Wait. Catamounts. That sounds even dirtier.
This game is supposed to be on ESPNU, but various people on the internet have informed me via the internet that the game isn’t listed in some of their guides. So who knows?
But we’ll throw this up there for anyone who can actually see the game.
Western Kentucky will be led by Dikembe Mutombo’s nephew, Harouna. You’re going to get sexed, Harouna. But you will not like it.

I know it’s hard to say this on a team with 14 scholarship players, but Bradley and Hamilton need to be playing more. I guess that will gradually increase as the season goes on.
Also, I like the lineup that has Balbay at the point, Brown at SG, and Hamilton at SF. What I dislike is Mason and/or Ward playing with Balbay. I guess I’m just scarred from last year. We’ve got shooters now; let’s play them.

It was a little sloppy and we tried to force the issue a few times, especially on some ill advised alley-opps. IIRC, I think we made 1 and missed 4 resulting in TO’s. We’ve got so many guys getting PT, and 4 freshman…it’ll take time to completely gel and have these guys playing consistent night in and night out. I thought the energy was there, especially on defense. The crowd was out of it though.
CrazyJoeDavola said:
November 18th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
I don’t think the lack of energy was physical. That looked like a bored team out there. I’m guessing that’s going to be Rick’s biggest challenge this year … well, that and making sure J’Covan doesn’t go off on the other team inevitably trying to goad him into something silly.
Seriously, WCU looked a little like Baylor out there. Serious chippiness, especially from that Magnus Magnusson guy (or whatever the dirty Swede’s name was).
We’re a bunch of really nifty parts right now, and that will continue to be the case for a while. It will be interesting to see what a disciplined team will do to us, but I can’t see anyone else being able to withstand the storm surge we’ll be sending their way every night.
Right now my fave five are Dex, Damion, J’Covan, Bradley and Balbay.

First, I was at the game and made a point of watching J’Covan off the ball o see how he was with the refs. He was chatting them up and slapping them on the ass after plays where he was called for a foul, as well as other plays. Also, J’Covan got smacked quite a few times and didn’t lose his cool. After watching this game, and the first game I really don’t have any worries about J’Covan’s behavior. The kid looks genuinely happy to be playing ball for UT.
Other thoughts.
1) W. Carolina Sodomites were all up in our ass. Very chirpy and somewhat physical. For a team that was getting it’s ass kicked, they still played tough.
2) I believe we had 19 turnovers and they had 10 steals. Some of that was due to #1
3) Hamilton and Brown need to learn when to pass and not take an offensive charge.
4) Bradley’s dunk was sick. I didn’t think he had enough elevation or space to make that. Thought for sure it was going to be a lay up. Kid can fly.
5) Our defense is relentless
6) Did not see Chapman (still has flu?) or Hill play. Lots of Wangmene, which is good.
7) It occurred to me that we have 4 players that will be major contributors that didn’t play basketball last year at all.
- J’Covan Brown
- Jordan Hamilton
- Jai’ Lucas
- Alexi Wangmene
8) I’m hoping that when this season ends we’ll look back on Lucas not playing until end of December as a good thing because it means that Brown, Bradley, and Balbay spend more time at PG until then.
dick said:

Barnes wasn’t particularly happy about the defensive effort in game one, so that was, uh “emphasized” in practice. He made a point of telling the team that they would play defense tonight – or they wouldn’t play.
This squad is quick, tenacious and showing signs of having great anticipation on defense. On the ball defense was terrific tonight, but I was really impressed with the off-the-ball switching and how everyone, freshmen included, played gap defense really well. Texas did a great job of shutting down inside, inducing the kick out pass, and then still getting out on the shooter.
Western Carolina is supposed to be good at shooting threes, and they hit 3 of 19 for the night.
Ten Texas players got at least 10 minutes of playing time, and 5 had 21 minutes or more. It was a helluva display of mix and match.
The worst part of the night was free throw shooting. Aside from Damion James, it was pathetic, and baffling.
Offense was sloppy from the start. There were 21 turnovers, although not all were the guards fault. Several times there were nice entry passes and the big men either let them clang off their hands, or they weren’t aggressive enough in blocking out the defender and taking possession. J’Covan was especially robbed of a couple of sweet assists when Dexter simply wasn’t ready for the pass.
I imagine Barnes got what he wanted out of this game. Everyone got his message on defense, and they displayed an effort and tenacity that would make Will Muschamp proud.
They also screwed up enough on offense to give Barnes plenty to work on between now and Monday when they play Iowa in Kansas City.

dick, right now, I’ll take Balbay over Hamilton. I don’t expect that will last all season – or even more than a couple weeks max – but this is two games in a row where the team’s performance and energy level significantly perked up once Dogus got on the floor.
If you want to sub Hamilton for Bradley, I wouldn’t mind at all. But both the frosh look a little tentative. I’m hoping Avery’s second-half dunk will get him into destroy mode. For Hamilton, it’s just a matter of time.
It’s amazing that we’re going to be annihilating people this year, and yet may not have a single AA player. Voters are going to look at stat sheets and see a roster stuffed with guys going 10 points 7 rebounds 3 assists 2 steals in 15 minutes of playing time.
Sorry, but no way can anyone doing that come close to matching the production and savviness of Luke Harangody! And John Wall! JOHN WALL!!!!!

With such a deeply talented team, it’s become widely accepted that Barnes’ greatest challenge will be dividing playing time and putting 5 players on the court that allow for the greatest chance of success at any given time. It’s hard to think that this would be difficult given all that talent but there have been times thus far in which I’ve questioned the personnel decisions (kinda like when Chiles and Kirkendoll are on the field at the same time). For instance, we saw a lineup at one point in the second half tonight that I believed looked like this:
PG- Balbay
SG- Ward
SF- Mason
PF- Johnson
C- James
Essentially it was the ’08 squad sans Abrams. And unless we want to see another second round exit in the tourney, this doesn’t need to become a trend.

ransom, two things. Remember Hamilton didn’t play ball last year so he’s going to be a little rusty for the first month or so. Secondly, I’ve already seen some amazing moves by him in just 2 games. Some more items worth noting:
- J’Covan took 3pt attempts, made both and there was no doubt. Very nice stroke.
- J’Covan had 6 turnovers and 3 assists. Should have been the other way around. He had 3 sweet passes that weren’t handled well by the big men. I think Dex dropped 2 of them.
- Gary Johnson played 2 minutes more than Pittman (19 vs 17 min)
- As expected, total domination of the boards UT 47 to WC 32 boards.
In the first game it was UT 49 to UCI 30. There are going to be very few games where UT gets out rebounded.

It’s going to be a really fun year. I have no idea how you take this much collective individual talent and turn it into a viable rotation. There are at least 12 guys who deserve to play night in and night out, but that can’t really work in basketball. The toughest thing for Barnes is going to be figuring out a 9-man rotation. And right now I have no good idea as to what that should look like, although I’m certain it includes Dex, James, Bradley, Hamilton, Brown, and (begrudgingly) Balbay for now. Oddly enough, getting what he should get from this team might make this Barnes’ toughest coaching job ever.
We looked like an All-State AAU team last night at times — with the obvious exception of the stifling defense — but in the sense that we had no real offensive flow, the plays we ran were two-man pick and rolls and dribble and dish, and the ball movement was tentative. Plus the 21 turnovers and the highlight dunk. It’s going to be a really fun year and I hope this team comes together right.
lowdenswain said:

Balbay is the best PG on this team right now. It’s amazing that he consistently gets to the rim without the threat of a shot. It’s like Ginobli going left.
I like Gary Johnson much more as a trash man than a second or third option on offense shooting elbow jumpers. He brought the highest energy level last night.
Jordan Hamilton would be averaging 22 a game for Baylor right now…..if he could take the ball away from LeastDarius Dunn.
Maybe the mirror has contorted my perception…..is Lexi’s head the right size?

If you all notice it really feels like at that 13 to 14 minute mark in the first half of both of these games, they start to wear down and we start to speed up, I know that the competition hasn’t been any good, but the theory will stay the same.
Wear the other teams down and smother them with good defense… There isn’t a team in the country that can match texas player for player with the exception of KU, our biggest challenge this year will be trying to make a lineup work with so many players and keep them all happy and playing with intensity but whats funny is its also our biggest strength.
When it comes to march and everything matters and your playing day in and day out, this team’s depth will be the reason they get to the final four.
To me this freshman class is downright nasty, they could go to the sweet 16 maybe elite 8 if we have the right bracket by themselves, then you add in our senior leadership that has all-american talent and you’ve got the makings of a team that can be the last man standing… God bless Texas and Will Muschamp
