Brent & Bob Get Big 12 Big Monday Basketball

Posted by srr50 on October 29th, 2009 under Basketball

ESPN has apparently decided that the Big 12 is going to be so good in basketball this year that they are bringing in the “A” Team for the Big Monday Broadcasts.

Ron Franklin and Fran Fraschilla are out.

Brent Musberger and Bobby Knight are in.

ESPN said the decision was partly due to the increased workoad for Knight and the desire to have him work with Musberger, and partly due to the Big 12’s enhanced reputation for the upcoming year.

Ron Franklin will continue to work the Wednesday Big 12 games — with a variety of partners, while Fran Fraschilla, who lives in Dallas, will work the Big East Wednesday games. Franklin and Fraschilla will be back together for Big 12 Saturday telecasts.

Big 12 officials said all the right things, and are happy that at least the Franklin/Fraschilla duo won’t be totally cut out of the Big 12 picture.

Even the coaches appreciate the twosome.

Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon said, “When I think of the Big 12 and Big Monday, I think of Ron Franklin. As coaches, we appreciate his knowledge and professionalism. We are happy he will still be a big part of our league.”

Ron Franklin is the man. Bobby Knight, not so much.

  2. The only thing we can hope for is a Bareback Moment between Knight and Moistberger that suddenly explains years of chair throwing angst on ones side and faux folksiness garbage on the other.

  3. I will miss Fran quite a bit. I really enjoy his commentary. Not to mention his obvious good relationship with Coach Barnes and the ins that that brought the tv audience. That said, I like Coach Knight and am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Musberger over Franklin is enough to make me punch a loved one in the dick. Musberger is a piece of human garbage.

  4. Well, shit.

I just mentioned to my wife the other day how much I enjoy listening to Ron Franklin.

    Thanks ESPN fucktards!

  5. I’m sorry to say that Ron had lost his fastball. I think he’s been a great announcer and I think he’s a great guy, but…

  6. “I’m sorry to say that Ron had lost his fastball. I think he’s been a great announcer and I think he’s a great guy, but…”

Agree. Gotta think that 22 years of traveling on the road for ESPN will wear anyone down. Prior to that 20 years of broadcast news in Houston and Tulsa. That’s a lot of TV.

I grew up watching him do the news in Houston so he’s always going to be a favorite of mine.

  7. Ron, without his fastball, is still better than Musberger.

  8. Sweet Jesus this is horrible news. I’d take Ron & Fran with matching closed head injuries over Knight & Musburger on their best days.

  9. I’d take Ron & Fran without heads over Musberger/Knight. They could do the broadcast while singing songs from “Cop Rock” and I’d still enjoy them more than Musberger/Knight.

  10. I’d prefer Fran and Knight (i.e. no Franklin, no Musburger). Franklin irritates me ever since I noticed that he calls the aggies the “Texas aggies”. Musburger is a rust belt homer.

  11. Barnes is also good friends with Knight, so I’m sure he’ll also have extra insight when doing Texas games.

  12. I really like Knight the analyst. Brent’s attached to him at the hip. I can live with that.

  13. This is too bad. But on the bright side, Brent will always comment on the updated lines for us gamblers out there.

  14. I guess I’m in the minority here, but to me this is either a wash or good news.

My sentiment for Ron not withstanding, he’s seemed pretty lost for a few years now. Almost as if every game were his first. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big Musberger guy, but we haven’t been getting Ron Franklin lately.

And the real benefit is Knight over Fraschilla. Neither ever get to poignant during games, but at least Knight won’t analyze as if we’re all just hearing about this game called “basketball.”

Musburger is morphing into Beano Cook. Going to need a wider lens.

I like Fraschilla’s work. Don’t view this as an uptick.

  16. If Ron Franklin is like 2009 Pedro Martinez compared to 1999 Pedro Martinez, then Brent Musberger is like 2009 Brian Moehler compared to 1999 Brian Moehler.

  17. Watch it in a bar and whoever is announcing becomes inconsequential.

This year is going to be great entertainment but bad for the wallet, and liver.

IMO Fran is the best color guy in the biz, I love his insight into the Big 12. He knows stuff that I would never expect a commentator to know. Very impressive. Franklin is the voice of the Big 12. Musberger has always been talented but he’s just losing it now *Achoo, ’scuse me*. Knight talks to damn slow.

I actually spoke to Fran a couple weeks ago at a meeting we were both at and he said he will be doing Saturday Big XII games.

Ron Franklin might not be what he once was, which was the best play-by-play man in the biz, but he’s still light years ahead of Musberger. I cannot emphasize enough how much Brent annoys me, and always has. It reached its peak in football during Applewhite’s years as QB (”The MAAY-jor’s done it again, folks!”) but it has hardly abated as the years have gone by. I listen to him and I just want to rip his fucking larynx out. This is NOT an upgrade. I’ll be muting the TV and listening to Craig Way and I don’t care if there is a 2-3 second delay in the sync-up.

“If Ron Franklin is like 2009 Pedro Martinez compared to 1999 Pedro Martinez”

2009 Ron Franklin is more like 2009 Ramon Martinez.

  22. I cry blood when Musberger calls games. He would be better on radio where you aren’t seeing the opposite of what he’s saying. I now have “Holy Buck-eye!” stuck in my head. Thanks.

Ron loves the horns. He currently lives in Austin I always thought he was great. I agree he is the voice of the big 12. The best play-by-play out there. Knight and Bret will be good im sure but Franklin will always be my favorite.

Real question is: does EA replace Holly Rowe?

  25. Bob Knight is outstanding. He’s light years better than Fraschilla. Ron Franklin has been a sad shell of himself in basketball. Football he’s still fine in, but because basketball is played at a quicker pace, he does a horrible job of keeping up. Franklin has been great for UT over the years, and at one time he was an outstanding basketball play by play guy, but now he’s just downright awful.

That’s not to say I’m excited about Brent Musberger, because I’m absolutely not, but if he’s the price to pay to bring in Knight, it’s well worth it in my opinion.

Also, who is going to go to a sports bar for every Big Monday game? I might go if my team is playing in it, but I watch the Big Monday games even if it’s two other teams. I’m not going to go to a sports bar for that.

The person I really miss for Big Monday games is Jon Sundvold. I thought he was much better than Fraschilla. I’m a little surprised at all the love for Fraschilla on here.

A Basketball post by SLX, I was under the impression that you were KIA and gone to where ever you would go…..
I will take Coach Knight over 99% of the guys that analyze basketball , Musberger was just a throw in, in this trade.
Ron Franklin was 2-3 passes behind the action for several years now and Fran would talk to 6th graders about BB, no offense to 6th graders out there.
Coach Knight has great little nuggets of BB knowledge if you listen to him, he has mellowed a lot from chairs and MMA choke holds. He will make the games more interesting IMO.

I would pitch in to have Dave South do the Big 12 games.

  28. I watched way too much B12 basketball one year. The reason I know is that I was completing Sundvold’s sentences.

  29. I will second Sunvold. liked him a lot.

Franklin has been great. but…I’ve liked Knight so far. Fran gave us mucho props, but Knight has always been highly complementary of Texas since he landed at TT.

    now Musburger…eh. whatever.

I really don’t want to repeat the horrid situation of the past few years where we starved for depth and talent at DT. It’s critical not to let defensive line recruiting slip. That said, if we bring in two tackles and two ends this year that would be 21 scholarships used on the

So your number is 25 max.
