Earl Thomas a Thorpe Award semi-finalist

Posted by HenryJames on November 4th, 2009 under Football

Earl Thomas is one of 12 semi-finalists for the award given to the nation’s best defensive back. He’ll definitely be one of the three finalists, and he should win it. Doesn’t hurt that he makes highlight plays each week.

His main competition will come from Tennessee’s Eric Berry and Florida’s Joe Haden.

  1. HJ,

I haven’t watched much of Tennessee this year, but won’t it be really hard for Earl to unseat Berry? Or has Berry been invisible this year?

  2. Berry is a freak. Earl benefits from playing on a team that has a real shot at playing for it all. If Berry played Tebow every week, he’d win it.

  3. “If Berry played Tebow every week, he’d win it.”

I’m not so sure about that. Berry might get to him the first two games, but I’d be willing to bet Tebow would be be practically immortal by the third game.

Berry is playing very well, and he is likely to get it again. He is a great player abd deserves it. That said, it will belong to Earl for the next year or hopefully two if he sticks around.

  5. Berry is in a new defense, and his stats are not as good. He’s still a great player, but he went from seven interceptions as a sophomore to one this year. He’s playing much closer to the LOS this year from the little I’ve watched Tennessee.

Last year’s Eric Berry is this year’s Earl Thomas.

  6. That collision those two had earlier in the year was severe. This sort of play being repeated accompanied by the groans of Verne Lundquist and the libidinous mutterings of Gary Danielson would make him a shoe in.

  7. I’m sure Kiffin Sr took a look at the SEC passing games and decided he wasn’t going to waste his best defensive player in coverage.

  8. Just to be clear, in one of the worst tragic award selections in the past decade (on par with Pollack over DJ, Bush over Vince), Malcolm Jenkins won the Thorpe award last year over Eric Berry. That shows that it can be a career award or just give it to the best senior award and therefore screw Earl over. I love Berry but Earl has been the best DB in the country this year.

  9. But Taylor Mays plays for USC!

Soes anyone have the complete list?

I don’t know if he’ll be a finalist or not. He should be. But this kind of thing is always so ridiculous about expectations coming into a season that I find it hard to discount the concept of Berry or Mays winning it on name more than anything.

I’ve seen Berry a lot this year and he continues to change games. He’s ridiculous. He is being asked to do different things this year, however.

  12. Berry is an unbelievable college football player–think Michale Huff, 2005, with a worse supporting class. It is his award to lose and he would get my vote even over one of my favorite Longhorns.

    However…

Earl Thomas with 10 interceptions? a la Dre Bly?

Now that would be a tough stat to ignore. Wonder how close he gets?

    The 2009 semi-finalists are:

    Javier Arenas, Sr., Alabama
    Eric Berry, Jr., Tennessee
    Barry Church, Sr., Toledo
    Perrish Cox, Sr., Oklahoma State
    Joe Haden, Jr., Florida
    Brandon Harris, So., Miami (FL)
    Taylor Mays, Sr., USC
    Tyler Sash, So., Iowa
    Darrell Stuckey, Sr., Kansas
    Earl Thomas, So., Texas
    Alterraun Verner, Sr., UCLA
    Kyle Wilson, Sr., Boise State

  14. Isn’t Alterraun Verner a famous botanist?

  15. I believe Berry’s one interception was against His Holiness himself. Not quite walking on water but maybe turning water into grape juice.

It will come down to who the WWL hypes.

  16. “Isn’t Alterraun Verner a famous botanist?”

No – he’s a Senator from Coruscant in the Outer Rim.

  17. Mays will not win it.

  18. [...] Along with Florida’s Joe Haden and Tennessee’s Eric Berry. As I predicted. [...]

I agreed this is a great draw for us. Notre Dame, from what I can tell is a solid well coached squad and we will have a hard time beating them. Our fans, for the most part, are overlooking them because they were somewhat on the bubble, but look what they did in

Patrick, from a personality standpoint Clausen isn’t exactly likeable. I think the perception of him having leadership or other intangible issues is really tied to the fact that many people just don’t like the kid. The same discussion went on to some degree amongst the ND fan base his 1st two seasons.

So Scipio did a great job on introducing us to our ACC counterpart and robbing me of an easy morning column. A great read though, it sounds like they are in Texas’ wheelhouse since it isn’t at Wake. You can see the whole bracket here.

Obviously Kentucky is the 2nd opponent and I don’t think there’s

Lazy humans and no brand to fall back on. I don’t think Duke is the third best team by any stretch but what are you going to do.

Good catch, Primetime. I’m fairly certain he just confused Rolle with DRC. Or maybe he confused Antonio Cromartie with DRC.

I realize your a ND fan, but what makes you so confident in Claussen? He had a very good season, but what about his leadership skills or lack thereof?

As Dr. John so eloquently put it, we are going on down to New Orleans. (Yes, I realize that the song is going home to New Orleans…I don’t care.)

The Cotton Bowl is a really cool venue. It was a bummer watching them play that game at Jerry’s house this year. I hope the new game comes to fruition. Nice counter on Bosworth. I never personally cared for “The Boz” persona but in retrospect I’ll say that was really pretty

What happens when a stoppable force meets a movable object?

We’ll find out on March 18th. Meet Wake Forest.

This game will be watching drunks trying to brawl. Neither belligerent will land a punch, and it will be viewed by both fanbases with equal measures of horror, embarassment, and amusement.

He really screwed himself. We probably would have won two more games with him. He was more worried about the “devil’s lettuce” than developing into a solid back. Pathetic.

I have been thinking that the team quit on Barnes some time during the last 14-15 games.

Marquette line really surprises me. I like Washington and normally I would be impressed with a conference tourney winner but that falls under the Pac 10 sucks rule to me. I would have liked to see Washington lined up against a different 6 seed.

Call me crazy but I would prefer to face OSU over any of the other three 2 seeds. They basically lost to Michigan (who truly sucks) on Friday, played Illinois even yesterday and beat an exhausted Minnesota team today. They aren’t exactly on fire. As for the other #2’s, I have no interest in playing

Utah State can really shoot it. They’re the top 3 point shooting team in America. But they struggle against quicker athletes and can be banged inside. the big 12 isn’t getting a lot of credit so the line is short, imo

I posted my picks, but as you stated Richmond looks like easy money.

I think Purdue is a shell and Siena is experienced, athletic and talented. Saints roll.

I’m fading Gonzaga and St Mary’s. Zero athletes on those clubs.

I”m also fading Michigan State with NMSU. They’ll be able to get shots against
