September 18, 2010 at Texas Tech

Posted by HenryJames on November 12th, 2009 under Football

So Texas Tech released their 2010 football schedule yesterday, and typically no one cares outside of the American Legion post in Lamesa. But then there was this:

One of the highest viewer-rated games in ABC history, the 2008 home game against Texas is continuing to pay dividends. The game was moved ahead in the schedule this season to provide the network an attractive early-season Big 12 game, and the same has been done in 2010. The Red Raiders’ annual rivalry with the Longhorns will kick off on either ABC or ESPN on Sept. 18 at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Smart move by the networks. Better to catch Tech when they’re undefeated than later in the season when they’ve regressed to their 5-3 mean.

However.

Texas already has a home game scheduled against UCLA on that date, and when this was mentioned to Mack Brown at his press conference yesterday he seemed to believe that the Tech game hadn’t been finalized.

From Mack’s site:

“What I have been told is that they’re looking at the change next year, but it has not been finalized from our standpoint at all.”

What you’ve been told? You’re the head coach. Tech must believe it to be so because they just released it officially. And they’re a first class athletic department. Ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha!

Brown probably owes his job to UCLA, but we need to keep them on the schedule because we owe those guys. Big.

  1. Mack will not want us to face UCLA & Tech back to back so early in the season. He also wouldn’t want UCLA game pushed to later in the season when we just got done with a murderer’s row of BIG XII teams. My guess is we push the game back to another year. SUCKS!

I think we’ll be great next year, but Gilbert will have some of a learning curve. I do NOT want to play such good teams so early in the slate. If we can push UCLA to later in the year, I’m all for it.

  2. No f’ing way the UCLA game is dropped.

I am hopeful the Tech game is early though, that would be fun again.

If they move the UCLA game to later in the year, that kind of sucks for us. The heat always helps.

  3. This was brought up on local squawk yesterday with a guy who covers Tech. He said it wasn’t final but the Tech schedule page was mentioned because Tech now finishes its conference schedule on November 13 and closes the season with two n-c games, Weber State (replacing TCU) and UH.

As part of the deal, TCU supposedly is playing UCLA on the 18th. But nothing’s been said about the Texas game concerning a change of date or pushing back the game. Looking at the schedule, it could be the 20th of November if Arizona State can juggle its schedule (as ASU is supposed to play UCLA that weekend). The only school that has announced its change is Tech.

interesting dilemma. I would prefer not having the conference schedule interrupted by a date w/ a difficult non-con.

I can’t see how this benefits Tech’s chances of actually winning the game. They seem to start as slow as anyone in the conference, and do they really want to be (theoretically) two games behind the presumed division favorite before conference play even really gets going?

  5. I don’t know if that image is real or not, but it’s hilarious. “We’re big time! We promise!”

  6. How many times does HenryJames get to use the patented Cooper laugh in his own posts before eliciting a C&D from Cooper Industrique legal department?

  7. Tim says we’re lucky because Tech is the best team in the country in November.

  8. I don’t get it. Swapping dates gives the Big 12 a good game for TV in September, but is TT/UT really more attractive than UT/UCLA? And dropping TT/TCU takes a good TV game away, as does dropping UT/UCLA, if it isn’t rescheduled to another date in 2010. What is driving this?

  9. There is something f-ed up in Lubbock, but we all already knew that. Today’s FWST questioned the Tech schedule not having TCU on there.

    http://www.star-telegram.com/856/story/1755731.html

For a team currently ranked No. 4 in the country, TCU sure isn’t being shown any respect from Lubbock.

A 2010 “unofficial schedule” for Texas Tech briefly appeared on the Red Raiders’ athletic Web site Wednesday, showing Tech playing Texas Sept. 18, the date the Horned Frogs are supposedly playing the Red Raiders in Lubbock.

No one from TCU would comment, but Tech athletic director Gerald Myers tried to smooth things over late Wednesday.

“That schedule is really unofficial,” Myers said. “We’ve still got some work to do on that. We don’t have the contracts signed for a couple of those games. We just inadvertently got that up on our Web site.”

Myers said Tech’s four-game contract with TCU will be honored, even if it’s delayed a season. The contract is for a 2004 game in Lubbock, a 2006 game in Fort Worth and games in 2010 and 2011 (Fort Worth).

“I haven’t talked to the TCU AD,” Myers said. “We’re going to play them. Whether it’s next year or beyond, I can’t say at this point. The game will be played. We’re not canceling any games.”

Meanwhile, Texas media relations director John Bianco said any announcement was premature. Texas is already scheduled to host UCLA on Sept. 18, 2010.

“It has been discussed,” Bianco said of a schedule change. “But it’s far from a done deal.”

  10. To accommodate the ABC or ESPN broadcast of the Texas game, a previously scheduled game against TCU will be moved back to a future schedule.

TCU wants nothing to do with this. They are returning 16 starters off of this years squad and want to go to Lubbock next September.

  11. Sacred Bovine! Here is what Myers said in the intial press release noted above:

On Wednesday, Texas Tech officially announced its schedule for next season.

“We are pleased with how this schedule fell into place,” Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers said. “We were able to work some things out with our league schedule to accommodate a network opportunity, while also bringing our fans an attractive non-conference schedule as well.”

    W?
    T?
    F?

  12. CTJ, I don’t know that JJF@DKR-MS has ever been hotter than it was during 66-3.

I don’t dispute that the September heat will likely be more helpful next year than it was on that day over Macho Grande.

But I don’t think I’ll ever get over Macho Grande…

  13. Extra points for the Cooper laugh.

  14. I guess we should view the schedule they released as their basis for negotiations.

  15. We can play them both, The “A” team can play UCLA and the “B” team can play TT.

  16. Is there anything preventing DeLoss from saying “Thanks but no thanks. Our most attractive non-conference game in years is already scheduled for that date”?

  17. Nice. I don’t want to be playing a Greg Davis offense once he’s had a chance to get things clicking. Ha ha ha ha!

  18. Mike Leach just banned Twitter again.

“I guess we should view the schedule they released as their basis for negotiations.”

Why would Tech do this instead of sending in their crack negotiating team of Leach, Crabtree & Cousin.

  20. “That schedule is really unofficial,” Myers said. “We’ve still got some work to do on that. We don’t have the contracts signed for a couple of those games. We just inadvertently got that up on our Web site.”

The threat level was raised from “sort of unofficial” to “really unofficial” when fairies, wizards, and pirates somehow got said schedule on this innernet business.

    God, Myers is a retard.

I’m sure I’ll take the heat for this one as well.

  22. Interesting to say the least. While the timing of this years TTU v. UT game benefitted Texas, because it was Pott’s first road start. I have got to think moving the game to September will benefit Tech because it will be Gilberts first start. It will be interesting to see what the UT defense looks like in September without Kindle and Houston.

Apparently, when Leach was in Bristol for his “car wash” ESPN discussed another September game between UT vs. TTU. This is more of an ABC/ESPN thing than it is a Texas Tech/UT thing. History has shown that what ESPN wants, ESPN gets.

  23. The contract is for a 2004 game in Lubbock, a 2006 game in Fort Worth and games in 2010 and 2011 (Fort Worth).

So if I understand this right. Tech agreed to a one home game for three road games swap with a WAC team? Either that quote is wrong or Tech’s scheduler is the biggest moron I’ve ever seen.

Even Wyoming got a better deal from us.

  24. “This is more of an ABC/ESPN thing than it is a Texas Tech/UT thing.”

Tard Tim trying to group Texas in on this…what an idiot.

Texas will never give a shit about Texas Tech.

Looks like we may move the Florida Atlantic game to Nov. 20th so that we have this:
    At Rice Sept. 4
    Wyoming Sept. 11
    At Texas Tech Sept. 18
    UCLA on Sept. 25

  27. USC sucks balls this year and they’re ranked 11th. UCLA isn’t even getting a single vote in the AP. Texas could play SC and TT back to back and be ok, fuck the UCLA angst. May as well push Gilbert into the deep end early anyway, I think the kid has what it takes to rise to the occasion, and we’ll still have a Muschamp coached D to back him up.

And Tim, everybody wondered how our defense would get along without Orakpo. We’ve managed. We’r going to have a more experienced secondary next year than what we have now. You’re fucked next year and probably the next 6 or 7 until your next scheduled upset.

  28. “It will be interesting to see what the UT defense looks like in September without Kindle and Houston.”

It will look a lot like the one this year only better.

Not everyone out here loves the move. It sounds like Gerald wants to push Texas and TCU around by going public with the deal. Let’s see how that works out for him!

    Dear Tim,

Ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha!

  31. For a team that repeatedly swears they don’t give a shit about tech, you sure seem to give a shit about tech.

As a tech alum, I’m pissed about the TCU swap, but that’s counterbalanced by the early game with UT: your season next year is over before a snap. That makes me happy.

  32. I like the legion in Lamesa, much classier than O’Donnell

  33. Looks like Gerald Myers got caught talking out of his ass again, just like he did with Leach’s contract.

I personally don’t think there is any way in hell DeLoss agrees to move the UCLA game to accomodate Tech, especially given Gilbert’s inexperience. They’ll want him to get some seasoning before playing a conference game in a crackerbox. We don’t need money that bad. So fuck GM and his manipulative public relations fiascos.

  34. “As a tech alum, I’m pissed about the TCU swap, but that’s counterbalanced by the early game with UT: your season next year is over before a snap. That makes me happy.”

That’s an awful lot of confidence from a team that lost at home to A&M by 20+ points recently. We beat you this year without an offense so why would next year be any differently?

If Gilbert is still inexperienced it will be a 10-17 point win. If he is in mid season form you lose by 27-31.

Either way, you lose. But you should be used to that feeling by now.

  35. ucla is still on for the 18th. tech fcked up.

I have no qualms with playing UCLA and Tech early in the season. All of us on this board want Texas to play some exciting non-con games both for experience and BCS help, but now we don’t want to play UCLA? Give me a break. And while I am at it, if the UCLA game does get moved to the following year, I say bring Boise State down to Austin in our open date and show them a good ol’ time.

  38. UCLA these days is pretty much Colorado. I don’t see why anyone would be concerned about playing them early.

  39. UCLA was at least wise enough to turn away that cheesedick Darell Scott. So they got that going for them.

“And while I am at it, if the UCLA game does get moved to the following year, I say bring Boise State down to Austin in our open date and show them a good ol’ time.”

I like your style. This is why I’m am pissed that Tech isn’t going to play TCU. instead we get the fierce Weber St. Way to aim high Gerald!

I dont think that Texas will field a team next year that is capable of beating Tech by 27-31. That is some overconfidence for sure. Not saying they’ll win, but come on…. And “Either way, you lose. But you should be used to that feeling by now.” seriously? Tech lost by 10 this year and won last year. and no, i dont remember anything past 2 years.

  41. The Red Raiders’ annual rivalry with the Longhorns will kick off on either ABC or ESPN on Sept. 18 at Jones AT&T Stadium.

“annual rivalry”? What the hell does that mean? Does it only become a rivalry once a year? It gets “kicked off” each year?

It’s ridiculous enough that Tech thinks they are Texas’ rivals, but it’s even more hilarious that they don’t know how to use the word in a sentence.

  42. O Henry! You sho’ am dumb! You owe everyone big, don’t you?
Don’t you realize how much they all owe you? : )

  43. “The Red Raiders’ annual rivalry with the Longhorns”

    What rivalry?
