Posted by Scipio Tex on November 15th, 2009 under Football

Enjoy your minimum three game suspension.

You may be fast but you can’t outrun BAC.

1. Things were going just a little TOO smoothly … someone had to be the straw that stirs the drink. Way to go, DJ!

2. Human nature my friend. You cannot experience massive football success without some degree of boneheadedness associated. I take these things seriously, but we also need to be realistic in that tracking 85 college males over four years should have some epsiodes like this.

I’m sure Mack will deal with it.

3. 3 game suspension means the next time we see you is probably next year.

Great job, DJ!

4. Considering DJ weighs roughly 123 lbs he probably reached a .08 after three thimbles of Zima.

I thought he was already serving a suspension.

6. Double secret suspension.

7. Scip – no doubt, especially since the essential nature of higher-end athletes is a certain inherent sense of infallibility / indestructibility. Add to that the customary zaniness of youth, and there you go …

Hopefully he didn’t blow a high number and is mostly in trouble for blowing positive while underage. Either way, I won’t be surprised if he’s done for the year. As I’ve posted elsewhere, I don’t think Mack is going to allow a(n) MNC announcer to be able to begin the game by saying, “And back to receive the opening kick for Texas is DJ Monroe, just back from his DWI suspension!”

8. Brown should text him his punishment.

10. What if his BAC was higher than his 40 time?

Who was the hard ass who issued the DWI? Hope this leads to the big promotion…the man who brought down another Texas running back. Way to go officer Douche

15.
DWI Under 21:

The law states that a minor commits an offense if he or she operates a motor vehicle in a public place while having any detectable amount of alcohol in the minor’s system.

If you’re under 21, here’s what happens the first time you are stopped for drinking and driving.

* 60-day driver’s license suspension
* up to a $500 fine
* 20 to 40 hours of community service
* mandatory attendance in alcohol-awareness classes

If you’re under 21, here’s what happens the first time you are found in possession of alcohol.

Any amount of beer, wine or liquor will trigger these penalties.

* 30-day driver’s license suspension
* up to a $500 fine
* 8 to 12 hours of community service
* mandatory attendance in alcohol-awareness classes
Notice that it states “ANY detectable amount”.

He’s f’ed. Whats done is done, but wish the officer would just give the guy a ride home next time instead of padding his stats. Probably same guy that got Augie

17. Sure, risk my career to coddle some kid so he can play football. Don’t think so Mysterious.

What makes me different? Am I coddled too much?

19. Scip – no doubt, especially since the essential nature of higher-end athletes is a certain inherent sense of infallibility / indestructibility. Add to that the customary zaniness of youth, and there you go …

I think you forgot “thuggery”. That’s not what goes into a DWI, but anyone who’s being honest is forced to admit that it’s more than just “zaniness” that contributes to the Fulmer Cup standings.

20. If it doesn’t go into a DWI, why bring it up?

21. So DJ comes off academic suspension this summer to pull this? Someone needs to explain the term “hanging by a thread” to him.

22. Mysterious-

What you term padding stats is what I call doing his job.

23. This is a significant loss of potential, but a very limited loss in terms of actual production. Just hope the kid manages to get his act together before we cut the cord (which we are generally quick to do).

24. Someone needs to intordruce DJ to Romance….keep this up they will be playing together in a Hungarian arena football league

25. I gotta agree with you Mysterious…instead of being revenue raisers, cops should serve the public like they did way back when. Like if their not that drunk follow the guy home.

26. Tdiddle -

For God’s sake. DWI isn’t jaywalking. It kills people on the roads. Affixing a penalty to it to underscore its seriousness isn’t harshing anyone’s existence.

DJ is a big boy who can walk home from 6th street. He gets to own up to his mistake.

27. In fairness, Hays Co. is a pretty far walk for DJ.

Ah fuck it, I’ve seen him run. He could do it in ~6 minutes.

Boys (young & old) the rules changed YEARS ago and they’re not going to change back to 1985 when my State Trooper buds would scold me and tell my girlfriend to drive me home. (Not proud of that, by the way).
Mysterious – I’ve known several rich WHITE folks who learned this lesson the hard way too.
Different era, different game..

29. What? There is a double standard for athletes? Bullshit.

30. Somewhere Brian Davis is smiling.

31. Somewhere Brian Davis needs to do his fucking job.

32. Scip, what’s the ND talk like up there today?

33. According to MADD, close to 12,000 of your fellow citizens took a dirt nap due to alcohol related wrecks in 2008. Roughly 3 in 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol related crash at some point in your lives. This is not some live and let live crime.

http://www.madd.org/Drunk-Driving/Drunk-Driving/Statistics.aspx

34. I read in the comments on the Statesman board than the other passenger in DJ’s car was busted for possession with intent to deliver. Anyone got the scoop on that?

35. Sinless1-

Well, if true, looks like Sam Houston St. could be getting a new kick returner in the very near future.

36. The only way I can pretend this was a case of DJ getting shafted is if he blew something significantly less than .08 …

But the co-pilot having enough grass to be charged with intent to distribute (2 ounces?) makes me suspect DJ and further validates the police officer. How disappointing. I really wanted to see a 3rd kick returned for a TD.

Bates Im sure you can make a good point, but quoting MADD may not be the best way to defend your position. Thats like supporting Greg Davis based on facts* from echeese. Point being both have a pretty biased agenda. MADD takes a zero tolerance stance that is out of touch with the way most Americans view the situation. Why dont we just quote PETA everytime someone sees a stray cat.

38. Mer -

Scip, what’s the ND talk like up there today?

I think you’re wanting Peter Bean’s perspective from BON. I live in California. He’s in South Bend.

Mysterious –

I do agree with you on MADD. I just think the whole “if he were white he’d be let go” take is silly.

39. Mysterious Package said:

Agreed. Didn’t mean to phrase it that way and to think he didn’t get the benifit because he is a Longhorn football player is reaching. I was just stating a concern that I hope that wasn’t the case. There seems to be more to this, like who he was with? Just not a good situation and it is getting more difficult to defend him.

40. I’m normally into the “tongue in cheek” talk here as much as the next guy, but DWI is nothing to joke about.

A lot of innocent people die because others get drunk, then get behind a wheel. DWI’s a lot more serious than 40 in a 30 zone, etc. The officer that busted Monroe did what he should have done, and so did Mack, by moving quickly to suspend Monroe indefinitely.

This isn’t to rain on anybody’s parade. It’s hoped that Monroe will get the chance, down the road, to work his way out of the doghouse. However, for those who think he should have gotten a hall pass for being stupid in a no stupid zone, lose somone you care about to a drunk driver, and you’ll look at things differently.

41. Because dead people are, well, dead. Kinda tough for MADD to monkey around with that number.

Since you appear impaired yourself, I’ll google it for you:

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811016.PDF

These numbers are for 2007.

42. And for the record, I tend to agree that MADD’s position is zero tolerance, but the dramatic drop in Alcohol related fatalities is due to a number of reasons, including improved safety equipment in automobiles, but zero tolerance enforcement by the nation’s police is also a factor. Trust me, the MADD mom’s definitely killed my buzz in high school, but they made an impression. ONce you’ve seen your dead buddy’s mom breakdown on the school stage, it’ll straighten your shit out.

43. Mysterious Package said:

November 16th, 2009 at 11:21 am

False assumption on your part. A family member has been directly impacted by a drunk driver. I’ve seen MADD at work and even I questioned their role in the whole deal. So please dont lecture me on my impaired judgment.

44. Suspended indefinitely. Ship will get to return KO’s again.

Barnes’ three “strengths”:

Defense, rebounding, recruiting.

This team just proved the first two are non-existent (out-rebounded by 25; fucking KIDDING me?) and the last one is over-hyped as well. Every ESPN basketball recruiting analyst who actually had Bradley ahead of Wall should be taken out back and executed Inglourious Basterds style.

Egg, that’s fine, but at what point do you blame Barnes? Seriously, man. You’ve thrown players under the bus left and right, but at a certain point, doesn’t the buck stop somewhere. I know you’re more of an NBA guy so it begins and ends with players there, but we need fucking

Trips,

I hear ya. I’m frustrated as well. I guess I just don’t prescribe to such a black and white characterization of the situation. I do know that no matter what happened in the huddle, JCB made a dumb play. If Rick didn’t explain or remind him of the situation, then I

Pat, know I don’t, but I’ve had coaches draw up plays to free up the best foul shooter and then tell that guy they’d put their foot up his ass if they passed the ball. It’s funny, but as a fans of football we nitpick blitz pickup and shit like that. Shit that’s

Trips,

Do you know that he didn’t? JCB has made bad decision all season, why would this be any different. Barnes coached a shitastic game, but on the teams I was the best FT shooter, I never game up the ball unless it was an uncontested layup…..It’s not hard and it doesn’t take a

• Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   6 hours, 49 minutes ago

mcpayne, yes, you don’t leave that shit to chance. You don’t let your guys break the huddle or dead ball not knowing precisely what’s expected from them. Barnes doesn’t get 2 mil for coaching PE where he’s hoping the right guy gets fouled.

• uthookem commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   6 hours, 50 minutes ago

mpayne, I’d agree with you if J’Covan had been playing all season and had been in situations to make that decision. Like, you know, against Baylor, when he played all of 3 fucking minutes thanks to rick.

So yes, it is rick’s fault.

• Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   6 hours, 51 minutes ago

With 15 seconds left, out of a dead ball, most coaches would make it perfectly clear who they wanted to be fouled.

Stupid decisions by Brown are one of the reasons he sat on the bench for most of the season…lack of coaching maybe, or just a lack of basketball IQ?

Oh well, if Brown doesn’t go off in the 2nd half, we aren’t even playing in OT. Too bad he didn’t get much of a chance

• Trips Right commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   6 hours, 54 minutes ago

Pat, if you were making 2 million a year, would you leave that up to chance?

• Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   6 hours, 55 minutes ago

Actually, if your a PG and the best FT shooter on the team and played basketball your entire life, you’d pretty much know not to give up the ball if you had any brains…..Such a dumb play…..

• D W commented on the blog post Texas Hoops vs. Wake Forest Open thread   6 hours, 56 minutes ago

Oh, and a stupid decision by Brown in giving up the ball to Johnson.

Fuck Rick Barnes, as this was the worst coaching I have seen in all my years of watching UT sports.
