A Patterson or a Kelly is really what ND needs. Both those guys are already ludicrously successful with third tier linemen and second tier skill position players who they coach up into BCS conference quality. At ND they get second tier linemen and first tier skill position players. They had top 3 recruiting classes for the past four years, albeit mostly because recruiting services overemphasize skill players over linemen.

That's just pretending that ND would keep their current assistant coaches. If a Kelly or a Patterson brings in a big time recruiter who can pull linemen from Texas and/or SEC country ND would be unstoppable. If I were them I'd hire Kelly as HC and Ed Orgeron as DC/recruiting coordinator with a game-oriented assistant DC . Orgeron isn't going to be content to be the junior DC with no on-field responsibilities (because Monte Kiffin runs everything about their defense except recruiting) at Tennessee very long, I promise you.

I think Nate has it right. For ND to have a chance with a Stoops, or a Meyer, they need to approach, hat in hand, make no mention of a need for an interview even as a formality, and let him fill in the dollar amount on the contract. I doubt they do that, and that's why they will have to scramble to get a Patterson or Kelly.

From the Nick Saban to Alabama party:
http://sports.outsidethebeltway.com/2007/01/nick-saban-watch-liveblog/

Dec. 21: Saban: “I guess I have to say it. I’m not going to be the Alabama coach.” & “I don’t control what people say. I don’t control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I’m just telling you there’s no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here.

Dec. 27: Saban: “I’m just making a rule to never comment on something like that again because every time you comment on it, it just makes for another story. So I’m not going to comment on it five years from now, and I’m not going to comment on it next week.”

I'd say Stoopie's denials are no better.

Good post NY Horn. People forget that Pete Carroll had a lot of experience at the college level as an assistant as opposed to other pro coaches who have been hired recently. He knew what it took to have a successful program. The effort and importance of recruiting, dealing with alumni, hiring the right assistants, dealing with college athletes, etc.
