Lopez is an idiot, that's well known and documented.

But I gotta agree with him on this issue. As a radio analyst/host, you HAVE to talk about things like this. You think Sumlin isn't one of the hottest coaching prospects in the country? He obviously is, and Lopez has to talk about it, since it's a local coach who is 100% sure to leave Cooger High in a year or two (or sooner). Sumlin needs to develop some thicker skin.

"Hey, guys and girls.
Just stumbled upon the Sumlin thread, so let me answer a few things directly:
1) My source on Stoops having interest in listening to Notre Dame, should they come calling, is impeccable. The name is a trusted one and a good friend who has helped me on several stories. Anyone who thinks Sumlin would not be a logical candidate to replace Stoops is living in a bubble.
2) My source on Arizona State having much interest in Sumlin -- even before this season began -- has had a relationship with both Sumlin and Dennis Erickson since their days at Washington State. I have very good UH sources as well. It wasn't too long ago that I was called a number of different things for saying and writing that Dave Maggard would be forced out as Athletic Director. I had that story a week before anyone else even approached it ... and how did that turn out?
3) Out of respect for his in-season goals, I did not ask Sumlin about his job prospects on Thursday's show. He brought it up. And when he did, he made a HUGE factual error that I mentioned in the interview, but he ignored. The entire premise of Sumlin's argument was that I called the Coogs irrelevant. I never have said that, nor have I said anything of the sort. I buy UH tickets. I go to games. I have been to the Hall of Honor banquet and other UH events to support UH initiatives. I support UH as a local team, just as I support the Rice Owls and other local teams. Because it's the right thing to do.
4) Coach Sumlin should remember that last year, I -- and I alone -- initiated an effort to take my then-talkshow on 790 onto campus, so we could promote UH athletics. We did three shows on-campus, when UH football was not the hot commodity it is today. Coach Sumlin and coaches from various so-called "minor" sports were guests. I wanted to do these shows, because I wanted to show support of the Coogs.
5) I find it curious that Coach said I should check facts, when he did not check his, regarding the "irrelevant" comment, efforts I have made to support the Coogs and my fair -- and accurate -- commentary about potential job prospects.
6) I also find it curious that he chose to talk about how these rumors affect recruiting, when two of Coach Sumlin's mentors, Bob Stoops and Mike Leach, have to deal with these rumors every year. And yet they they have somehow managed to still recruit quite well. As I told him on-air, with success comes speculation. It's part of the job and one reason he makes the money he does.
7) I like Coach Sumlin. I have been on-record with this since he arrived on-campus and have had a good rapport with him.
8) As I often make clear, I'm easy to find. Unlike many who are message-board brave, I put my name on every opinion I share. I do not use anonymity as a coward's shield. I'm at games and events all over town. I have covered sports on the local, national and international level for more than 20-years. This is my email -- jlopez@sportsradio610.com. If Ty Kolb or anyone wants to call me a beaner or say I should cover "futbol" to my face, drop me a line, so we can meet, have a beer and talk about it.
Thanks to all and see you on the radio and at SI.com,
John."

I can't believe this douchebag got a gig columning for SI. Last time I read him was his goodbye column in the Chronicle, when he retired to join up with some sports-limo-party company. I guess that fell through ...? Hard to believe.

I exchanged emails with Lopez a few years ago, pointing out that in a column he credited Texas with only three national championships, not four. His response was a condescending "maybe you don't follow college football much, but no one counts that one championship" POS. I pointed out that I knew all about the history of AP and UPI polls, understood the circumstances around 1970, knew that despite his protestations Texas has, in fact, won four national championships, and how could he be so thick as to think I didn't know his motivation for discounting it? I'm still awaiting a reply to that one. Lopez, I haz pwned you beeotch!

“I’m forced to switch back and forth depending on who’s less annoying at the moment.”

You just described Houston sports radio in 15 words.

Isn't that all sports radio? The older I get, the less patience I have....
