I’m writing this from Fallujah. Or at least San Francisco’s version of same. I’m being buzzed by the Blue Angels, who are doing practice runs over my pad for Fleet Week. My place is about 25 yards from the ocean and FA-18 Hornets are screaming over me, spinning wildly, and firing imaginary Sidewinders at Coit Tower. I just went up and on my roof deck and had a plane pass so close that I actually called out, “Americaaaaaah! Fuck Yeahhhhhh!”
I’m so juiced with patriotism right now I’m considering downloading a Toby Keith song. Please stop me.

Quick Fleet Week story:
I’m driving through North Beach a couple of years ago and there are quite a few sailors, mostly in civilian clothes, enjoying their time away from sea – gawking at San Francisco’s beauty, drinking, and contracting diseases from various Asian prostitutes. Good times and I’m happy that our boys are getting a break from the prison of sea life.
While I chat idly on my cell phone at a stoplight, I gaze down a sidestreet and I see a uniformed enlisted sailor walking down the street and he’s literally boucing with joy at each step. Literally skipping with elation. I’m thinking, ah, cool this kid just hooked up with some chick and now he’s walking to meet his buddies and tell them about it. As I look closer, I realize that his sailor outfit has a small twist: the entire ass section has been removed and his naked buttocks are gloriously revealed to all passers by. That’s not a sailor, I quickly conclude. Though my father, former Army man, would argue that this confirmed that he was a sailor, probably an admiral, and likely an Annapolis graduate. Rum, sodomy, lash.
What a glorious slate of games this week.
We’ve got crisp autumn weather in most of the country, the conference races begin in earnest, and the scent of upset lingers over the college football landscape like Eva Peron on an Argentine general.
If you care to contrast the difference between the NFL and college football, consider that there are a dozen games Thursday/Saturday that I’m keenly interested in while there isn’t a single NFL game this weekend that demands watching beyond pulling for various Fantasy Football statlines. Let’s wade in, because the fun starts early:
Thursday
9:00 PM ET No. 21 Nebraska at No. 24 Missouri ESPN
I’m jacked for this game. The Big 12 North race will be decided here – yes, even KU’s hopes are pinned on this game in some fashion. A third consecutive Missouri win over Nebraska absolutely crushes every ounce of momentum Pelini has built in Lincoln and I expect Nebraska to play with real desperation. The rainy weather in Columbia provides an interesting X factor. This game is all about which young QB gets it done. Here’s what my most favoritest blogger thinks. Atomic Teeth says Blackshirt, Smackshirt.
12:00 PM ET No. 17 Auburn at Arkansas ESPN
As a football purist, this is a game you have to look forward to seeing and a good example of why the SEC is the premier conference – league depth. An Auburn win pushes them into my Top 10 and I’m not being overly dramatic when I offer that Arkansas’ entire season rests on this outcome. Check their upcoming schedule if you disagree. Petrino vs. Malzahn on O. Good stuff.
12:21 PM ET Georgia at Tennessee ESPN 360/Gameplan
Desperation games are fun. If Georgia loses, things start to get uncomfortable for Richt. He won’t be on the hot seat, but the natives will be gathering kindling. That has implications for us, obviously. Kiffin needs a home win. Fans will forgive road losses under a new regime, but when a Tennessean ponies up all of their personal injury settlement money for tickets at Neyland, you better win a game or two. Kiffin is 1-2 at Neyland (a W over W Kentucky) and 1-3 would be received with bad humor. You also get to watch Jonathan Crompton and Joe Cox play QB, which is always good for laughs.
12:30 PM ET No. 15 Oklahoma State at Texas A&M
I have a scouting interest, what can I say? Very curious to see how A&M rebounds from humiliation and how Gundy handles an offense without Dez Bryant. Why wouldn’t A&M overload the box and dare OSU to beat them? And what about the loss of Bryant as a field flipper in punt returns? You really want to give A&M 5.5 points in this one? If the Aggies can’t solve this gift wrapped offering, the Aggies need to think about basketball season.
3:30 PM ET No. 3 Alabama at No. 20 Mississippi CBS
It’s all shaking out in the SEC this weekend, isn’t it? Ole Miss can play defense and that’s their only real hope. Jevan Snead has been terrible so far.
3:30 PM ET Baylor at No. 19 Oklahoma ABC
Oklahoma is fantastic at home and as for Baylor: no Griffin, no chance. Does Bradford play? Does he shut it down for the year? I’m curious.
7:00 PM ET Stanford at Oregon State This will tell me a great deal about Stanford and if they have a legit dark horse shot at a Pac 10 title, which would be glorious. Winning in Corvallis is not easy and Oregon State is pretty respectable. Great RB duel between Jacquizz and Toby Gerhart.
7:15 PM ET Colorado at No. 2 Texas ESPN Gotta watch the Horns obviously, but set that TIVO so you can flip back and forth with…
8:00 PM ET No. 1 Florida at No. 4 LSU CBS Death Valley. Night Game. Uncertain Tebow status. Florida’s first real test of the season. LSU will be good for a dozen major mental mistakes. Les Miles will fake punt on 4th and 21 from his own 9 yard line. Florida will try to convert 3rd and 2 without Tebow by running halfback option passes. This game will be ugly, intense, fun, and entirely riveting.
What games are must-see for you?

You’re a west coaster, Scipio.
I’m surprised you left out Oregon at UCLA. I’m curious to see if Prince plays QB for the bruins and I would like to see UCLA’s D against what has been a high flying Oregon club in the last two games.
There are also two very big Big 10 games.
Wisky at tOSU
And Mich at undefeated Iowa. I know this is the same time as the battle in Baton Rouge. I have the horns game on Tivo and will be flipping back and forth between these two games in the second half.

Good catch, GHD.
I think the Oregon game interest to me is how Costa does filling in for Masoli (bum knee). Also, are they just a creature of Autzen?
I’m just really tired of the Big 10 right now. I didn’t have it in me to list them.

It was a few years ago when I had just turned down a side street in my subdivision, heard a roar, looked up, and saw one of the Thunderbirds flying directly overhead…. practicing for the show at Ellington a few miles away. Exceptionally cool.

Your Fleet Week story reminds of the first (and only) time I stumbled onto the Folsom Street Festival. More ass-out chaps than I care to have seen.
Is it bad that I will be at the Texas game wishing I was at home watching UF @ LSU?

I think your suspicions will ring true regarding Oregon. I have seen them play 3 full games this year and haven’t been impressed. I missed the beatdown they gave Cal and thankfully so since I had money on Cal, but I think they lack the offensive team speed of recent duck teams.
I hear you on the Big Ten but Michigan has been involved in some exciting football games this year. Also, we will find out how real Wisconsin is.

Mizzou-NU: when two teams are this even, go with the home team. Especially on these weekday primetime college matches. The home crowd always gets the D going early, and even if the O doesn’t roll, they’ll eventually start in the second half. I got Mizzou in a runaway. Or at least, to cover. Hell, I’m putting a nice spot on Mizzou straight-up. I don’t need no stinkin’ spread for this one.

Man I just realized what I typed above didn’t make any sense. I meant to say, I’m taking them straight-up, no spread needed.

Happiness is having an 11AM SEC alternative to whatever midwest shit-fest the Big Ten is bringing to us at that time.
Sherman has simply got to figure out the college game quicker than he is – how does a 2 time NFL playcaller shit the bed that bad in Arlington? I’m really curious how we look in this one. The remaining Ok. St. WR’s are beyond awful – and I say that fully aware they might go for 350 and 3 td’s against our secondary.
I do have a cusory interest in Rich Rod v. Iowa – never quite been able to shake my Kirk Ferentz fan-club membership.

Zero interest in Tennessee vs. Georgia (I feel like I’ve seen Georgia play 10 games already) but all good elsewhere. Watchin some, tivo rest.
Games I’m excited to watch are Obvious N, OSU v A&M, Florida v LSU
I will watch the others, but not exactly excited…least excited about Texas v Colorado (sorry)…just think it will be a very boring beheading.

How lovely is it to see a solid Big 12 matchup on a Thurs? Doesn’t seem to happen too often. Definitely a reason to start the weekend early by imbibing.
Fleet Week brings back memories for me. I never was much into aviation but damn the Blue Angels do kick ass. Scip, you don’t live in the house from Full House fame do you?
I’ll tell you what’s fun. When the hydros are running on Lake Washington in Seattle and the Blue Angels buzz all the boats hanging out on the log boom. Tits, beer, and the potential of amazing boat crashes. Tough to beat.

Muschamp loves to make fun of Georgia whenever he speaks. Sure, the legacy ties are there but I doubt they could ultimately trump what he’s walking into with the Texas job. He’s got two deep talent across the board, top notch facilities at a caché university, a substantial pile of cash, and a fertile recruiting base. Just add water. Or blood.
He also knows his path the national championship is easier in the Big 12 than the SEC.
But it would certainly make for some restless weeks while the offer was presented.

Okie State will throttle A&M.
The Aggie OL, already horrid, will get more pathetic each week as injuries take their toll.
And the Okie State offense sans Dez still gets to play against the worst db’s this side of Boulder and with a seasoned and talented QB and some decent skill players. That’s all it needs to score in the high 30’s against this Aggie crew.

Concerning Muschamp and Georgia, even Lies Miles was smart enough to bypass the alma mater in favor of a better gig. Of course, now the more I think about it, Miles was already getting HC pay.
Shit, now I’m a little concerned….
FUCK! MUSCHAMP IS LEAVING US FOR GEORGIA….
That would fucking blow.

The UCLA – Oregon game will be one to watch. I watched Costa in high school and had the USC bound banter all around him here in NorCal. But, he shunned Pete and went to Eugene.
Scipio – I am surprised you didn’t mention this game:
Univ. of Minnesota – Crookston vs. St. Cloud State University
It’s homecoming and the game will be a RED OUT.

Back in the mid-90’s, I coached my daughter’s rec league soccer team, aka The Blue Angels. The real Angels were performing at a weekend airshow that fall. When we learned they were rehearsing their show on Friday afternoon for the benefit of some charities, my wife called to see if The Blue Angels could be photographed with The Blue Angels. The organizers were nice enough to invite us and the pictures were taken with both teams beneath the Flight Leader’s cockpit. Quite a thrill and the pilots seemed to enjoy it as much as the girls.

well besides a vested interest in my team, the FSU vs GT game should provide a soap opera theme with the embattled Bobby versus the young, ignorant, ingrates that don’t remember when it was the Gators, that Jewish school in Coral Gables …and Half Ass U. Honestly, before Bowden they were Utah State with high humidity.
However, Bobby needs to have bowed out gracefully about 5 years ago.
But they are having an “Unconquered” Black -out in the stands to show their support for regime change.
Me, I’m with the White and Gold engineering crowd. Do they rally ’round the Coach or do they just give up and take what they got coming from Ramblin Reck? Sorry no free shoes, you.

Depends totally on what he’s been told regarding Mack’s future.
Coaches change jobs constantly. Georgia’s a good job. I’m sure he’d listen. It is, after all, just a job.
Scipio Tex said:

Georgia is a Top 10-12 job. Texas is a Top 3 job. Obviously, Muschamp knows that. The question is his own personal head coaching timeline and Mack’s exit timeline.

I didn’t realize that he was born in, and graduated from, Georgia. Very interesting.
We obviously went through something similar at Kansas with Self and Okie State a couple years back, so I can sympathize – although I never really believed he was going anywhere and OSU on a bball scale is probably a rung below UGA on the football ladder.
Scipio Tex said:
October 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Yeah, KU is a top 5 basketball program. OSU is borderline Top 25. Pretty substantial difference. And Self already HAD the KU job. So another big difference.

I think he has to look at it like this… If I go and coach a clemson or a virginia or some team like that, I would have to coach 4 to 5 years at a high level to be able to go up the ladder to a higher tier team like a UT or a LSU , so why not stay in a city that my family loves and get paid alot of money while I’m learning all the ins and outs of the entire process of coaching, and then in 4 to 5 years get the best job in the country, its really just a matter of how he wants to get their, same end result just different paths.. If UT wins big it’s because muschamp is a genius , if UT loses its because muschamp isnt the head coach , its a win win right now for coach boom.

Muschamp and Brown both contend that there was no timetable of any kind set in regards to when Brown would step down. Are we all in agreement that this is, well, a lie? I have to believe that at the very least, Muschamp would have at some point had to ask “So, what are we talking about here? Two years? Five? 10?”.
And I’ve thought from the beginning that the chances of Muschamp succeeding Brown were about 50/50. I just don’t think Brown is going to hang it up any time soon.

program wise I was getting at KU bball = TExas football, whereas UGA football > OSu basketball.
But already having the job, I did neglect to mention, and that did have to be a very big difference. Having just won a national title likely didn’t hurt either.

I’m interested in the Michigan game, if for no other reason than (I believe) they are the only school still ahead of UT in total wins. So even though I really like the Mich fans I’ve met, and appreciate that they win and still maintain academic credibility, I root for them to lose.
And it doesn’t hurt that RichRod is a douche.
