the line.

  60. Ha. Jai Lucas is 5′10 150. That’s like half a Scipio.

  61. Jai Lucas looks like AJ Abrams PT II to me, does he add anything beyond that? Do you think he’ll see any serious minutes this season?

  62. Jordan Hamilton looks about 6′5″ in person.

    Kansas hired Gill.

  64. So a foot taller than you?

  65. Oh shit. Brown down.

  66. Which foot does he have a screw in?

  67. Working on Brown’s left ankle. He’s in obvious pain.

  68. Our team FT % just dropped by 10.

  69. They’ve taped a bag of ice to Brown’s ankle, but he’s no longer in pain.

  70. J’Covan used crutches to go to the lockerroom.

  71. HenryJames used to be a male nurse. Listen to him.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one, re: John Wall. I’ve been telling everyone I know who is even a moderate basketball fan to watch Wall’s games.

Part of me really wants us to match up against Kentucky because I think it would be such a fun game. Watching Avery D up on Wall would be perhaps the most interesting thing college basketball could offer up this year.

And part of me doesn’t know if we’d win.

But then another part of me thinks the track meet that would ensue would be worth it either way. I’m really not certain Kentucky wants to try to run with us, Wall or no Wall.

Anyway, Wall is the truth. He is the triple truth, Ruth.

  73. Balbay would be the primary defender on Wall, though you’d see Bradley on switch offs and when Doge is out of the game.

  74. http://barkingcarnival.fantake.com/tag/john-wall/

F these injuries. What is the update?

  75. Rumor is it’s not serious. Just rolled it.

  76. I was at the game and now I know who Brown resembles most. That motherfucker is a right handed van exel. Seriously, next time you watch him get that in your head when watching him. its dead on.

  77. Bartoncreek said:

    December 12th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

I like the Van Exel comparison. I always thought he was a much better scorer off the dribble than a shooter. I’m thinking the same about Brown.

Those guys saying Hamilton was nothing more than a spot up shooter are looking kind of foolish. He sees the court better than anyone on our team and is starting to show an array of moves as he gets more comfortable. Hell, the one thing he didn’t do well today was shoot. I am a lot more comfortable with the ball in his hands than I am with it in Brown’s or Mason’s. I am a little surprised with his weakside rebounding ability. There is nothing this kid can’t do on a basketball court. Just a matter of time with him.

Bradley is also starting to resemble the player I saw last year. I do love his game. I hope he continues to get his confidence up to where it should be. At some point he is going to have to realize that he is just better than almost anyone on the court.

  78. Jordan led the team in assists with 4, with 0 turnovers. He also has 7 rebounds. He only hit 1 of 6 3 point shots but hit half of his 10 2 point attempts. He will probably benefit from a year working with Todd Wright (should help his speed and jumping).

  79. If Jcovan is out for the next game, presumably Mason goes to guard and Jordan and Shawn split the minutes at small forward.

  80. Jordan only took two dumb 3’s. Most were good looks that were near misses.

Easily could have been a 20 pt game. Bradley was in the groove and needs to be more demanding of the ball when he’s feeling it.

  81. Two areas where Bradley needs to improve are free throw shooting (hitting < 50%) and rebounding (1.1 per game). He is 7 for 16 from 3 point land so it is surprising that he is not hitting more of his free throws. For comparison to other horn guards, Brown averages 2.8 rebounds/game and Balbay averages 4.3 reounds/game.

    Barnes’ three “strengths”:

    Defense, rebounding, recruiting.

This team just proved the first two are non-existent (out-rebounded by 25; fucking KIDDING me?) and the last one is over-hyped as well. Every ESPN basketball recruiting analyst who actually had Bradley ahead of Wall should be taken out back and executed Inglourious Basterds style.

a Good System will usually beat a talented team that does not play together and are thinking instead of playing basketball ,over a season the system wins more then they will give away.
A team that is scared to make a mistake and thinks before they react is going to lose to a confident but

I hope your drunk, because Izzo ain’t coming to Texas……Why don’t we just get Coach K. I mean Coach G came from Duke, they have to be dying to get out of Durham….

Egg, that’s fine, but at what point do you blame Barnes? Seriously, man. You’ve thrown players under the bus left and right, but at a certain point, doesn’t the buck stop somewhere. I know you’re more of an NBA guy so it begins and ends with players there, but we need fucking

    Trips,

I hear ya. I’m frustrated as well. I guess I just don’t prescribe to such a black and white characterization of the situation. I do know that no matter what happened in the huddle, JCB made a dumb play. If Rick didn’t explain or remind him of the situation, then I

Pat, know I don’t, but I’ve had coaches draw up plays to free up the best foul shooter and then tell that guy they’d put their foot up his ass if they passed the ball. It’s funny, but as a fans of football we nitpick blitz pickup and shit like that. Shit that’s

Shitty season…..Rick needs to hire some offensive help and someone needs to say it to him. Deloss?

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   4 hours, 53 minutes ago

    Trips,

Do you know that he didn’t? JCB has made bad decision all season, why would this be any different. Barnes coached a shitastic game, but on the teams I was the best FT shooter, I never game up the ball unless it was an uncontested layup…..It’s not hard and it doesn’t take a

  • Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   4 hours, 54 minutes ago

mcpayne, yes, you don’t leave that shit to chance. You don’t let your guys break the huddle or dead ball not knowing precisely what’s expected from them. Barnes doesn’t get 2 mil for coaching PE where he’s hoping the right guy gets fouled.

  • uthookem commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   4 hours, 55 minutes ago

mpayne, I’d agree with you if J’Covan had been playing all season and had been in situations to make that decision. Like, you know, against Baylor, when he played all of 3 fucking minutes thanks to rick.

So yes, it is rick’s fault.

  • Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   4 hours, 56 minutes ago

With 15 seconds left, out of a dead ball, most coaches would make it perfectly clear who they wanted to be fouled.

  • uthookem commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   4 hours, 59 minutes ago

Stupid decisions by Brown are one of the reasons he sat on the bench for most of the season…lack of coaching maybe, or just a lack of basketball IQ?

Oh well, if Brown doesn’t go off in the 2nd half, we aren’t even playing in OT. Too bad he didn’t get much of a chance

  • Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   4 hours, 59 minutes ago

Pat, if you were making 2 million a year, would you leave that up to chance?

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   4 hours, 59 minutes ago

Actually, if your a PG and the best FT shooter on the team and played basketball your entire life, you’d pretty much know not to give up the ball if you had any brains…..Such a dumb play…..

  • D W commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 1 minute ago

Oh, and a stupid decision by Brown in giving up the ball to Johnson.

  • Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 1 minute ago

Be nice if we’d coached our 90 percent foul shooter not to give the ball up.

The line kills us, as it should have.

Fuck Rick Barnes, as this was the worst coaching I have seen in all my years of watching UT sports.

This saved us from Kentucky, but I feel bad for Damo, he was a hell of a Longhorn.

    Hook ‘em!

    And FUCK RICK BARNES!
