This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.
The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

I think you showed great restraint in this post. It would have been easier to “go off” on Barnes.

The worst thing that could have happened to Vince is to go to Tenn. He needed a coach that was gonna work with his QB, and mold him into a NFL QB. Vince, on the other hand, went where the coach wants his QB to be a 78 passer rating robot. I hope somehow those two are split up. Whether it’s Fisher gone, or Vince gone, I just want him to go to a place where he can throw a 12 yard pass, and someone actually can turn it into 35 yards.
I hope Young keeps up the game manager role to build his stock, then gets the hell out of there, or Bud let’s the Fish go. So yeah, I am hoping for 250 yards passing and 50 yards rushing, with 2tds and no turnovers.

would i rather have vy on the texans? sure, but that’s the part of me that sees the world through orange-shaded glasses.

Matt Schaub has the best receiver in the NFL. He has a great tight end. He even has respectable complimentary receivers too, which get single coverage when Johnson is terrifying opposing defense.
Now, give VY Steve Slaton, Owen Daniels, and the rest of the Texans skill players, and you would see Young throwing for 250-300 yards too. The difference is Young wouldn’t lose the game in the waning stages. He is a winner, and winners make plays, and give confidence to other people around them.

Also, let’s all pray that Vince stays healthy. The 3rd down conversions he made tonight with his legs don’t happen if he’s dinged up and can’t run. He is gaining on the passing abilities to absolutely kill defenses, and as long as he can stay healthy, the defenses will open up even more to his passing.
As someone much better than me said a few weeks ago, we are seeing the “mid-sophomore” Vince right now…just hang on and watch.

As a die-hard Longhorn and a loyal Houstonian this was a tough one to take. As much as I wanted the Texans to pick Vince, probably my favorite football player ever, by last season Mario looked like at least as good of a pick. Sort of a, we passed on Jordan but got Hakeem. But now? Mario has failed to develop as a consistent pass-rusher in his fourth season (while nursing a shoulder injury) and Vince has reeled off four straight wins as if he was never abandoned by his franchise for well over a year. All Vince haters in Houston who patted themselves on the back? The debate begins anew.
But what makes me angriest are all those so-called Houston sports fans who root for the Titans. I guarantee I love Vince just as much as you, but I want him to fail against the Texans. They are, after all, my hometown team. Bud Adams is slime. He shanghaied this city for tens of millions of dollars to expand and improve the Astrodome, then jumped ship for NASHVILLE a mere ten years later. Now he brings Elvin Bethea, Warren Moon, Earl Campbell and all the players WE supported up to Nashville to honor them, lording stolen Houston pro football history over us. He threw over 30 years of supporting his crappy team in our face by blaming the fans instead of his greed for the move, the implication being that we weren’t a quality NFL fanbase. Well, after seeing how many alleged Houstonians handled the Mario-Vince pick, I think Bud might be right. Maybe Houston isn’t worthy on an NFL team. See, commentator sunburnt orange above. If you can lower yourself to rooting for the team that abandoned you, then I don’t respect you. Bob McNair fought hard to bring Houston an NFL team, and people are only too happy to piss on him. VY til I die, but Texans for life.

I was thinking something similar last night, though a teething baby kept me from seeing most of Vince’s first and second downs. The clutch play reminded me of Vince prior to Mizzou ‘04: good in the clutch, but not yet dominating to stay out of clutch situations.

Here’s the deal. I’m rooting for VY. I love watching the guy play. I have some DVDs of old Doak Walker footage from the ’40s, and it’s the closest I can think of to VY’s play. The guy just seems to be reacting quicker than everybody else. If he played for the Broncos, I’d root for the Broncos. If he played for the Redskins or Eagles…well, this Cowboys fan was never that crazy about Jerry Jones to start with, so…
I’ve never had a reason to care for the Texans. I’m a Cowboys fan, so they were poised to take the position the Oilers used to hold – 2nd favorite NFL team. No more. Watching the Texans crowd last night, I realized that they are all eaten up with bitterness about VY. If Vince signed with the Chiefs, and only came to town every few years, they would still boo him, and the team would still make it the biggest game of the year. Segments of Houston may love Vince, but the Texans’ fans hate him, and will always do so. Somehow, Vince failure is a Houston Texans victory. I can’t imagine ever again rooting for the Texans.
Maybe if they draft Colt…

Does that make moving the Oilers any less of a douche move? Hell no!! If you say Bob McNair only cares about my money, then even if that’s true I can accept that. Irregardless, he brought an NFL team back to my hometown!!
To me, it’s no contest. I am not rooting for a team from Tennessee or from suck-ass Arlington over a team from my hometown. If you want to call me a sheep then fine. But we are all sheep then. The dome was a pile of shit and nobody this day and age should have been forced to play in that rats nest. I continued to support the Titans until all the old Oilers were retired or gone and then they drafted VY so I loved them all over again. I also root for the Saints since I graduated with Brees at WHS.

Confessional: Texans fan base is full of aggy and cougar high. This cannot be denied. We truly are the Baylor of the AFC. We even cheer for first downs like Baylor does. Indeed though I feel like Metallica wrote “One” about the Houston Texans fan experience, I yam what I yam. I won’t go a-changing.

I’m confused. Is the mercenary comment supposed to offend? Because that’s all that professional sports is. A bunch of mercenaries. I just so happen to be a Dallas Cowboys fan by birth and upbringing as my father is from the Dallas area. But once I set foot on the University of Texas campus, professional sports suddenly didn’t seem so important. Which brings me to my next point.
I have a huge affiliation and connection to a team, thank you very much. Many teams, in fact. All of them calling themselves the Texas Longhorns. And that affiliation and connection is one that I feel comfortable with. The odds of the University of Texas Longhorns packing up and moving to Nashville, Tennessee seem pretty small.
You enjoy being loyal to a professional sports team. That’s fine. I’m just not comfortable with the logic of rooting for mercenary players playing for mercenary coaches paid by mercenary owners and then berating others for being mercenary fans.
TexanAlex said:

Huck, didn’t intend to address you particularly as mercenary. I was speaking in hypothetical for others reading the thread, about a certain subset of NFL fans in general, not you or your connection to the Texas Longhorns. There are a lot of NFL fans out there who follow the pro game without any affiliation. Imagine following college football without cheering for or supporting the Longhorns. What a nightmarish wasteland that would be. I’m sure you would agree that having a team overall enhances the fan experience. That’s what I was speaking to.
Really though, cheering for the Texans makes me wonder what I’d do without the Longhorns. I can’t envision cheering for both the Texans and the Aggies. Urp.

This is my first year to not have season tickets to the Texans, so I’m fairly invested. I went all day yesterday thinking I was going to root for them, afterall the game means more to them within the context of the season. I was getting asked left and right all day as my allegiances in the sporting realm, or any realm where opinions are relevant, are widely known. Then the lights came on and I just can’t root against VY. He gave me more absolute euphoric moments in the National Championship game then the Texans ever have.
Alex, I understand your point and to me it’s defensible.
VY is not better than Schaub although that’s based on not having a large enough sample size of VY”s recent games. Schaub is not the Texans problem.
AJ isn’t going anywhere, that’s ridiculous.
Nate Washington should have held on to that fucking ball. Goddamn it, the same thing happened in ‘06. A Titan reciever dropped a sure thing td.
Fuck the Cowboys. I think the Cowboys and Texans have the same amount of playoff victories since the Texans have been in the league.
One last thing, Bob McNair is a much finer man than Bud Adams. I’ve known people that have worked for him, and people that have bumped into him while traveling to an away game. McNair just straight up came over to some Texans fans at Pikes Market in Seattle and thanked them for making the trip.

I went to the game last night. VY is a very good NFL quarterback. Much better than he’ll ever get credit for being. He did what he does last night — willed his team to victory. The difference between he and Schaub was clear at the end of the game. Schaub looked lost and confused, waiting for Kubiak to tell him what to do in the last 50 seconds. Right after VY confidently led the Titans down the field.
I love VY. And I miss the Oilers. I’ve been trying to get behind the Texans, but they are such a damn aggie team. It must be said.

I’ll tell you one thing, magnusbleuveigner. I completely agree with what you said about Schaub. He’s like the anti-Vince. All of his tangibles make scouts drool, but you can’t trust him to win games. He’s put up great numbers and made great throws this year, but also back-breaking mistakes. There was a lot of hand-wringing in Houston on Chris Brown’s failure to punch it in at Arizona…no one seemed to care the Schaub and just thrown a pick-6 on the previous possession on a lazy throw on a curl to the sideline. Cromartie made like Beamon and jumped all over that. A telling thing…when have you ever seen Schaub audible? A: Never. Even Vince, who apparently the Tennessee coaches didn’t trust to valet their cars after the Gillette Stadium debacle, is allowed to audible. That tells me a lot about Schaub.

“Bud Adams is slime. He shanghaied this city for tens of millions of dollars to expand and improve the Astrodome, then jumped ship for NASHVILLE a mere ten years later. “- TexanAlex
There were 15 stadiums built from the 90’s to the early 2000’s. Which means talks were probably going on from the mid to late 80’s to the mid to late 90’s. Exactly the time when Adams was trying to do what everyone else was doing.
There were 6 renovations done during this time span also. Only the bills were cheaper than ours(63mil). The others were, Jacksonville(121 million), Oakland(200 million), San Diego(78 million), Chicago(365 million), and Green Bay(294 million).
Only two facilities from the 70’s remained untouched, Arrowhead and the Superdome. None from the 60’s or earlier.
The Astrodome needed WAY more than 67 million dollars to bring it up to spec. Anyone from Houston knows that, by having to drive past that eyesore on 610. It was ugly inside and out. It was falling apart. That much became obvious when Reliant went up right next to it. The comparison was laughable. I gave you the previous stadiums age on quite a few of these, so you can see that they were built after the Dome was, and still deemed unfit.
Houston did everything Bud Adams was asking for after the fact. They separated the baseball and football facilities, and built a brand new state of the are stadium. So why didn’t they do that for him? simple. They just didn’t like him, and that’s why I could care less. To let your football team leave the state over petty differences is just ridiculous!

I think there are two kinds of Texans fans, and we really only get one posting here.
One is the Texans fan who loves Vince Young and feels all kinds of torn when this game comes around.
Then there is the majority of Texans fans who hate Vince Young and project all their lousy bitterness from years of football frustration, failure, abandonment, and futility on him. They need him to fail so bad because him succeeding is just too painful. One more painful indignity stacked on top of too many painful indignities to list.
I didn’t have that heart attack last night, and for that I thank Vince Young. I listed in another thread the sheer volume of things Vince was going to have to overcome last night. That was a lion’s den and a half.
The thing that most impresses me about his performance, more than the raging rabid cage of ags and coogs, more than the pressure and weight of the last year, was the fact that the Texans had 2 weeks to gameplan against his weaknesses, and he still had a great game.
