Earl Thomas is a finalist for the Thorpe Award

Posted by HenryJames on November 23rd, 2009 under Football

Along with Florida’s Joe Haden and Tennessee’s Eric Berry. As I predicted.

Thomas is second on the team in tackles and PBUs and has tied a school record with seven interceptions this season.

Berry has been playing closer to the line this year from what I’ve watched, but Thomas only has one fewer TFL and the same number of forced fumbles. Thomas deserves it.

  1. I cannot seem to find a link to confirm this. I’ve seen it on shaggybevo and now here, but nowhere else. Not even on the Thorpe Award website.

  2. I haven’t either actually. I saw it on SB and assumed it was true.

If this is a hoax, SailorRipley should be fired.

  3. I went ahead and posted it on BON as well.

If this is a hoax, PB is gonna beat me.

  4. I agree he deserves it but there is no way the voters will give it to him over Berry I’m afraid.

  5. We should also fire Vasherized for listening to Bruce Hornsby and The Range.

Sweep it all up, things related and not.

  6. That’s just the way it is.

  7. Just roll with it, baby.

Wait, that’s the other Bruce Hornsby.

  8. Some things’ll never change.

  9. I agree he will not win it but deserves it.

  10. Ah, don’t you believe it.

  11. Can someone please explain to me how it is that Earl Thomas doesn’t declare early? He fits the Curtis Lofton mold to a “T”: elite player among the best at his position whose only weakness (size) can’t be improved by another year in college and for whom another year is only an injury risk. Not to mention the serious pay cut he’ll take thanks to the pending rookie salary cap.

  12. Bob Stoops told him he was a 5th rounder.

i think thomas would be a great nickleback in the nfl, I think teams are still worried about him being able to take out nfl rbs up the middle

  14. @HenryJames:

Are you trying to make an argument for me that UT players, not A&M players or OU players, are the dumbest bunch of mouthbreathing motherfuckers in the conference?

    Nate,

I’m not an NFL draft expert, but I don’t think there have been many examples of safeties turning pro after their sophomore season. Plus, Curtis Lofton is listed as 6′0″ 240 lbs on nfl.com, whereas Earl Thomas is listed as 5′10″ 197 on the Longhorn site which is notorious for inflating measurements.

I’ll wish him well whenever he decides is the right time for him, but I wouldn’t expect an undersized sophomore safety to turn pro, whether from Texas, OU or elsewhere, at least not unless the player had some different reason (e.g. urgent need for money, couldn’t handle the schoolwork, off-field problems, etc.).

  16. Jordan Shipley is now a Finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, along with Golden Taint from ND and Freddie Barnes from Bowling Green.

Will Jordan go pro this year or come back for a tenth season?

  18. “Are you trying to make an argument for me that UT players, not A&M players or OU players, are the dumbest bunch of mouthbreathing motherfuckers in the conference?”

Sam Bradford and his dumbass decision locked that up that argument for the Sooners for eternity. A&M players aren’t dumb because so few of them actually choose to go to A&M. Or maybe they do but the choice is Sam Houston St or A&M.

  19. Today is Bruce Hornsby’s birthday.

Nate, you should listen to the Ags. He’ll stay because Tom Hicks will sign him to a minor league contract. They have it figured out.

  21. Sailor Ripley, you are FIRED!

Now, Earl Thomas, come sit in my lap. You are the cutest little black man I have seen since that Emmanuel Lewis and I were doing blow out of each other’s navel’s. Earl, uhh Earl, don’t . . . don’t do it Earl. NOOO! NOT THE HAIR!!!

Going into the game you would have thought the battle would have been a classic matchup between West Virginia’s frontcourt and Villanova’s backcourt.

The only question is which team could impose their will and dictate the mismatch. Villanova might try to do it by pressing and playing up tempo. West Virginia’s

Dam, I was just going to post the same shit.

OT and DB are the most important postions. OT we need Westerman, Haverty and Drango/Greenlea/Cochran. What do we know about Cochran?

We know Junior Day #1 is this Saturday. There’s flux in regard to who will and won’t be on the roster come the 2010 season, but let’s assume the numbers don’t really matter, as a whole bunch of seniors leave after 2010 and attrition will take place as well.

So your number is 25 max.

    What positions

Fundamentally on both sides of the ball we are very weak. On defense we are athletic but don’t really understand when to pressure the ball or double team. Many times we over persue at a time when the offensive player is not in a dangerous position and end up giving up an easy

Agreed Mike. The game is just slower for Scottie Reynolds, totally in control. Imagine him last year with Blake Griffin.

Singletary was really effective in the first meeting. He’s been frustrated a little bit the last few games, so I’d like to see him go off without much shot-blocking from the OU front

Can that golfer shoot free throws, and dribble penetrate?

  • Victor Scott commented on the blog post Kansas Open Thread   1 hour, 32 minutes ago

One piece of good news for the day for the Horns. They picked up a verbal commitment from the number one golfer in the country who is a junior, Jordan Spieth out of Dallas. He will make our team top five or better the day he shows up on campus.

    Ny Horn -

You should watch the NBA more. The center position is extinct. Aldrich will probably play 10 years.

You know the leader in scoring for centers in the NBA?

    Chris Kaman.

    Not kidding.

NY Horn: considering what I understand our track record to be with putting our big men into The League, I think Iraq might be a little beneath him. Maybe France or Spain…

Mack: right, we abuse our football players by poking them in the chest. Big difference. Though we’ve got a new coach in town, so I haven’t seen how he does abuse.

I’ll take Hamilton in the game the rest of the season for 25 minutes a game and we will be a better team in the long run. We must have 5 players who can score to have a chance against the premier teams in the country. I agree that he will have to
