Big 12 Football: Rewarding Mediocrity

Posted by HenryJames on November 3rd, 2009 under Football

The Big 12 wants to reward mediocrity.

The Big 12 commissioner, Dan Beebe, has come up with a proposal that would allow 6-6 teams to be treated the same as teams with winning records when it comes to bowl games. Hasn’t he already rewarded mediocrity enough by allowing a team from the North to play in the Conference Championship game?

Under the current system, teams who lose as many games as they win don’t go to bowls unless their conference has a bowl tie-in and all teams with winning records have been invited to the post season. Which is the way it should be in the United States of America.

“This isn’t Russia. Is this Russia? This isn’t Russia.”

If it were up to Beebe, those exceptions would be eliminated and .500 teams could be invited to bowls immediately. Which would make for an even more exciting bowl season. If you live in Lawrence, Kansas. And it’s an open date for the basketball team.

  1. Come on now, keep it above the belt.

  2. I’m so glad we have this system in place, as opposed to one that determines a national champion.

  3. This registers about 0.0000005 on my give a shit register (1-10 scale) now that we have Pasadena squarely in our sights.

  4. Dude’s just trying to make more money for the Big 12 isn’t he?

  5. What happens when the south winner inevitably plays a 6-6 north winner? Can Beebe then mandate that a 6-7 division champion MUST GO BOWLING!?

That’s a sweet hard hat. Glad to see they’re protecting it by putting Bebee under it.

Who cares. More college football is more college football.

  8. More bad college football is more bad college football.

  9. this is bebee’s genius response to the new SEC television contract…go get us some revenue, Dan!

  10. Hardly his fault. It’s the NCAA’s fault, for having so many f’ing bowls. The fact that any 6-6 team gets to go to a bowl is ridiculous. There’s no prestige in bowls anymore. So the Big 12 can hardly be blamed for trying to get more of its teams in bowls (= more $$).

  11. Think of it as a patronage system if you will. The more schools indebted to the current bowl system, the less willing to support a playoff.

  12. No need to get your panties in wad here. Bowl games, regardless, of “prestige” are purely market driven. If the lower bowls don’t make money, they’d stop having so many of them. Having 100 more sucky bowl games is not going to diminish my interest in the major bowls. I just dont watch them, like I don’t watch 99% of what’s on tv.

  13. fadinglasvegas.com supports this decision!

  14. These games also guarantee that the SEC and the other BCS conferences will continue to water down the non-conference schedules. How else can the SEC fulfill its committment to 9 bowls.

  15. Dan Beebe needs to be fired. This is the same man who, after seeing the disaster that is the Big XII 3 way tie break system, left that intact.

  16. He also stripped the fumble from Leon Lett’s outstretched, celebratory hand.

  17. Based on what I read on Texags (always the gospel and a paragon of impartiality) Beebe has also proposed some changes to the BigXII schedule that would even out the matchups between the north and south – making sure that the cross divisional matchups take place at different times of the season.

On the face of it not much of a difference, but fairness dictates that A+M shouldn’t always have to play their games against Colorado in November (as they do currently). The new scheduling would mean that some years Colorado would have to play in College Station in September (for example).

I wish they weren’t playing Kentucky next. Same goes for #11 seed Washington having to play West Virginia.

Sucks that we are getting the two best teams left in the tourney playing in the Elite 8 possibly.

An already painful week turned excruciating for Carlo Ancelotti. With Leach at the wheel I was expecting a 10 win minimum season with the guys this team has coming back in 2010. Now with Tubbs, Willis, and Brown running the show I’m in agreement it’s anywhere between 9-12 wins this year.

    No Kalin Lucas?

    No problem.

    gotta,

I think your overall point is a good one. Barnes is a “system” guy especially defensively, which plays into how he overall plays the game. He wants to play a high pressure, overplay man2man scheme predicated on effort, good technique and overall quickness. Similar to Duke, but even Coach K (in fairness
