Texas wins the 1987 Bluebonnet Bowl.
Then Curtis Martin runs for like 300 yards on one of Mackovic’s defenses.
So tonight’s game is about bragging rights in a totally different sport.

He wants to play a high pressure, overplay man2man scheme predicated on effort, good technique and overall quickness. Similar to Duke, but even Coach K (in fairness

When you trade continuity for waves of pressure defense, you can never afford to have 4 role players on the floor with J’Covan Brown for significant stretches. You simply can’t. - refs struggled
- FTs were bad

- Hamilton needs more minutes
- Bradley needs to be more assertive
- injuries might actually be a blessing in disguise for this team (hope Ward is ok though)
- good to see that foul trouble won’t be that big of an issue for this team, too much depth

Bring Balbay, Johnson, Wen,Williams off the bench. Mason’s defense and energy overrated.

I am talking about the end of the 1st half and beginning of 2nd up until the point where Pitt’s McGhee got fouled and had an and 1 to tie the game at 51. It was a real weak give up foul. From that point on, we were intense on both ends of the floor and dominated. We need to be like that all the time, fatigue is not a factor.
Balbay is legit, a lot of my aggie and sooner friends talk a lot of shit about him.

Looking at the stat sheet a few things jump out.
- Pittman had 1 rebound
- We’ve played four games. In three of those games we’ve had FIVE guys score in double figures. In the fourth game we had FOUR players, with one more guy at 9pts.
- Balbay had 10 pts, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 1 turnover

The team has known for some time that playing time will come on a day to day basis. With the depth we have, it is exactly what most of us on here have talked about leading up to the season. I want to see Hamilton get more minutes, I’m sure Barnes does too. But when you have a guy who is 1-6 from the floor, decides not to pass the ball into the block for Pittman (his man wasn’t attempting to deny the entry pass) and instead launch a 25 footer; well, that style of play should *not* be encouraged.
We have too many guys on this squad to make it a one man show. This isn’t the team we had when Durant was here, nor is Hamilton at the same level offensively as Durant was. I’ve maintained that we will go far if the guys buy into the idea of the team being more important than the individual. If Barnes allows Hamilton to pull that stunt, the other players might not continue to be so giving.

how in the hell did that turn into an impressive performance?,/em>
Because defense is the constant.
We go through braindead periods — from both players and coaches on offense — but this team grinds opponents into dust. They don’t have anything left when it is crunch time in the 2nd half. No legs, no stamina, no strength. Pitt had open looks, but didn’t have enough left in the tank to square up and shoot.
This was a game that Texas has normally lost under Barnes — early season, no offensive flow, periods of indecision which leads to standing around. But that was on offense. At no time did we let up on defense. We might not have rotated smartly all the time, but everyone was moving and throwing their bodies around.
November 24th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
After that game, there is about a 250% chance Balbay starts the next game. Defense, rebounding, defense, amazing passing, hustle, some more defense, and minimal turnovers and missed layups…oh yeah, and defense, are all things that Barnes values to the highest degree.
Hamilton and Williams are simply too good and Mason is simply too useless for the current minutes situation to be occurring.
Wangmene was absolutely horrible. He can’t catch the ball, fouls way too often and in dumb situations, doesn’t go after the ball, and has no offensive repertoire. So naturally he plays more minutes than his entire career.
I don’t care how many Goddamn fouls Pittman has in the game. When we are that stagnant we need his ass in there to give us some hope of scoring.
Imagine how much smarter Hamilton and Brown would play and how much more assertive Bradley would be if they didn’t think they would be pulled after one questionable shot or mistake.
We play great individual defense most of the time, but we still aren’t playing as a team. When the guys learn to play together and cover each others mistakes, we will be unbreakable on defense.
Overall in the tournament, we played two lackluster games (starting and finishing well in both, incidentally) and won by 25 and 16 respectively. Our lineups are already beginning to take shape, and guys like Brown, Bradley, Hamilton, and Balbay have shown they will be stars along side the established twosome in the frontcourt. I think all six of those guys could legitimately average double figures in scoring, and we will be very balanced in that regard (I.e. we won’t have one guy leading the team in scoring two nights in a row hardly ever).

You can’t give guys especially freshmen minutes with no consequences or repercussions for their mistakes. When Durant was here he had to rely on the younger guys because he didn’t have the senior leadership that he has now. Hamilton was 2-7 tonight. He is not the messiah that Trips tries to make him out to be. He has had two 2-7 5 point games so far this season. Do you recall Durant having one game like that ? He simply is not a one and done type of player. He obviously has some skills but let’s stop with all this undue praise on the kid.
Huckleberry said:

In his first game against a competent opponent Durant went 7-19 including 1-8 from three point range against Michigan State in a 63-61 loss. Later he went 5-15 from the field including 0-4 from three point range against LSU in a 76-75 overtime win.
The difference was that Durant was allowed to keep putting up shots. With good reason, of course.

Wall and Cousins don’t have leashes; they play for Calipari.
As of now, I’m not sure how Self is going to treat Henry, but I’d expect him to get the yank on pretty short notice, given how he’s handled freshman in the past (i.e. Playing Stephen Vinson over Chalmers). But he let him play through a little more than I would have expected against Memphis, so it remains to be seen.

Couldn’t agree more, so I looked it up. Here are the scores for the last 10 minutes of the first four games:
UCI — 25-13
WC — 20-9
Iowa — 24-12
Pitt — 24-11
Second-half shooting: Pitt, at 11 of 30, 37 percent, is by far the best of the four opponents. The other three shot worse than 25 percent. Meanwhile, Texas shot 9 of 18 against WC, which was by far its worst. In the other games, UT shot 18 of 27 twice and 17 of 26 from the field last night. Against Iowa, they made all 17 of their two-point FGs in the second half.
Texas FT shooting has improved in the second half of each game, too, for whatever that’s worth. Pretty sure turnovers have gone down as well, but I don’t have an easy source on that.
For this season, anyway, the first half is going to be prologue.
Trips Right said:

I think we need change our expectation level for this team with respect to teams in years past. This isn’t about Pitt or Iowa, or about beating the Baylors or Oklahoma States in conference. It’s about competing at a final four level. It’s about beating Kansas, Kentucky, and Michigan State. That’s our measuring stick.
My point is, when you put Mason, Balbay, Wangmane, James, and Brown on the floor for extending periods of time in a non-conference game, and you happen to be held scoreless for a 5 minute stretch, you’re doing your team and your younger players a disservice. If Hamilton was pulled for not entering the basketball, then so be it. I have no problem with that. Coach him to do it and move on. If this thing escalates into a Barnesian pissing match as SkyMonkey has alluded to time and again, then that’s an issue. A talent like Hamilton needs some freedom to operate.
Bob in Houston said:

I agree, Trips. Barnes always thought he wanted to coach in the NBA… he wouldn’t last a month. The best players play because they have to. You can’t afford to bench them because you’re ticked at them.
I don’t want Hamilton to have his own wing in Barnes’s doghouse. Doesn’t help the team reach the goal.

Durant was allowed to play through bad shooting nights for a few reasons. 1) That team was not as deep as this one, 2) Durant didn’t fuck up nearly as much as Hamilton and 3) He was entirely too talented offensively not to have on the floor. Like I said Hamilton is not on that level.
