Favre Delivers Record Ratings For ESPN

Posted by srr50 on October 6th, 2009 under Football

Brett Favre not only dug the knife a little deeper into his old team by leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 30-23 win over the Green Bay Packers last night, he also helped produce the largest TV audience in cable history for ESPN.

Over 21 million viewers tuned in to watch the latest chapter of the NFL’s Soap Opera as Favre threw for three touchdowns to help the Vikings go 4-0 on the season. The game earned a 15.3 rating, representing 15,136,000 homes (21,839,000 viewers), surpassing the previous cable viewership record, ESPN’s Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys Monday Night Football telecast of September 15, 2008 (12,953,000 homes, based on a 13.3 rating, 18,608,000).

Favre and the Vikings helped ESPN have the #1 primtime show — broadcast or cable — for Monday night.

The only non-NFL sporting event to garner higher ratings this year is the BCS championship game, which had almost 27 million viewers. No World Series or NBA Finals game in the past five years has drawn at least 21.8 million viewers, and the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game has not drawn at least 21.8 million since 2005.

The Vikings will be in Green Bay in four weeks.

Fox can hardly wait.

  1. I could only watch about ten minutes before I felt the urge to put on a pair of wranglers and heave a bottle of vicodin into double coverage.

  2. Kenny Vaccaro could kick Brett Favre’s ass.

    Wait a second — I thought Favre retired …?

This comment will not be surpassed.

In other news, I would still pay money to watch Brett Favre throw footballs to suspended truck tires, much less NFL receivers. That throw to Sydney Rice in the endzone in the first half last night was amazing. Favre is still the only guy in the league that can make that throw.

  5. I’m not sure if everyone was aware of this, but Favre is almost 40. No word yet on whether he will celebrate his 40th with a party at Colt and Jordan’s apartment by playing 50 cent on Macks ipod.

  6. Gundy looks way younger than Favre.

The General – Said the same thing to my friend last night. Just a cannon. That’s what gets him in trouble, I guess.

I love after plays like that when the POV is from behind the LOS. That window was narrow.

  7. I bet the Jets wish Favre had done P90X before the ‘08 season.

  8. Sailor Ripley looks way better at 40 than Favre. Just sayin…

I heard it was going to be a live musical performance featuring Dennis Greene on the drums. Holmgren will be running a little late too. Apparently he’s having trouble with his Harley.
