Texas, Tennessee Top Pay List for Assistants

Posted by srr50 on November 10th, 2009 under Football

USA Today is running series on coaches salaries in D-1 football this week, and according to the national daily, Texas and Tennessee have the biggest budgets for football assistants.

Tennessee’s nine assistants earn an average of more than $369,000; Texas’ better than $327,000.

The paper used freedom-of-information laws to cull numbers from many D-1 schools. Most of the private schools and some public didn’t release their contracts for various reasons.

The figures reveal that the pay scale for both head coaches and their assistants has been rising at a record rate. There are at least 25 head coaches making more than $2 million, while 66 football assistants are making at least $300,000.

As might be expected, the SEC leads the way in total compensation for its coaching staffs, while the Big 12 is also spending more freely than others when it comes to assitant coaches.

Of the 60-plus assistants USA TODAY found making $300,000 or more this season, 29 are in the SEC and 15 in the Big 12.

Three head coaches are making at least $4 milliion: Peter Carroll (4.4) Bob Stoops ($4.3) and Urban Meyer ($4.0).

Will Muschamp is among the Top 3 paid assistants in college football.

Tennessee has two of the highest-paid assistants, Defensive Coordinater Monte Kiffin at $1.2 million, and Ed Orgeron at $650,000. Texas Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp is in between the Vols duo at $900,000.

As the fiscal “arms race” in BCS football continues, the SEC continues to find itself dealing from a position of strength. Right now the Big 12 is closest to the SEC in terms of total compensation.

On average, the SEC schools are paying their head coaches $2.64 million this season ( Vanderbilt’s Bobby Johnson’s contract wasn’t made public).

Big 12 coaches average almost $2.1 million, led by Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops at $4.3 million, followed by Mack Brown’s $3 million.

The median salary in the SEC is Houston Nutt’s $2.5 million at Mississippi.

The median salary in the Big 12 is Kansas State’s Bill Snyder at $1.85 million.

There are nine head coaches making at least $2 million in the SEC, compared to five in the Big 12. Dan Mullen at Mississippi State is the lowest paid head coach in the SEC at $1.2 million. Meanwhile two coaches in the Big 12, Paul Rhoads at Iowa State and Baylor’s Art Briles make less than $1 million.

This is just the first year of the multi-billion dollar deal with SEC and its media partners ESPN/CBS, and the cash flow will help that league continue to be at the top of the compensation scale. It will also make it easer for SEC programs to make their mistakes go away.

A quick look at the breakdown between the Big 12 North and the Big 12 South points to the disparity of play on the field continuing in the near future.

In terms of total compensation for coaches, the Big 12 South is spending on average in salaries $5 million for its coaching staffs. The Big 12 North, on average is spending $3.5 million on its football staffs.

One caveat, Baylor does not report any numbers for its assistants, but if you plug in the least amount spent by any Big 12 team, the South would still average $4.5 million in compensation.

  3. If Stoops earns around 360K per game, that makes his field goal versus NU pay out at a cool $120,000 per point.

But only UT clears 30+ million in profit each year from its football program. Suckers.

  6. Kiffin’s wife is very shiny. My wife is hot, but not that shiny.

  7. Did you try olive oil?

  8. I find it both exciting and hopeful that the SEC is applying this kind of pressure to the rest of the college football world. It puts the world on tilt for everyone else and they will eventually be forced to react. Texas, for one, isn’t going to sit around and shoulder things for the rest of the Big 12 into perpetuity. My guess is less than 5 years transpire between now and massive realignment, if not sooner.

Change won’t happen like water over a rock, but like lightning through a tree when it comes on this issue. I am rooting for a move to the Super PAC 10 with TAMU, BYU, and Utah, personally. Throw in the Okie teams or Colorado teams if you need a clean 16 for the conference. More likely, the okies, Nebraska, and USF join the SEC. Awesome.

If that is all fantasy, don’t wake me from it, srr. I just don’t see how the imbalance persists for too long, though.

  9. Nothing some KY won’t fix.

  10. If that is all fantasy, don’t wake me from it, srr

My fantasy includes the current negotiations between comcast and NBC leading to a real competitor with ESPN, which might speed up the process as well. They would be looking for premium programming and a couple of “superconferenes” to duel with the SEC might be just the ticket.

  11. Well, if they are, they need to get on with it before WWL locks so much down that an alternative ends up looking like Fox Business.

  12. Does Orgeron’s salary include or not include the money needed for handlers?

  13. Did you try olive oil?

  14. Is Fat Madden making above or below our average of 327K? I think it’s slightly south of that #.

  15. “Did you try olive oil?”

You shittin’ me? I banged her like a screen door in a hurricane. And I was strong to the finish ’cause I ate me spinach.

And yes, it appears JoPo wrote pretty much the same thing. It’s hard to believe with all the national talking heads, fans, and everyone in between saying otherwise, but I think it’s the only conclusion to draw for anyone that really watched this team.

Normally, after a big win or a crushing defeat, I don’t know what to think, say, or feel, because I can’t. And that what makes this one different; it’s just as painful, but I saw it coming. Instead of getting blindsided by the oncoming traffic, I was able to brace myself for the

I’m with you the off season is already old. I’m ready for the season to start. NDS I am completely fascinated by the Tech vs. Lech business. I can’t believe they ran off the guy that put them on the map and subsequently ended up with an arguable upgrade in Tubs.

Ded 9-12 wins is pretty optomistic. I like it. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Tubs can do with them this year especially on D. I’m surprised you think the QB battle between Sticks and Nick will be close. Interesting, I figured Sticks was a runaway. I hope Corndog

Got a little time this morning and I’m rearing to talk some football.  Here’s what the depth chart looks like headed into spring and a few thoughts:

    Offense

QB  Sr. Taylor Potts/Sr. Steven Sheffield – We’ve all annointed Sheffield as the starter, and I think that’s the case if we continue to run 99% of our snaps

Wangmene is ‘Manos de Piedra’ redux, so that was really never going to work out.

This would probably go a bit better if you read it in your Bobby Knight voice and it had two decades worth of goodwill built up from its gratuitous appearance on a popular late night television show. But oh well.

Today reminded me why I love this tournament so much. A good friend of mine mentioned to me that college basketball is the great equalizer of all athletic endeavors. At least of the sports we care about. He’s right.

Unless you’re completely retarded, you know precisely what I meant. The closest any Big 12 team has gotten to winning the infamous Fuller Cup is the 2007 Texas squad. I can’t remember a team being that horribly undisciplined as a whole aside from the insane OU teams of the 80’s. That’s not

I suppose anyone could be your “favorite Longhorn basketball player” but Ford did more than just about anyone…although Durant is clearly better. Ford’s supporting cast was better than Durant’s in his sophomore year. Durant’s had more talent (Augustin, James, Abrams) but Ford’s was more developed (Boddicker, Ivey, Mouton, Thomas) and had worked with him for

This notion of Hamilton as being a disaster area on defense is all a bit much. He rebounds extremely well which, if it wasn’t obvious, is extremely important in this game since it secures possession of the basketball. Winning in basketball is achieved through the scoring of baskets and it’s necessary to possess the basketball

I posted earlier about how Collins’ effort just crippled Kansas today, but what amazed me the most was his complete inability to stay in front of his man on defense. UNI got a LOT of good looks out of penetration/pass after one of UNI’s modestly gifted athletes blew right by Sherron. The best
