Longhorn Basketball Opener: UC Irvine Anteaters

Posted by Scipio Tex on November 15th, 2009 under Football

Consider this your open thread.

J’Covan Brown likely gets the start at PG. We also get to see an assortment of toys unveiled along with a 280 pound Dexter Pittman.

Best time of the sports year – the overlap between college football, college basketball, late season NFL, MMA, and even a Manny Pacquiao fight.

  1. I’m wondering if they’re going to cut away from this soccer match on ESPNU. It’s a 0-0 tie with 4 minutes left, which takes it past 1pm.

  2. Dogus told my little brother that Dex (although slimmed down) is out of shape again. I hope this is not the case.

  3. Jesus Christ. I’m pissed.

  4. Anon -

He was injured for the scrimmages so I wouldn’t be surprised if he needs a game or two to get his wind. But he’s not going to decondition in a week and half.

These repressed gays just went to OT. Good God.

  5. Are they seriously sticking with the MAC soccer game in OT? Really???

  6. Thanks, Scip. That would explain why he didn’t perform so well.

  7. Scipio,

What are your thoughts on Niagara’s forwards?

  8. They can’t hang with Loyola’s frenetic pace!

  9. Game has started. Starters are Balbay, Ward, Mason, James, Pittman.

  10. Unbelieveable

  11. VY throws an INT … soccer instead of Texas hoops on ESPNU … today isn’t starting out as well as yesterday did.

  12. God damn goalie.

  13. How many people y’all think watching the MAC game besides Texas fans waiting for basketball? Is 17 being generous?

frenchie kids from loyola cant put it in the hole….thats what she said

  15. Double OT. This is cruel.

  16. Hell, it’s not even the MAC. It’s the MAAC.

  17. McCew – convert on that the crossing ball you Northeastern prep school queer.

  18. Will one of you assholes pick up the ball with your hands?!

  19. Radio link, anyone? Searching but have yet to find one.

  20. Loyola needs to get the ball to Bo Kimble.

  21. We’re down 15-10. Pittman has 8 of our 10. Bradley, Brown, Hamilton, Ward have combined for 0-6 from the field.

  22. This is a sick, sick joke. I hope that goalie is replaced by a slow moving, fat kid.

  23. Wittman you pussy.

  24. Pass it to the darkie!

  25. He’s playing with cum in his nose.

  26. This is still more exciting than Big 10 football.

  27. GOOAALLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!

  28. Finally.

  29. GGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL

  30. I told you Loyola would win. Pay up.

  31. That was epic.

  32. The Erwin center looks electric.

  33. Jordan Hamilton has a clean stroke.

  34. Oh DAMN. Damion James alley oop.

  35. James has good hands above the rim.

    What channel?

  37. Nice block by Shawn Williams.

  38. Pittman dunks the ball like it’s a grapefruit.

  39. Our frontline is filthy.

  40. Damion James… a “jumping jack.”

  41. Dexter Pittman should give Todd Wright part of his NBA signing bonus.

  42. Pittman did the Grapefruit 45 diet.

Who has a stream of this?

  44. I’m streaming something else watching this team.

  45. Has Dogus picked up a jump shot since last season?

  46. UC-Irvine has a guard with a 1974 ABA worthy afro. He probably goes by Ray-Ray or Bootsy.

  47. Our point guard just made a 3. Is that legal?

  48. J’Covan will not let you sleep on his perimeter shot. Then he turns over his man on D. Really like this kid.

    42-21, Horns.

  49. His nickname in college was “Sexual Chocolate”.

  50. How in the hell is Barnes going to put all these pieces together?

  51. He played Joe the Policeman in the What’s Going Down episode of That’s My Mama.

  52. We have guards who can dribble and score. This is weird.

  53. I’m kind of freaked out by our offensive diversity, depth, and talent. So is Justin Mason.

  54. Was that Trips doing the Bull dance in the camera?

  55. Pittman looks like he’s dunking a nerf.

  56. That inbounds pass from Dogus to Pittman was nice. Pittman is a force.

  57. Damion James looks very relaxed and is letting the game come to him.

The defensive intensity by our guys is great to watch, and they are doing the right things on offense. They do seem like they are a little out of sync offensively though, and I hope its just early season rustiness. We are playing so many guys that it could be they are having trouble jelling.

Brown is off to a shaky start, but it is alot to ask him to come in and run the #3 team at the point, given his situation. Balbay and Ward have combined for 9 assists and 0 turnovers, whereas Brown has 0 assists and 6 turnovers.

  58. Brown will come along fine. I have no concerns.

I think it’s safe to say that Dexter is in shape.

  59. sizzlechest said:

I also think it’s safe to say Damion James sets the tone for this team. His intensity is unreal right now.

  60. I’m not concerned either. Its good to see Barnes letting him get minutes, such a stark contrast to the football team. Wangmene put in some good minutes, showing good agression and athleticism.

We have multiple guys who can play above the rim and get dunks for the first time ever. Our best teams in the past only had one legitimate guy who could throw down. I don’t know how many points we have left on the table, and how many close games we lost because of not being able to finish strong. Not this year…

  61. This game is going to get really ugly. A lot of our reserves are better than our starters.

    Nice points, sizzle and Egg.

Avery Bradley’s intermediate game is beautiful.

  62. The 3 freshmen are looking really good right now.

  63. We are on a 58-15 “run” right now.

  64. The 4 freshmen are on the floor with 6′6″ Gary Johnson playing the 5 despite being shorter than Hamilton and Williams. The are active in passing lanes and good with their hands on defense, just need better footwork. This is a nice glimpse of things to come.

I don’t see us struggling to put away overmatched teams like we did last year.

  65. This might be the most exciting team to watch we’ve ever had. And that’s just the second 5. Unbelievable. We have a few fouls to give this year.

  66. 47 point victory, out rebounded them 46 to 25, 10 blocked shots and we held them to 27% shooting. This team can defend and rebound, Barnes’ two favorite things.

I guess we can worry about only hitting 62% of our FTs.

  67. you Northeastern prep school queer.

Everyone knows it’s not a real prep school unless it’s in New England.

I bet Barnes just sits around with a sh*teating grin on his face. The talent is embarassing. It even looks like someone erased all the Bread songs from Dex’s IPOD.

  69. Reid Gettys is into porn or at least he has a porn goatee. Reid you are 45+ years old, let it go.

  70. Here is my review -

    Holy fuck.

The longer version – you can see where the team needs work (improved footwork playing man D, free throw shooting may be bumpy), but for sheer come-at-you-in-waves athleticism, and for having more than 1 guy with a high hoops IQ, this team is not lacking. Will they gel? Who knows, but if anyone can get ‘em to, Barnes can.

  71. What happened to Chapman? Not like I’m crying over here, just wondering if I missed something. My father said he wasn’t even on the bench.

    Some thoughts:

-iPowers, the disparity between Hamilton and Williams was blatantly obvious, so go away.

-Was very impressed with Balbay. His muscles were bulging like he’s on the juice and his jumper is much more aesthetic than last year. His ability to get into the lane has reached ungodly proportions and his passing is sickly good. Still incredible in man-to-man defense. Still needs to learn to finish.

-Brown, Ward, Bradley, Hamilton, and Balbay all get into the lane at will and are phenomenal passers. They have trouble converting at times…but it doesn’t really matter because…

-Damion James and Dexter Pittman are the best 1-2 punch in the frontcourt in the country. If you can find two people that are harder to matchup with than these two, I’ll respond “the NBA doesn’t count.” They clean up everything and don’t miss easy gimmes anymore. Dex dunks everything in sight like a donut into coffee. So much for the talk of Dex being out of shape and Damion having an eye on the draft. These guys just get it.

-This is the best passing team Barnes has had because it doesn’t rely on the PG to make every play. There is no individually great passer, like T.J., but the team as a whole (err, well maybe except Damion) just seems to understand the dynamic much, much better than last year. Still don’t like the 4-foot big-man-to-big-man pass inside, but only saw a few of those today. Also guys like Brown, Hamilton, and Bradley have panache, and who doesn’t love that?

  72. Had plans earlier and could watch all the game live.

I just watched the game on tape. Wow. Just wow. I’m going to see them in person on Wednesday and can’t wait. These guys are the real deal.

  73. Cub reporter Vasherized was at the game and was able to smuggle out this footage of the James alley oop.

  74. Outside of the first few minutes*, I really couldn’t have been more impressed. Our “second team” of Balbay, Bradley, Hamilton, Johnson, and Williams or Hill might have beaten last year’s 1st team. Just ridiculous athleticism, everywhere.

Also, I enjoyed the guys sitting behind me who had apparently never seen a Texas basketball game before. But that small limitation didn’t prevent them from breaking down our roster for everyone. “Yeah, that #21 is Hill. He’s a freshman, which is why he’s so skinny. Who’s #50? He must also be another freshman.”

*With two minutes gone in the game, we had Balbay, Ward, and Mason all in the game at the same time. Hopefully this is the last time we see this particular lineup the rest of the season, outside of garbage time. It’s no coincidence that we took off with both Bradley and Hamilton in the game. After their initial appearance, I’m pretty sure we outscored them by about 50 the rest of the way.

  75. It’s nice to know that some things never change. Listening to the radio, here’s the opening tip, and….

GO. HORNS. GO. GO. HORNS. GO.

I don’t know why it bugged me, but it did. I guess because I’ve been hearing it since the building opened.

I agree with you, texoz. I saw them on tape, as well (since I live in Philly area). They are the real deal. Watching this puts me in a 1970s roller disco/Philly frame of mind, too. I cannot help but hum the song “Where Do we Go From Here” by “The Trammps” when viewing this tape. Dripping with talent, no doubt. Esp. Damion. Impressive. Imagine if the whole team wore Afros!

  77. -Stifling defense.
    -Total controll of the boards.
-Wave after wave of players coming off the bench.
-Unreal physical talent from Dexter’s newfound stamina to Jordan Hamilton’s unreal body control
    -Deep shooters
    -Everyone getting to play
    -18 assists
    -10 blocked shots
-Pittman & James were 17 of 20 shooting

Just so many good numbers from that game. One concern I have is that I don’t know if UT will be tested enough when they face NC in Dallas. Anyone agree/disagree with that?

  78. I think we will smash UNC. Their guard play is going to get abused by us, they aren’t a very good shooting team, and they beat Valpo by 10 at home today.

  79. Can anymore tell me more about UC-Irvine? Are they ‘bottom half of the Big 12′ bad, or Texas Southern bad?

  80. They are Texas Southern bad, but remember that we struggled against Texas Southern last year. I was right behind the basket at that game last year, Damion James had zero points at the half and we didn’t pull away until late in the 2nd half. If we weren’t at home, we might have lost. This year, we trounce them by 50.

If Sam Houston State wins then Rick Barnes will have trick-fucked me in a completely unexpected way. I figured if Baylor beat us like a drum three time then should be able to ease past Sam Houston State. I did not know about the Rec Specs.

Yeah, that Purdue pick was awesome. It seems like I heard something about them having injuries, but it slipped my mind when making picks. I’ve literally not seen them play for one second this season. Not a highlight, nothing. Good work.

1-2 to start things off, I think it’s clear I’m going to own this thing.
