What is it about Maroon that turns us into clowns? / Open Thread

Posted by ChrisApplewhite on November 26th, 2009 under Football

Mark it down, November 25th, 2009, William Muschamp got outcoached.

Yes, there have been mistakes, but A&M is feasting on a steady diet of Brewster, Gideon, and LBs. We aren’t tackling very well, but the reason this game isn’t 28-7 right now is because A&M is working us from the booth.

We are a very good second half team and I will give Muschamp the benefit of the doubt with the short week. However, we need to get our worst coverage guys out of having to cover receivers. We also have to not give up free touchdowns and fumbles. Jerrod Johnson really only has one strength — tremendous accuracy — but if you leave guys wide open he will hit them and look good doing it.

I expect we’ll see some more blitzing to set off the panic center in Johnson’s brain, and less man coverage against 4 WR sets.

On the other hand, I don’t think I’ve ever seen McCoy play better in a half. Maybe Missouri last year. A&M’s defense is the slowest we’ve seen all year but he is on it and you can tell.

———-

Postgame comments:

Well I don’t really believe what I just saw to the point where it’s probably not even worth breaking it down in great detail because we’ll never see that again.

The pass rush was abysmal. Kindle looked slow and confused, like Jone Kines.

Our pass defense made so many mistakes it’s impossible to make a short list. For a defense that relies on reads, switching, and staying on guys, we had way too many wide open WRs running around. Either A&M blew our scheme to pieces or we tried to get cute with the short week. I honestly don’t know and won’t hazard a guess.

A&M has the slowest defense we’ve played in a long time. If Colt McCoy is going for 175, you need to reevaluate things.

Similarly, all it takes to tackle Jerrod Johnson is to build up enough speed to push the air in front of you fast enough to knock him over. He torched us on a couple of draws. Yes, their OL held some but our LBs were invisible. Terrible performance from the front seven.

The silver lining here is that the Gideon debate should be over.

Towards the end of the game it stopped being about us sucking and started turning into a Hollywood movie. I’ll give anyone 5 tries to complete a 17 yards curl between two people on 3rd and 15 and I bet they don’t get a single one. Sometimes you just have to sit back and take it. I’m half surprised Rudy didn’t come out and tackle McCoy on our last drive.

Hard to complain about the offense too much, even though it was only by the Grace of St. McCoy’s legs that we scored at all, but on 4th and a long yard, when your offenses weakness is the OL, whose weakness is physical strength, whose weak point is the center and guard, why sneak it? We were lucky to get that first one, I thought. On the other hand, I liked our aggressiveness. I wish more coaches would take the percentages like we do.

The defense looked beyond slow and I think we should start complaining about an over-watered field.

One last thing that I’ll repeat from the comments: A&M has now outplayed us 4 of 5 years, and we didn’t even look all that great last year. My biggest pet peeve with Mack, behind only the Greg Davis loyalty, is that he never has this team ready for A&M. I can’t explain that, either.

It’s hard to coach defense when you are thinking about your first head coaching job. Wonder if Will spent the past three days on the phone with his agent.

  2. It was a lousy excuse then and it’s a lousy excuse now.

We are locked in a struggle with one of the worst teams in football.

  4. At least the East Coasters will watch the second half…… Colt for Heisman!!! Reparations for Vince!

Easily the worst half of the year by the secondary. They clean it up and we coast. More of the same, and we win only if we don’t turn it over anymore.

Was wondering which one of you guys was going to put up the open thread. I thought I could hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth all the way from Austin.

  7. This is the game that the converts enough of the national media to vote for Colt for the Heisman. Other than that it’s simply another reason to hate Lou Holt.

Oh by the way we need to win the game.

If you need a full yard on 4th and 1, why call a QB sneak? And why oh why do we ever go hurry-up for running plays? It never works. We just gave them fantastic field position.

  9. I’ve had about enough of this shit.

  10. we are fine. Trust me, I’m a doctor.

  11. or Lou Holtz. Dr. Lou as he is known to the great uneducated. I may make it my job to get him off the air. He is a biased, old, drooling piece of crap.

We are going to win this game people. Grab a turkey samitch and enjoy the ride.

  12. Is this what is know as a “running game”?

  13. aggy just gifted us a 2 TD lead, and bailed out Greg from a mind numbingly bad 4th and 1 call.

Also, Fozzy needs to get his ass in the film room and watch Tre Newton get his body north and south. He’s still doing way too much east & west bullshit.

  14. Time for the D to play like they want it. No more brain farts. And Earl needs to be do something.

  15. Horns Up for Deon.

    \m/

  16. what color are Alabama’s uniforms?

  17. Anyone else hope James punches Jesse Palmer?

  18. What the hell, Muschamp.

  19. I’m convinced James would have been an aggy if they could have matched SMUs salary.

  20. Only if Palmer punches him back.

  21. I’m okay with the simultaneous sucker punch.

  22. we cleary aren’t going to get a call the rest of the night. Defense needs to step up.

  23. There’s really not another punter on campus? Really?

We just saw the worst of Greg Davis. The run’s working great so we abandon it.

  25. spit and tears said:

Oh, and we’re gonna trust our D to win this? Bullshit.

Muschamp needs to give back his paycheck this week. Either that, or Duane Akina needs to quit calling the defensive plays. This just looks like 2007 all over again.

  27. ransomstoddard said:

    Absolutely embarassing performance.

  28. Why is Davis abandoning the run game two series after we ran it down their throats?

Also, please remove Goodwin from the KO return unit. He’s a terrible fit.

  29. Why do we insist on having our LBs nowhere in the middle of the field?

  30. is arron wiliams playing?

  31. I think someone is impersonating Muck or he’s got money on the game.

This is the worst I’ve seen him play.

  32. Fucking awful.

  33. What the hell are we doing out there?

  34. Our D is completely out of sorts.

  35. What is it about these fuckheads? Jesus.

  36. What the devil is going on? And, is Will entertaining a head coaching offer, or, was that a joke?

  37. Seriously. Our offense needs to take over and score a TD here.

and WHY is our D playing so weird right now?

  38. spit and tears said:

    November 26th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

I knew there would come a point this season where the wheels on defense would fall off. Every good defense has a clunker sooner or later. This clearly is it. I don’t expect aggy to punt tonight. We need probably a couple more TDs, at least. This one is on the offense at this point, because clearly the D will not help us.

    KIRKENDOLL IS MONEY

  44. Can we lay off Kirkendoll for a game or two?

  45. So this has turned into a battle between a confused secondary and a slow one.

I have hope that we can unconfuse our secondary and I’m pretty sure their’s won’t get faster.

    Gil

  46. Wow. Texas fucking shootout.

Will better whip those kids into a damn frenzy and get them to nut up.

  47. Might be Kirk’s best play ever. It always feels like we get tackled there short of the marker aqnd instead Kirk takes it for the TD.

  48. if texas wins, colt wins heisman. he is zoned in.

  49. This rollercoaster is making me queezy.

  50. Woody Bombay said:

    November 26th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

holdem, I am the only guy around here who likes Kirkendoll. I am being completely serious.

  51. nutting does not help concentration

  52. I take back all the mean thoughts.

  53. Come on, D. It’s time to step up and play like one of the top defenses in the country.

  54. One stop and the game is over.

  55. What the hell is Sergio doing, trying to get in the way?

  56. is vince wearing maroon?

  57. apparently the defense really needs 7 days between games.

  58. We don’t have ANYONE in the middle of the field. I feel like we have 6 guys to their 11.

  59. Wow. Craig James should be a little less transparent about his biases. He clearly moved. I called it as it happened.

  60. always recruit guys with girls names. they have been hazed their entire life and are pissed off.

  61. i hate blake gideon

  62. This is the most inexplicable thing I have ever seen. This is Mackovic awful.

  63. Woody Bombay said:

I don’t know what was going on earlier in the game, but at this point the defense is fucking gassed.

  64. Here is a fun sentence to type: A&M has outplayed Texas now 4 out of 5 years.

  65. What the fuck was Early playing on that pass? My first though was pick, my second was a kill shot. He just gave up.

    WTF?!?!?

  66. Unbelievable. A complete and total defensive collapse.

  67. It’s like we’re playing d with a bunch of junior high kids.

  68. i can’t believe how soft our secondary has been tonight. this is just blowing my mind.

  69. Is there any doubt we’re going three and out here?

  70. and they need to watch for the on-side.

and HOW are we not getting more pressure on johnson? seriously.

  71. Defense has a different alignment, doesn’t it? And, Aaron Williams is playing with a heavily very wrapped knee. Have we realigned coverage assignments to protect Aaron because he is less mobile?

  72. CA.

Please. Don’t say that. Have some faith. McCoy can do this.

  73. “and HOW are we not getting more pressure on johnson? seriously.”

We’re bringing three A LOT. And we have NO LBs at all.

  74. They take angles like they have never seen a grass surface.

  75. The next time we get the ball, I mean . . .

  76. Hobida shibida!

  77. World Class Y’all!

  78. YES YES YES!!!!

    HELL YEAH!

  79. That’s one way to answer.

  80. Yeah, I’m an idiot. Clearly Goodwin should be out there.

    FUCK YEAH!!!!

  81. LOL! You have to almost feel sorry for the Aggies.

Damn, rich, I wanted to remind you of your earlier comment. In the time it took me to find it you got way ahead of me. Good work!

  83. I’ll obviously take the points, but that does nothing to help our D. Look for ATM to score in about 2-3 minutes here.

Ha, Earl Thomas’ hopes for thorpe might have gone out the window, but UT is still winning this game. Hell of a return. It must be nice to have a stable of athletes like that…

  85. No. No you don’t. There is still too much time left on that clock. I want the ball back. NOW.

  86. “You have to almost feel sorry for the Aggies.”

    You’re an idiot.

Uh, yeah, I don’t feel sorry for the aggies at all. They are making my Thanksgiving evening tense and uncomfortable.

  88. So do we starting blitzing? Do we not? Are we trying to make a play or just hold onto our asses and make them burn clock?

Make or break defensive series here. Every champion has this game and deals with it. This is our test.

  89. Bobby_Batronic said:

This is the most G** dam**d ridiculous game I’ve seen us play in every respect. We’ve got some very tired legs on defense. Not to mentioned dinged up. The angles we’re taking and the lack of tackling says tired all over it.

  90. Wow.

  91. Woody Bombay said:

  92. Our kick off teams are full of morons.

  93. God damnit Kenny!

  94. Idiot.

  95. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!?!?!?!!!!?!

  96. Maybe they watered the field. Swope just blew by Curtis Brown.

  97. When was the last time the D lined up and didn’t look completely lost?

  98. Jesus Christ.

  100. Woody Bombay said:

And they’re talking about Swope like he’s fucking Gayle Sayers. This guy is terrible and is making our coverage guys look foolish.

  101. Big 3rd and 9. Can we hold them to 15 yards here? Can they complete a curl with 4 guys on a receiver, or should we risk it with 3?

  102. Vaccaro is gonna keep us in the running for the Fulmer Cup.

  103. Unreal.

  104. SHIT. Can we get a PICK?

  105. You gotta be kidding me.

  106. we’re bringing THREE on third and longs and JJ still converts.

  110. wow. hold much?

  111. So Acho turns to chase a QB behind him, but can’t get off the OL? Probably not holding, then.

  112. 3rd and 14. I’m actually a little excited to see how A&M pulls this off.

  113. Um, thanks?

  118. As for Lamar, I bet he’s cramping up and/or completely gassed.

  119. lamaaaar~1

  120. This is quickly turning into an “entire wheel of cheese” game. I’m not even mad, just impressed. This is the most prefect anybody has played against us since OU 2000. On offense anyway.

  121. ooooohhh good. looks like he just got the wind knocked out of him.

  122. LOL

  123. HO-LEE SHIT!

  124. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahah

  125. wow. now our o needs to run down that clock

  126. Fuck yes, Greg. Don’t go into a total shell. Keep them guessing here.

    Nice call!

  130. good job, O. yes!

  131. Prepare for the the Aggie Moral Victory. (TM)

  132. penis

  133. man. this is the first game that we’ve relied on our offense rather than D.

  134. pla·teau (pl-t)
    n. pl. pla·teaus or pla·teaux (-tz)
    1. An elevated, comparatively level expanse of land; a tableland.
    2. A relatively stable level, period, or state: Mortgage rates declined, then reached a plateau.
    intr.v. pla·teaued, pla·teau·ing, pla·teaus
To reach a stable level; level off: “The tension seemed to grow by degrees, then it plateaued”

For the offseason, Aggie friends. Don’t get ahead of yourselves.

  135. I need a shower to wash off all this fail.

  136. Its a fucking win, holy shit, i almost forgot how great a close win is. That kick return was greatness.

  137. Look, we won. They played out of their minds on offense. They made plays tonight they haven’t made all year. I’d rather the D crap the bed in a win than have them do it in the title games.

Will’s going to coach those kids like mangy mutts all week and they’ll be back to kicking ass in the title game.

Plus, Colt won some Heisman votes tonight.

Huge props to Greg, Colt, and the entire Longhorn offense for showing up huge.

  138. Aggy played completely outside themselves. Good for them if Sherman can keep it together and they’re back to being ranked, their status of suckteam really kills our SoS.

  139. CS is hard to play in. And that was the first time some of our secondary guys have played there.

  140. Yes, there have been mistakes, but A&M is feasting on a steady diet of Brewster, Gideon, and LBs.

Utterly predictable for this site that when the whole defense plays like absolute shit that the white guys get singled out.

  141. Sergio looked like a big pile of worthless out there, too. Johnson ain’t exactly VY.

  142. The D gets no shelter. They played really bad. Awful. Terrible.

But, we got away with it. And they will come out of it for the better. They are going to hear nothing but how bad they sucked for the next 10 days.

You learn more from your mistakes than your successes.

  143. “Utterly predictable for this site that when the whole defense plays like absolute shit that the white guys get singled out.”

    BC = full of racism.

Oh yeah, except for the part about the LB’s. Those guys are all pretty non-white.

It was a fair comment. Aggy decimated the middle of our D. They clearly came into the game with a solid plan that attacked their perceived weakness of our D.

    Get over it.

  144. Long week for Muschamp to prepare for Nebraska, they’ll look much better by then.

    Hope Beasley’s ok.

It was even worse in person. Gideon and Brewster are embarrasments. As were our schemes which put linebackers on Fuller and Tanyehill. But ATM played a great game. They really did.

It was embarrassing for our defense. And I’m not sure there is much we can do about it.

  152. CTJ is our Branding Iron. He could predict the sun will come out tomorrow and we’d all die a dark, frozen death the next day.

You knew we wouldn’t get any calls in Hooterville. Still, at the end of this, Johnson just played one of the most uncanny games I have ever seen. At some point you just have to say that the guy was on fire. Why the hell do aggy QBs turn into Joe Montana against us at Dead Dog Memorial Stadium?

  154. ghostofagroundgame said:

Kindle wasn’t rushing hard bc he wasn’t supposed to. We were playing contain on JJ. But he broke contain and made plays all night.

All that to the side. Colt WAS A HUGE MAN TONIGHT!!!! HUGE. Great for him to have a game like that.

  155. Is anyone else just laughing and just enjoying the win. I am.

  156. Colt played like VY inspired him running all over the Texans sunday.

  157. “Is anyone else just laughing and just enjoying the win. I am.”

Not laughing, but certainly not mad. Happy as shit to get out of there with a win.

  158. ghostofagroundgame, we can do something about it. Get gideon and brewster of the field and play Scott; Fuck, play Vaccaro, i’ll take the Personal fouls.

  159. We can hide/protect Blake, but we can’t put Blake and Brewster on the field together against a team with real athletes.

That said, Scott is not the answer. I’ve got an equal shot at getting secondary snaps in the national title game as that kid.

He’ll get run on the kick off coverage team, where he’s desperately needed.

  160. Zipping through the game on the DVR it just looks like the entire defense was tired. They missed tackles they never miss and looked like they were taking lazy angles all night. That was just an off game and a really good game for Jerrod.

Someone on this site said the only way we lose this game is if both units come out unprepared. I was fully expecting one of them to but I would have bet the house it would have been the offense.

I guess Davis (or Colt) returned the favor to the defense for the OU game.

  161. that was an entertaining game, but to get to sleep I’m pouring my self a tall glass of vodka. Great to see our O carry the day and NOT play down to the competition for a change. Retardation from GD was limited — admittedly the bar is quite low (QB sneak on long 4th and a long 1, dropping the running game for a bit)

NOt what I wanted, but glad that the coaching staff has this as an opportunity to demand intensity and focus.

BTW – we haven’t been rotating defensive players nearly as much this year as in the past have we? definitely could use some depth for fresh legs if we make it to the nat’l champ game. especially against teams that can run the ball. that D was GASSED in the second half. Chris Applewhite could have scored against them (rimshot).

  162. ghostofagroundgame said:

There aren’t a lot of options, is my point. We has Earl Thomas playing CB some tonight, which is why Brewster was on the field. But we have to come up with something.

  163. JJ and his receivers played an almost-perfect game against us, but that was the first QB like him we’ve played this season (thanks to RGIII being out for the Baylor game).

Last I checked, Nebraska and Alabama don’t have anyone on their roster like Jerrod Johnson. (Maybe Cody Green will get there someday, but not now, from the few snaps I’ve seen of him this season). As for Florida … well, if this is how we’re going to play against mobile QBs, I’m gonna pull like hell for ‘Bama vs. UF.

  164. The guys on 590 just compared Colt to WIllie Gault, when talking about how slow A&M’s defense is.

  165. This is eerily similar to the A&M game in 2005.I am putting 200 on Texas to win the Crystal ball.
I am going to regret it tomorrow.

  166. magnusbleuveigner said:

    November 26th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

I just read all this and realize we all think similar. One thing left off of the comments is that this was the last passing team we’re going to play this year. We’ll be alright. We regressed to the mean a little tonight. Offense looked very good. Why have we not passed downfield or run Colt more often? Aw fuck it, let’s just take it and run with it. It was ugly as fuck, but who cares, it’s getting late and I’ve been drinking all day, I’ll take it.

  167. If Colt plays like this next week, and bama vs florida becomes a battle of defenses, he will have a good chance at the heisman.

  168. 98 nailed it. A game A&M should’ve won that we pulled out thanks to a couple big special teams plays.

  169. That Texas offense won’t break 20 on Alabama’s or UF’s defense.

With no threat to run and up against the dominant DLs and shutdown corners that both teams have, it will look a lot like last year’s MNC game.

  170. Despite the return, our kickoff special teams suck out loud. We have systemic problems on kickoffs, we lose lane gaps, we don’t wrap, and keeping A&M inside the 35 yard line brought a cheer from the crowd where I was.

  171. What a crock of shit. SEC offenses are awful.

  172. What a bunch of pantywaists. It was an imperfect, ugly at times 10-point win over a bunch of guys whose sole purpose for living is to beat Texas. Muschamp has 10 days before Nebraska. He’ll figure it out.

  173. If Chykie doesn’t release Fuller on that 70 yard TD bomb on the first possession and that pass is incomplete and they punt, how much does this game change?

  174. On this greatest holiday of all holidays, I am thankful I am not an Aggie.

    Texas Fight!

  175. Agreed srr50. We gave them a 50 yard field to work with all night. We might be able to scrape out a win against atm or Nebraska but that won’t fly against Bama or Florida. I can’t believe we can’t put the fucking ball into the endzone on kickoffs.

Defense will have their shit together by the time we play Nebraska and we won’t see another offense with anything close to the power the Ags showed tonight. I don’t like saying it, but they played fucking unreal. Our D played like crap.

Nebraska will be a good test for our offense before the NC. Colt was sick, Malcolm is a man, and Kirkendoll. I don’t know wtf happened to Kirk but his last two games have been impressive. Nebraska’s O is the equivalent of our kick coverage.

  176. Looking at championship seasons that Texas and other programs have had in the past, there is always at least one game where they squeak by in a way that leaves you wondering WTF? This was that game for us and we survived it.

I agree with those that say Muschamp will be all over the defense between now and a week from Saturday. Our players on D have some pride and leadership too and should be very hungry to hammer some people from here on out.

Defense has carried us all year. Tonight the offense and Goodwin’s return bailed us out. It is a team game.

    Onward.

Sherman said in the paper today that aggy’s been spending time the last three weeks preparing and gameplanning for Texas. It showed.

Despite CTJ’s belittling, tonight aggy showed–again–why there was good reason for concern in this game. They play 4x above their heads against us. You can throw out everything you see from them all year because, when they play us, it’s a completely different team.

And they’re going to want the game about a thousand times worse than us.

All that having been said, Colt should be the Heisman frontrunner at this point. He won’t be, but he should be. Ingram has done nothing all year like what Colt’s done in the last two games.

His performance tonight was positively Tebowesque. And by Tebow, I mean Vince Young.

He had damn near 500 yards of offense and 5 touchdows. Give me a break if I’m more impressed by that than another 120 yard rushing game from Ingram.

I hope every single Heisman voter was watching tonight.

    Poor aggy.

Anyone think the short week may have hampered the defense? And I’m not just talking about prep time. I think maybe they got gassed a little early in this game. The short recovery time, combined with chasing J Johnson around and fighting through grabby o-lineman, may have just worn them out. The short fields didn’t help, either.

Of course, that wouldn’t account for the 70 yard TD on the Aggies’ first possession.

  181. I was listening to Craig Way when the bomb to Fuller happened and he said he was all alone and I immediately knew who was covering him. Aaron Williams, get well soon. He was not right today but glad he was able to play at all.

Homesick, let’s just go ahead and add Colt’s punt to that total to put him over 500. Hell, if Tebow punts and pins his opponent inside the 10, it may run on a constant loop on ESPN.

  183. Tre looked good when his number was called, and Colt was amazing. We are going to miss him next year. Malcolm came through in a big way, as did Kirk. Shipley was Shipley. It’s hard to believe that Colt was sick given his play.

Johnson’s stats were 26-33, with one interception. That’s unconscious. I suspect our defense will look much better in Dallas, but I don’t have much confidence that kick off coverage will experience the same transformation.

Feel very fortunate to get out with a W tonight!

  184. Any video links for a post-game Muschamp interview? I’m curious what he says about the defense tonight.

It is not Maroon. It is CTJ’s damn “Why Texas Stomps a Mud Hole in ( insert team here )’s Ass” … clearly. Remember last years’ version prior to TT game complete with clown car reference! CTJ: I guess you going to have switch one of those gay ass anti-jinx posts instead. On second thought, forget all that I just said. I loved the post and last years too!

  186. Whether our defense does better or not in the future, I no longer consider Muschamp to be a genius defensive coordinator standing alone at the pinnacle of coaching expertise. He can be every bit as bad as freaking Akina.

The D looked dead-legged from the get go. The three days and playing on the road had something to do with how they played. I don’t know if it’s what kept us from blitzing, but we were not breaking on the ball or tackling like we have been and they held like a motherf****er all night and it wasn’t called.

Our offense, having finally discovered the top secret identity of Malcolm Williams, having bitch slapped Kirk back to the guy he was lasy year (only better) and having Tre out there and, OBTW, turning Colt loose to run a real zone read and to run in general gives me cause for great optimism.

Out D will benefit from the extra days off and hopefully AW will be at full speed in Dallas. Tonight will make sure we don’t go up there flat, that’s for sure!

What we have absolutely got to fix is our shtty punting and punt and kickoff coverage. It is the biggest weakness we have and could cost us the whole enchilada.

Overall, I’m happy as hell to get to this point 12-0 and getting a chance to reclaim what Colt (Heisman) and the team (MNC) were fucked out of last year..

  188. Fuck you utexex..Did you even see one dropped ball for A&M? Did you see one holding called? How many catches did you see over double coverage for A&M( i saw 3-4)? We have played a full Big 12 schedule giving up a max of 20 points over the last 7-8 weeks. A letdown is bound to happen. What could have Muschamp down? Blitz the corner every down? JJ was playing at peak efficiency. The Defense missed tackles because of bad angles; things we didn’t see the whole year. Couldn’t it be because of three days of rest? You moron.

    Sorry for over reacting.

I keep seeing people gripe that we can’t kick the ball into the end zone.

A&M didn’t kick it into the end zone, and aside from one play, they were just fine on coverage. Contrary to popular belief, most teams, in fact, either won’t or can’t kick it to the end zone with any regularity.

The problem is NOT that we kick to the 5 or 10. It’s that we have a bunch of undisciplined and/or non-physical guys on the cover team.

How ironic that Deon Beasley, of all people, got hurt while flinging his body into a play on KO coverage. Pretty thankful he looked to be OK.

  191. have to agree with charlie, who gives a damn if Aggie “outplayed us 4 out of 5 years”. Where have they been the rest of the season all those years? They’ve been making us their Super Bowl and hoping to make a bowl game. Screw them, and screw the type of season you have to have to do that. UT on the other hand, gets to go to practice and get ready to play for a spot in the MNC game. They played the game of their season……………….again, and still lost by two scores.

We played horrible defense. They played great offense. Our specials teams was goat-f@cking awful. We were outschemed and outcoached in many aspects of the game. And we won a rivalry game, on the road, by 10.

Chykie is still Chykie, which means he gets smoked deep a couple of times. Shipley continued to be a complet f@ck up on punt receptions. We still start the least athletic players on the team on kickoff coverage. We ran the worst fake punt play I have ever seen in the least deceptive way possible. But we had 600 yards offense and Colt played out of his mind. I don’t know if any of our problems can be fixed, but I’m glad we won.

Crazy – Kicking it in to the end zone and taking 20 yards on a touch back is preferable to having our D start every fucking possession with their asses hanging over the 50. A&M didn’t kick it into the end zone and Goodwin ran it back down their throats. Same as Briscoe did to us last week. Unless you have a fix for atrocious kick coverage then we need a kicker that can send it out of the back of the end zone to limit opponents to 20 yards instead of 50 or touchdowns.

I neglected to DVR this contest so I thankfully won’t be going throw our defensive series and trying to see who was at fault the most but there was plenty of blame to go around. We didn’t keep our responsibilities on run or the pass and we tackled like shit, AS A TEAM. Better we got this out of our system today than against Neb or in our bowl game.

There’s usually at least one game where the offense stinks (OU game fills the bill) and one game where the defense stinks (this one, much to our surprise and chagrin). Special teams have bad plays scattered through the season, but rarely uniformly awful games (1999 NC State was such a game). This is true for virtually every team that has ever played the game. If one unit sucks, someone has to take up the slack. If they don’t, losses happen. The offense bailed us out tonight, but ultimately the game turned on two special teams plays: our KOR for a TD and A&M’s missed FG.

As for our defensive gameplan: was it part of some Super Double Secret Master Plan to get Colt the Heisman? It might well work.

Actually, though, Muschamp himself had a what-the-fuck-was-that look on his face several times tonight. I think he was as surprised as anybody by our defensive ineptitude.

A whale of a game this was! I would be more comfortable with a blowout, but a win is quite nice enough.

  197. There are many tractor hicks who love A&M because probably those persons had a bad father. I’m guessing. Nobody knows, because they get hard on threshers, dogs and possibly also cotton gins out in the thick haze of wherever some dude in the late 20’s (visionary of the strip mall! and probably a communist.) got some farm credits and built that ’stadium of the future’. It’s a generational daisy chain is what I’m saying.

  198. I also just got home and I’m drunk and type-y. So maybe strike that thing. Or don’t. It’s cool, whatever.

Right now I miss Midnight Tacos.

  199. You have to laugh at the absurdity of our scheme against the 5 wide. E. Acho bracketing Jeff Fuller in zone before handing him off to Nolan Brewster. Blake Gideon playing man on Tanerhill. Muckelroy running over the middle with Morrow.

Good news: Our next two games will be against teams that have a medical condition preventing them from completing a forward pass. I would have to check the roster but I am pretty sure Nebraska does not have 5 wide receivers on scholarship.

  200. A wise man once told me atm meant ass to mouth. I think the D was thinking about that atm last night.

  201. Well, I guess Muschamp and Ruffin have something in common on their resumes now.

  202. Also, you’ve all turned into a bunch sissies. I don’t think Florida or Bama will have as good a skill players across the board as A&M. This matchup will be valuable for January.

And now we get the expected “aggy is a pretty good team and may be better than Florida or Bama” posts. Seriously? I will repeat: aggy is a terrible terrible football team. They deserved to win last nite over a poorly prepared, uninspired and tired Texas team. They exposed us for what we are: a pretty good but not great team that without Colt, loses this game by forty points. Moreover, it makes me cringe to think about how many yards Ingram would get against this defense. I’m saying north of 200. We have been exposed.

Now I look forward to all the posts that try to explain why the Huskers are not foaming at the mouth to get at this team. And, whoever has bought off Akina did a great job.

  204. I don’t think that’s what I said, ransom. I said it help in preparation for those teams because the Aggies have better offensive skill players across the board. Johnson/Tebow similar. Michael/Gray>Moody/Demps. Fuller/Uzi/Tannehill/McCoy>anything FL/AL will be fielding across the board. Now, I don’t have any real good answers for you on Ingram and the Bama guards. I would personally like to kick you in the teeth for complaining about being an underdog in the MNC.

A&M opened up the run with the pass. NU can’t do that. A&M has a mobile qb that added significant rushing yards. NU can’t do that.

What’s important is that our offense is clicking at the right time. Our D looked tired and out coached. Also, Earl took some horrible angles last night. This can be corrected.

Ransom, this same game could have been played for the national championship and you’d still be crying and bitching….

How the fuck is Mark Ingram going to run for 100 yards against us if they can’t fucking pass?

  206. hopefulhorn said:

Well stated, ded. aggy’s strength is young skill position talent that is superior to anything we will see in the next two games. They were pulling plays out of their asses at home in front of their usual insane crowd.

NU, Bama and Florida have won with defense all year. Both games will be played on neutral fields with plenty of prep and rest between.

No bitching here–I’ll take the win under adverse circumstances.

  207. ransom, you are a miserable fuck. No two ways about that.

Yeah, they had a great night against us on offense. They have been Jeckyl and Hyde all year, and you always expect to get their absolute best at Kyle Field.

That said, we bent their defense over repeatedly, and we never trailed in the 2nd half. Twice they closed it to 3, and we answered with a 5 play, 80 yard drive and a 92 yard KO return for a score.

That’s showing heart. Win and advance. That is all that matters. One bad night against a pretty decent ATM offense does not negate a season’s worth of defensive dominance.

  208. rickvigorous said:

    November 27th, 2009 at 7:50 am

Shit Ransom, your post’s inane pessimism is getting difficult to read. Ingram goes for 200+? Genius analysis. Our not-Vince-Young-quarterback went for 170+. TAMU averages 30+ points per game=better than average offense. Did you watch the game? Johnson was out of his mind.

What this really gets into is what your qualifications for “great team” and “pretty good team” are. I think we have different views about it. Undefeated regular seasons in a BCS conference qualify as great to me. The ability to beat any other team in the country=great. Is there any team in the country you really don’t think this Texas team is capable of beating?

And, btw, it’s silly to reference what the game would be like w/o Colt. He is the leading reason why, for me, this team is great and not just pretty good.

  209. For some inexplicable reason, the NY Times is still allowing Thayer Evans to cover Texas football:

Looking ahead, our schedule for 2010 currently has us playing Tech on the road before the A&M game. If our defense was gassed on a short week after beating Kansas by 31, I shudder to think what it’ll look like on three days’ rest after playing in Lubbock.

Maybe we should take Tech up on that offer to move the game to September. Or refuse to play the Aggies on Thanksgiving night.

  211. ransom, dude, chill out. For all the teeth-gnashing and hand-wringing, plenty of both from me, we were never going to lose that game last night. Most importantly, Colt had to go win us a game in the 4th quarter on a big drive and he DID. That’s football. We won the game. We were never going to lose it by 40. You’re a little out of your mind right now.

Our team is never up for the A&M game. It is frustrating to watch because they treat it like the Super Bowl. We came out completely flat last night, and that first series bomb really set the tone. I don’t know whether Chykie was supposed to stay man on Fuller (which would be retarded) or whether there was supposed to be safety help that never showed, but that was inexcusable. If you watch the second half, however, you’ll see that they were making catches in double and triple coverage, on ridiculous throws. There is only so much you can do when a team makes plays like that.

We played a streaky young offense that got hot, and we came out flat and played flat all night. Couple that with some bad match-up coverage — our linebackers ended up 15 – 20 yards deep covering Tanneyhill way too often — and some bizarre personnel decisions — that’s right bigduke, Gideon and Brewster are not fast enough to be at the safety positions at the same time, not to mention making your all-world safety play nickel back — meant that we never put them away. But our bad klick-off return penalties (and don’t be fooled — they did get EVERY call and hit Colt pretty late quite a few times) and inability to move the ball in the late 3rd and early 4th quarter kept putting the D in terrible positions. And someone finally made us pay for it — our offense and special teams have been gicing the other team short fields all year, we’ve just gotten away from it.

We have a lot of work to do and I hope Muschamp is as embarrased as I was sitting there surrounded by aggys. But we won. Fairly comfortably. We just didn’t look as great as I would haver liked. I’d rather win ugly than lose pretty.

  212. Jan 8th 2010 ransom’s post will look something like this :

Without Colt you guys would have lost by 40, if Tebow had played a better game they would have killed you, that is the worst national champion team I have ever seen, they are so overrated… just wait till next year when you all lose 12 games …. Texas might have gone 14-0 but that doesn’t mean anything … They better hope they don’t play TCU cause they would kick that ass…

Problem is Travis, Ransom is a UT fan. Crazy ain’t it?

  214. How can anyone be that miserable …

  215. I don’t see a reference to it, which is perplexing. On the touchdown pass to start the game, on 3rd and long Muschamp blitzed Gideon. Chykie obviously is expecting safety help, but doesn’t have it, because Gideon is rushing the passer.

I can’t imagine that Gideon was going Sarah Palin and rushing the passer on his own initiative, so the easy conclusion to make is Chykie Brown fucked up.

  216. Chykie make a mental error? That’s unpossible!

  217. I can’t believe you guys are trying to pin this on Chykie!

Good to see so much blind optimism on here. I also hope like hell last night was merely, as many posts state, a product of: a. aggy being hyped up for us [query: why dont we ever get hyped up for them?] b. a few random mistakes [query: should we be making this many errors this late in the season? even the dumbass announcers repeatedly noted how our defense was confused] c. a superduper aggy team that is incredi, bly skilled, especially on offense [query: if true, then how did ou hold them to 10 points, arky to 19 and ksu to 14?].

Sorry not to be a sunshine pumper but we were outplayed last night by a really bad football team. Bury your heads if you want. I prefer realism.

  219. SL, there was a quote in the statesman by Will where he took the blame on the busted coverage. He said they changed what they normally did with that blitz, and he should have known better than to make that sort of change on a short week.

My guess is that Earl typically blitzes and we leave Gideon with help over the top.

Chykie still has to own up to knowing the play, but it explains it to a degree.

ransom, there are three phases to a football game. They may have out played our defense, but we outplayed theirs to a larger degree, won the turnover battle, and were the queen of the pigs on special teams. (thanks to the combo of Goodwin and their shitty kicker)

We were not completely outplayed, and to suggest as much shows just how miserable of a person you are.

  220. “Sorry not to be a sunshine pumper but we were outplayed last night by a really bad football team. Bury your heads if you want. I prefer realism.”

“Realism” = 49-39, and 12-0. Most of the rest of it is mere opinion, backed, to one degree or another, by facts (some objectively presented, others selectively chosen).

  221. it wasn’t pretty, and it may not have been as much pure fun as the kind of stomping we all know aggies deserve… but it was a win. A lot like the one in ‘05. We played our worst game on defense, and one of our worst on special teams – with the one very, very notable exception.

And we played a team with talent. Sure, they may be, as per ransom a “really bad football team”, but they are not a team without talent. They are certainly inconsistent, but we got their best game – Johnson was just unconscious, I don’t think we’ve had a QB play that well against us since Leinart’s second half in Jan ‘06. We can complain about our defense, and rightfully so, but let’s do give a little credit, Johnson made a lot of great throws all night, and the receivers made a lot of great catches in traffic. They probably played about 4 miles over their heads, but they did it, and they deserve some kudos.

And… let’s not forget this, we beat them. On a night we couldn’t cover kickoffs as well as we did vs. Michigan in the ‘05 Rose Bowl, and when our faith in Muschamp’s defense for the first time seemed misplaced, our much-maligned offense came to the rescue. We’ll get to wail and gnash our teeth for a while, and moan like ransomstoddard about how Bama and Florida are just about to find their ‘07 Patriots offense to go along with their ‘86 Bears defenses, but how it won’t matter since we probably can’t even beat that Huskers juggernaut… but hey, when all the talking and crying and finger-pointing are done – we’re still standing!

I still get enraged thinking about last year’s raw deal. Because that team deserved better. They were one of my favorite teams ever, mostly because they were just so freakin’ resilient. Fall behind by 11 to OU, without a TE – no problem. Go through the first half at Tech, down by 19 on Halloween night with an insane crowd yowling for their blood – they came back, and came within a freshman’s dropped INT of winning. They just had no quit in them.

One good thing about last night’s game is that I think there’s some of that in this team too…

With 15 seconds left, out of a dead ball, most coaches would make it perfectly clear who they wanted to be fouled.

Stupid decisions by Brown are one of the reasons he sat on the bench for most of the season…lack of coaching maybe, or just a lack of basketball IQ?

Oh well, if Brown doesn’t go off in the 2nd half, we aren’t even playing in OT. Too bad he didn’t get much of a chance

Pat, if you were making 2 million a year, would you leave that up to chance?

Actually, if your a PG and the best FT shooter on the team and played basketball your entire life, you’d pretty much know not to give up the ball if you had any brains…..Such a dumb play…..

Oh, and a stupid decision by Brown in giving up the ball to Johnson.

  • Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 1 minute ago

Be nice if we’d coached our 90 percent foul shooter not to give the ball up.

    Ransom,

1 for 2, that was not shitty defense……

Well if you had read it all the way, you would’ve noticed this little tidbit:

In the second part I’ll do my best to give an outline of what exactly is wrong with the program, what we can do to fix it, and then what will probably happen TO fix it.

The line kills us, as it should have.

Fuck Rick Barnes, as this was the worst coaching I have seen in all my years of watching UT sports.

This saved us from Kentucky, but I feel bad for Damo, he was a hell of a Longhorn.

    Hook ‘em!

    And FUCK RICK BARNES!

Feel bad for Damion…..Dexter and Mason, not so much….

  • D W commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 2 minutes ago

So the season ends with missed free throws and shitty defense by Bradley. Pretty fitting.

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 2 minutes ago

Yup……We knew that FTs would get us….

    F’n Gary’s been awful tonight….

  • uthookem commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 4 minutes ago

GJ at the line…big heart needed!

  • Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 4 minutes ago

Why does Brown give it up there?

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   5 hours, 4 minutes ago

Bilas explaining why we’re not a smart team…Oh good, I want Gary at the line…

The good news is that now I know to fill out the census, so i’m not going to jail…not for that anyway.
