No Excuses

Posted by HenryJames on November 10th, 2009 under Football

Looks like Bob Stoops is feeling the heat.

On if the offensive coaching staff should be off limits to criticism because of their success in 2008:

“We’re never off limits. Shoot, we all know that. So no, in the end, we’ll all be criticized. You’re only as good as your last game. that’s how it goes. All of us in this profession are very aware of that. In the end, they’ve had a lot to juggle through the year. Defensively, we’ve had one injury. All the other ones have been to the offense. So they’ve had a lot to juggle, and certain parts of the year, they’ve managed it well, other times we haven’t. I think as much of anything, some of the discipline issues when you look at penalties, to me, are issues with our players that need to make improvement there.”

On the perception that when things go wrong, the players are blamed:

“Here’s the problem with that: don’t ask us questions, then. You want to ask me what went wrong, I’m supposed to say, ‘Well, everything’s our fault?’ Then I can’t answer the question if you want me to answer it truthfully. You know, if a guy can’t go when (the snap count) is on 1, what am I to do? There are some things that are our fault, always. And there are some things that players gotta handle, too. Something you prepare for all week and you don’t handle it, well, who’s fault is that? And it’s always gonna be both of us.

“So don’t ask a question if you don’t want the right answer. And don’t go criticizing if we give you the right answer and it is on them. As you said, you’re fair, criticize us. Because ultimately, we’ve got to get ‘em to do it right. In the end, it’s always the two of you. End of story, and it’ll be that way — it’ll be that way until they quit playing football.”

  1. That’s fantastic.

  2. No OU coach, not Wilkinson, not Switzer could avoid the heat for losing 4 out of 5 to Texas, no matter how many championship skins were on the wall.

Stoops is just next in line, and while he may have enough chips in the bank to withstand any real pressure from those who count, it sure is fun to see him squirm when the riff raff get after him.

If a guy can’t get the snap count right you replace him with someone who can. It is on the coach. If you don’t have a backup that can get it right then it’s on the coach as well. He is the one who recruits these players. The fact that Stoops doesn’t understand this is his major weakness and we are seeing it right before our eyes. It will be a fun couple of years to watch this unraveling. The cracks are beginning to show.

  4. srr50, if Stoops had won even ONE of those last three trips to the BCS title game in 2003, 2004, or 2008 (particularly 2008), he most certainly could avoid the heat. It’s not just losing to Texas, it’s that fact COMBINED with the choke jobs in BCS games that’s got the fire turned up to 11.

  5. “what you see on the film – that’s what you coached”

  6. exactly, Bartoncreek. also, a lot of that is giving your young guys playing time when games are no longer in doubt — something Stoops is known not to do, and Mack does.

I ‘d just tell those reporters to gfts and remind them that I am packing..

  8. More fun than a barrel of monkeys, I tell ya!

  9. After one excellent thread title today, HJ comes back and lays an egg. This thread should have been titled “Know Excuses”.

  10. Not HJ’s fault. I posted it for him.

HJ’s title involved players and buses.

Plus, Trips already used that one here:

    http://barkingcarnival.fantake.com/2009/05/25/bob-stoops-know-excuses/

  11. Still outsourcing most of his work I see.

  12. Let this be a lesson to you all. You should believe in me.

  13. Let’s play a little game called “Who said it?”

    First up:

“It’s mostly everybody’s fault. Could we have blocked em better? Sure. Could we have put our eyes in the right place? Sure. Could *unnamed player* have pulled it on the read one time? Sure. Could I have gotten us in a better play? Sure. So you can’t just point to one area.”

Did Bob have “Margaret The Reporter” turn around and face the back wall??

  17. i hope stoops remains the OU coach for a long, long time. jackass that he is, he’s fun to hate and starting to show that he’s either lost his touch or never had it.

    OU sucks.

Last week I asked Sailor Ripley and friends to come over and share some of their knowledge in our corner of the internet. As you can tell, I didn’t have the money to ship the 6 cases of Old English 800 to Fan Take world headquarters that they demanded so we’re stuck with links.

He needs help with the X and 0’s of offense and needs to be more open to zone principles if he doesn’t have the perimeter personnel to play man2man.

All the rest of the stuff will take care of itself with wins. I’m watching the Big12 championship right now and no one’s saying Frank Martin

I could not agree more about the subject. You have to make the pass go somewhere else than the offense wants. If you can’t stop that, you have to change the angle of the pass. Anything to throw them off.

I said after Laettner’s shot and pretty much ever since, that guarding the inbounder should be
