If Sam Houston State wins then Rick Barnes will have trick-fucked me in a completely unexpected way. I figured if Baylor beat us like a drum three time then should be able to ease past Sam Houston State. I did not know about the Rec Specs.

Yeah, that Purdue pick was awesome. It seems like I heard something about them having injuries, but it slipped my mind when making picks. I’ve literally not seen them play for one second this season. Not a highlight, nothing. Good work.

Damion James looks very relaxed and is letting the game come to him.
The defensive intensity by our guys is great to watch, and they are doing the right things on offense. They do seem like they are a little out of sync offensively though, and I hope its just early season rustiness. We are playing so many guys that it could be they are having trouble jelling.
Brown is off to a shaky start, but it is alot to ask him to come in and run the #3 team at the point, given his situation. Balbay and Ward have combined for 9 assists and 0 turnovers, whereas Brown has 0 assists and 6 turnovers.
Scipio Tex said:

I’m not concerned either. Its good to see Barnes letting him get minutes, such a stark contrast to the football team. Wangmene put in some good minutes, showing good agression and athleticism.
We have multiple guys who can play above the rim and get dunks for the first time ever. Our best teams in the past only had one legitimate guy who could throw down. I don’t know how many points we have left on the table, and how many close games we lost because of not being able to finish strong. Not this year…

The 4 freshmen are on the floor with 6′6″ Gary Johnson playing the 5 despite being shorter than Hamilton and Williams. The are active in passing lanes and good with their hands on defense, just need better footwork. This is a nice glimpse of things to come.
I don’t see us struggling to put away overmatched teams like we did last year.

47 point victory, out rebounded them 46 to 25, 10 blocked shots and we held them to 27% shooting. This team can defend and rebound, Barnes’ two favorite things.
I guess we can worry about only hitting 62% of our FTs.

Here is my review -
Holy fuck.
The longer version – you can see where the team needs work (improved footwork playing man D, free throw shooting may be bumpy), but for sheer come-at-you-in-waves athleticism, and for having more than 1 guy with a high hoops IQ, this team is not lacking. Will they gel? Who knows, but if anyone can get ‘em to, Barnes can.
November 15th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
What happened to Chapman? Not like I’m crying over here, just wondering if I missed something. My father said he wasn’t even on the bench.
Some thoughts:
-iPowers, the disparity between Hamilton and Williams was blatantly obvious, so go away.
-Was very impressed with Balbay. His muscles were bulging like he’s on the juice and his jumper is much more aesthetic than last year. His ability to get into the lane has reached ungodly proportions and his passing is sickly good. Still incredible in man-to-man defense. Still needs to learn to finish.
-Brown, Ward, Bradley, Hamilton, and Balbay all get into the lane at will and are phenomenal passers. They have trouble converting at times…but it doesn’t really matter because…
-Damion James and Dexter Pittman are the best 1-2 punch in the frontcourt in the country. If you can find two people that are harder to matchup with than these two, I’ll respond “the NBA doesn’t count.” They clean up everything and don’t miss easy gimmes anymore. Dex dunks everything in sight like a donut into coffee. So much for the talk of Dex being out of shape and Damion having an eye on the draft. These guys just get it.
-This is the best passing team Barnes has had because it doesn’t rely on the PG to make every play. There is no individually great passer, like T.J., but the team as a whole (err, well maybe except Damion) just seems to understand the dynamic much, much better than last year. Still don’t like the 4-foot big-man-to-big-man pass inside, but only saw a few of those today. Also guys like Brown, Hamilton, and Bradley have panache, and who doesn’t love that?

Outside of the first few minutes*, I really couldn’t have been more impressed. Our “second team” of Balbay, Bradley, Hamilton, Johnson, and Williams or Hill might have beaten last year’s 1st team. Just ridiculous athleticism, everywhere.
Also, I enjoyed the guys sitting behind me who had apparently never seen a Texas basketball game before. But that small limitation didn’t prevent them from breaking down our roster for everyone. “Yeah, that #21 is Hill. He’s a freshman, which is why he’s so skinny. Who’s #50? He must also be another freshman.”
*With two minutes gone in the game, we had Balbay, Ward, and Mason all in the game at the same time. Hopefully this is the last time we see this particular lineup the rest of the season, outside of garbage time. It’s no coincidence that we took off with both Bradley and Hamilton in the game. After their initial appearance, I’m pretty sure we outscored them by about 50 the rest of the way.

-Stifling defense.
-Total controll of the boards.
-Wave after wave of players coming off the bench.
-Unreal physical talent from Dexter’s newfound stamina to Jordan Hamilton’s unreal body control
-Deep shooters
-Everyone getting to play
-18 assists
-10 blocked shots
-Pittman & James were 17 of 20 shooting
Just so many good numbers from that game. One concern I have is that I don’t know if UT will be tested enough when they face NC in Dallas. Anyone agree/disagree with that?
November 15th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

EggNog said:

They are Texas Southern bad, but remember that we struggled against Texas Southern last year. I was right behind the basket at that game last year, Damion James had zero points at the half and we didn’t pull away until late in the 2nd half. If we weren’t at home, we might have lost. This year, we trounce them by 50.
