Mack Brown compliments Cody Hawkins. I think.

Posted by HenryJames on October 6th, 2009 under Football

From yesterday’s press conference.

Yes, we actually had Cody here at our camp. He came down and spent time with us. I think Major was coaching him at that time when he was a graduate assistant. Cody is a lot like Colt. He is tough, he’s smart, he makes good decisions, and you’re not going to rattle him. Every time he gets knocked down, he jumps up before they get off the field and he is a very good football player. They are throwing the ball more this year than they did last year, and he’s throwing it at a very high rate.

You can say a lot of things about Hawkins (all most of them bad), but you cannot deny that he’s throwing the ball at a very high rate. I think.

  1. Of all the plays run by Colorado this year, Hawkins has been right there for most of them.

He’ll help CU get those 10 wins any year now..

That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard Mack say. “Well, we kind of thought he sucked and look forward to playing him a couple of times, but he’s a tough kid that we have a lot of admiration and respect for.”

  4. And like Colt, Cody completely buys into the head coach family atmosphere. Totally commited to a successive season.

  5. So his best two characteristics are that he’s good at getting hit and he throws alot.

  6. My favorite quote from the press conference:

On the mental strain of the season and breaking it into sections: The mental strain over the year, for me, gets long and hard.

I read it, told myself I was too mature to laugh at that, then reread it and decided I’m nowhere close.

  7. “So his best two characteristics are that he’s good at getting hit and he throws alot.” No no no – it’s that he throws a lot when they call pass plays. Heady player, young Hawkins.

And also, he’s alive. That’s a big ol’ check mark in Cody’s “plus” column.

I don’t understand what Brown’s talking about. But here’s the defining moment of Hawkins’s career so far; pay special attention to his form tackle at the :08 second mark:

The most important quality I look for in a QB is the ability to rise off the turf before his team gets off the field. If said player can jump up….. well then… that’s something.

There is an old story of Gene Stallings as a young assistant to Bear Bryant at Alabama, explaining his theory of recruiting. Stallings said that he was looking to sign guys that get up when they’re knocked down by bigger guys. And when they’re knocked down again, they get up again. And when that guy knocks them down a third time, they get up again ready for more. Bryant started shaking his head. “No, no, no. That big guy that keeps knocking your little guy down? That’s the guy I want you to sign.”

  11. That’s a great story, TaylorT and just goes to show what passes for revolutionary thinking in football sometimes.

I think that about sums up mine and Sonny Hawkins athletic careers.

It’s not Brown’s fault they made a bad call. It is Brown’s fault giving the ball up there. In his defense, he was in a pretty sick spot in the corner. Not in his defense, he is allowed to dribble and shouldn’t BE in the corner in the first place.

On the Barnes talk, I really don’t have enough Bball knowledge to have an ultimate opinion, only some preliminary thoughts/questions:

This may seem arrogant but I believe its true – if you are a coach in virtually any sport at UT, you will be a good recruiter. The state is loaded with athletes, including basketball

A quick recap of yesterday’s action before we get to today’s tilts.

I knew what you meant with the homer comment.

I agree that it mostly comes down to Denmon and English shooting well again. They don’t have set career highs, but they do have to at least hit their season averages for Mizzou to have a chance.

    Barnes’ three “strengths”:

    Defense, rebounding, recruiting.

This team just proved the first two are non-existent (out-rebounded by 25; fucking KIDDING me?) and the last one is over-hyped as well. Every ESPN basketball recruiting analyst who actually had Bradley ahead of Wall should be taken out back and executed Inglourious Basterds style.
