SEC, BIG 12 Title Games Ratings Winners

Posted by srr50 on December 7th, 2009 under Football

While Alabama and Texas played their way into the BCS championship game, CBS and ABC celebrated the ratings bonanza that came their way on Saturday.

Texas narrow 13-12 win over Nebraska Saturday night let ABC win the Saturday night ratings battle.

The game drew an over night rating of 7.6 which translated into about 11.5 million viewers. More importantly for ABC, the game dominated the coveted target demo of adults 18-49, drawing in almost twice as many of those viewers as the next network. The ACC Championship game on ESPN Saturday night meanwhile drew a paltry 1.9 rating which translates to about 2.8 million viewers.

Texas win Saturday night over Nebraska is the highest-reated Big 12 Championship game since the 2000 OU-Kansas State matchup.

While the Big 12 gave ABC a Saturday night prime time win, Alabama’s 32-13 over Florida gave CBS the highest-rated regular season college football game in three years. The game pulled an 11.8 overnight rating which translates into more than 19 million viewers. The rating is the highest ever for an SEC championship game.

The Alabama-Florida SEC championship is the highest rated collegiate football game on CBS since the Notre Dame-Miami contest in 1989.

Texas’ thrilling 41-38 win over USC in the 2006 BCS championship game is easily the most watched BCS game ever, pulling a 21.7 rating and over 35 million viewers. No doubt the fact that two of the most recognizable programs will once again be meeting in the Rose Bowl gives the BCS hope that they can come near that record rating this time around.

  1. The huge money that the networks must be raking in (and hence the conferences and schools) must be a big reason that the current system survives instead of a playoff.

  2. The only reason for conference championship games is an extra payday — from tickets and TV.

I wish they weren’t playing Kentucky next. Same goes for #11 seed Washington having to play West Virginia.

Sucks that we are getting the two best teams left in the tourney playing in the Elite 8 possibly.

An already painful week turned excruciating for Carlo Ancelotti. After being dumped out of the Champions League midweek by former hero Jose Mourinho, Chelsea failed to rebound and dropped two valuable points at Blackburn. Manchester United edged Liverpool and now control the Premier League race.

With Leach at the wheel I was expecting a 10 win minimum season with the guys this team has coming back in 2010. Now with Tubbs, Willis, and Brown running the show I’m in agreement it’s anywhere between 9-12 wins this year.

    No Kalin Lucas?

    No problem.

“Too Easy” has had his share of leg and ankle problems this season, and with two minutes left in the Spartans’ second round matchup with Greivis Vasquez and the Maryland Terrapins, he made an early exit.

This really has been a great start. It’s pretty exciting to see dark horse teams winning by playing solid basketball rather than just shooting the lights out. 4 year players are so key.

    gotta,

I think your overall point is a good one. Barnes is a “system” guy especially defensively, which plays into how he overall plays the game. He wants to play a high pressure, overplay man2man scheme predicated on effort, good technique and overall quickness. Similar to Duke, but even Coach K (in fairness
