Jackson Jeffcoat and His Official Visit to Austin

Posted by Trips Right on September 15th, 2009 under Football, Recruiting

Unless you live in a cave you’ve probably already heard that 5 star recruit and possibly the best defensive end in the land is taking his official visit this weekend for the Texas Tech game. More importantly, his dad and University of Houston defensive line coach Jim Jeffcoat will be joining the stud defensive lineman. This is ABSOLUTELY huge news based on the circumstances and timing. Let’s think this through.

First, Jeffcoat’s recruitment was supposed to go in to January as he’s being chased by the big dogs OU, USC, along with Texas. An early official visit indicates he might want the recruitment over sooner rather than later.

Second, his dad will be joining Jackson for the weekend and will be watching the game intently seeing as how the Cougars will be facing the very same Texas Tech squad next weekend in Houston. The is a golden opportunity for the Longhorns to sell their defense. In all probability Coach Jeffcoat will be scouting the Red Raiders with input from the defensive maestro, Coach Muschamp. If Coach Boom shines the way we think, the elder Jeffcoat can’t help but be impressed.

Third, this game will have the hype and pageantry unlike any other Texas home game on the schedule. It’s the perfect showcase game for a war daddy like Jeffcoat because it’s a night game with a Gameday backdrop and over 100,000 screaming Texas fans.

Fourth, Alex Okafor will prove to the Jeffcoats that playing time for freshmen is readily available if that freshman lives up to his billing. Can’t say the same thing for ou with RJ Jackson Washington..

And finally, there isn’t a better offense to face if you’re looking to impress a pass rushing defensive end. There will be opportunities galore for sacks and pressure, and if Scipio’s prognostications are correct, I look for the Horns to have a great deal of success.

Which means Jackson and his pappa should be impressed.

  1. Will he be at your tailgate?

  2. Is there not a chance this kid ends up playing for Daddy in Houston?

  3. I think his visit has more to do with Plano West playing Naaman Forest on Friday night, which means Jeffcoat will likely play his last down sometime in the mid 2nd quarter.

I don’t think you can read too much into when a guy visits, especially a guy like Jeffcoat. He’ll take all 5 of his visits and enjoy himself.

The only way this kid ends up in Houston is if the Texans draft him in 4-5 years. The elder Jeffcoat will probably be following Sumlin on to bigger and better things. If it’s a prestigous school, we might have cause for concern.

The write-up hits on all the high points. The atmosphere will be better than anything he’s going to see at a USC game. Hopefully Muschamp and Co. can put on a show on D. Aside from Okafor having a good game, it would be nice to also convey to the Jeffcoats that Kindle really hit his stride after Muschamp showed up. Our depth at DE is good but shouldn’t be daunting to a stud like JJ. We’re the perfect school for him, hopefully he thinks likewise.

Too bad we can’t get Hicks in this weekend as well.

  5. RJ Washington at OU.

  6. UH just played Ok. State last week so maybe a chance for Muschamp and company to pick the elder Jeffcoat’s brain as well.

It’s nice that timing worked out for us for a change.

  7. “RJ Washington at OU.”

Let that serve as a lesson young Jeffcoat. Two years with stoops and people will wonder what happened to that “Jackson Jefferson kid”…

  8. Good call, Ag. Jeffcoat probably has no real interest in visiting Austin for UT’s biggest home game of the year with the ESPN GameDay crew in attendance.

  9. Just loop Tre Newton’s Wyoming highlight reel. This is what we do for Cowboy legacies!

Word on the street in Plano is that he dropped OU out of picture given some “dead period” phone calls from Mr Shipp. Dad thought if you can’t be trusted with the little things then…
We’ll find out if that is true at some point.

  11. That is good news if true but I’m skeptical. A former professional athlete that now coaches college ball in the state of Texas doesn’t already know that Shipp and OU are dirty?

  12. I don’t see U of H as a threat given that Sumlin isn’t likely to coach there too much longer. Elder Jeffcoat would also like a NFL gig.

    tangentorange:

I’ve heard the same. Jeffcoat definitely mentioned this an interview, but it’s inference that he’s referring to OU. I’ve always thought USC was our competition here anyway.

    Scipio:

I concur, I always thought it would come down to USC or us anyhow. If it comes down to game atmosphere, the LA Coliseum VS DKR on a gameday, there if no comparision.

  14. Does anyone have updated info on Jordan Hicks? When is he coming to Austin and how his visit to Columbus went?

Trips, do you think we’ve got a good shot to land him and what are your thoughts on him?

  15. Jordan is coming for the Colorado game. I’m sure his visit to Columbus went well. They didn’t lack for crowd atmosphere. I’d also be concerned that he got to see a USC showcase as well.

Hicks will be in town for the Colorado game. By all accounts he loved his trip to Ohio St., but that’s the standard answer. A kid could get the clap on a visit and would just be happy to have gotten laid.

Someone tell me the disparity between Jeffcoat and Wilson. I know Jeffcoat is more of a finished product, but what about aggression, first step and the like?

  17. Hicks visit is set for the Colorado game.

  18. Jeffcoat obviously has the physical skills but what separates him is that he’s incredibly sophisticated. He has been taught from birth by one of the headiest DEs in NFL history. So his skill set is pretty much perfect. He uses his hands better than any player on our current roster. He plays in a read and react defense so people watch his film and assume he lacks a first step. That’s the scheme more than Jeffcoat.

It’s not unreasonable to imagine Jeffcoat moving inside one day, but I like him as a SDE.

Wilson is a pure talent balla with great feet and a great work ethic. He hasn’t been playing football for long. Look – anytime we have a recruit with roots in West Africa who is tearing it up, that’s a no-brainer signature. They’re going to bring a maturity and work ethic that we prize. I like him as a Buck LB/End.

They’re both elite and I want both.

  19. So we got Acho and E. Jones at SDE next year as Seniors. That might mean very little playing time right away from JJ but it also means the position is all his after they leave.

  20. I imagine Jeffcoat’s PT as a freshman would be comparable to Alex Okafor’s.

  21. magnusbleuveigner said:

    September 15th, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Then I must pose this question. If he projects to SDE, is it going to be hard to sell him on the merits of Kindle and Okafor. We throw that Buck term around like it’s a selling point, we tried it to no avail last year with Kennard, but I don’t see him as having the explosion necessary. He on one side, Wilson on the other, Bible and Dorsey in the fucking middle? Cripes, that’s studly. Best DL class ever if we land him.

Dick, don’t forget Whaley at one of the DE’s. That guy will never be a RB at Texas. They might as well switch him now.

  23. dick –

It’s permissible to go 2-3 deep with studs and find PT for all of them.

    magnus –

What someone imagines themselves to be and what someone project to be are different things.

I doubt Whaley can play DE effectively. Short arms.

  24. Okafor is clearly the backup at the Buck/WDE position behind Kindle and shares meaninful snaps. E. Jones and Acho won’t allow that to happen next year at SDE, Mack probably won’t either. That might be a sticking point if playing right away is an issue with the kid or his dad. Yes, that could be a ridiculous front 4 in 2-3 years.

  25. I agree that we can find space for a stud like Jeffcoat, but I’m sure he and his dad are smart and evaluate our depth chart, see the above average Sr players on the 2 deep, and have questions about meaninful PT at the SDE position next year. Again, I have no idea if this is even a sticking point for them. They really haven’t shared with the public that time of info. He could almost guarantee himself a starting role for 3 years by coming here. Hopefully that is more important than true frosh PT.

  26. We move these guys around enough around the line (Acho may play inside half the time in ‘10) that I really can’t imagine it will be a problem finding PT for Jeffcoat as a freshman, if that’s even a sticking point.

  27. They won’t find much comfort in either OU or USC’s depth chart at DE, will they dick?

    nordberg – ‘zactly.

USC is just as stacked as us at DE. They’re also the odds on favorites to land Ronald Powell out of their own backyard.

I like our chances a lot.

I also like the way the Jeffcoats handle the circus. Business-like.

  29. The post and the comments are arousing my recruiting bone.

“The post and the comments are arousing my recruiting bone.”

jc25, better keep the bone inside, as Huckleberry just might “Kanye West” it.

  31. Yeah jc, I didn’t want to be the first to admit it, but it moved…

In regards to PT, USC stacks up 5 star DE’s like cordwood and ou’s RJ Jackson Washington Quincy Adams can’t get on the field…

  32. USC for some reason doesn’t have problems getting 5 star recruits to commit with 5 star upper classmen stacked ahead of them on the 2 deep. I don’t see OU as a player on this one, never have.

For the record, I think JJ is ours. Is this his first official visit? Has he made or planned any others?

  33. He uses his hands better than any player on our current roster.

I still think no defensive lineman used his hands more effectively than Tate Pittman.

I’m pretty sure this is the only one planned so far. The whole OU perception is based on his sister going there. Well atleast most of it. I think they also said he could play basketball.

It’s us vs. USC just like last year with Kennard. This time he’s in our recruting wheel-house.

  35. It seem we get a large number of offspring of NFL players. Off the top of my head- Simms, Studdard, Sendlein, Gilbert, Newton. Is that pretty normal and I just notice it because I follow Texas, or do we get more than our share?

  36. Well if it’s between us and USC, and he leaves for USC, then the kid has been waiting to leave Texas all his life, cause I don’t see much of a difference between the two schools. In which case, staying home and playing for UT would the the ultimate gig — he gets to play for a powerhouse, gets daily showcases on the national stage, and has a great shot at the NFL. But like I said, if he chooses USC, it means we never had a chance, cause the kid always wanted to bail on the State since Day 1.

  37. I don’t think that’s necessarily true, yojimbox. I think USC really appeals to a certain type of recruit: those with a “Hollywood” mentality, not just those desperate to get out of state. Everything I’ve read about Jeffcoat has said that he doesn’t have that type of personality. Seastrunk seems more like a USC type recruit.

  38. “They won’t find much comfort in either OU or USC’s depth chart at DE, will they dick?”

Even assuming the dead period allegations are crap, I still think this factor pretty much takes OU out of the picture. Between RJ Washington, Jeremy Beal, David King, and Frank Alexander, OU’s got their 4 for next year set, and Justin Chaisson, aka “the defendant”, will probably be the 5th.

  39. You meant take the fifth Nate.

  40. Vandelay shoots, Vandelay scores!

  41. George, er, I mean Art, I salute you Sir!!!

  42. I would not want to visit with my Dad. Dad is coming to make sure his son does not get into any promiscuous problems with some hot Longhorn groupies. That is some great veteran wisdom from the elder Jeffcoat. Good job pops!

  43. I peered into my crystal football and I saw Jackson Jeffcoat playing DT in the NFL like his old man. He looks like Cory Redding back in the day.

  44. Travis:

Jim J was a DE, amigo.

  45. “I think USC really appeals to a certain type of recruit: those with a “Hollywood” mentality, not just those desperate to get out of state.”

It also appeals to defensive recruits that like to get drafted.

I think Jeffcoat ends up as a 5 tech, and if his father sees that, it may help Texas as we are playing more 3-4.

Also, I have a few buddies that played college d-line, and to a man, they all say that learning to play with your hands is the most difficult d-line skill to learn.

Jeffcoat is a good a technical defensive line prospect as I have seen.

  46. You bastards make me sick. It’s like Caligula’s Rome around here. The blond, the brunette? Fuck it, I’ll take both. Why don’t you guys jump up to the NFC South and leave us poor college teams alone?

  47. “It seem we get a large number of offspring of NFL players. Off the top of my head- Simms, Studdard, Sendlein, Gilbert, Newton. ”

You can add the Hills brothers.

  48. Well, shit. He still looks DTish to me but I’ve already exemplified I am an idoit. Crystal football outlook for me appears to be more dumbass.

  49. Jackson’s dad is a huge figure in Cowboys’ lore. They know the value of making a name in the football-crazed state of Texas. Jackson has the tools to become one of the all-time greats. He can’t do better than have Muschamp & Co. developing him at a school with all that Texas has to offer. This gives me confidence that when they weigh all their options, the scale will tilt in the Horns’ favor.

  50. blackscholes said:

dick – you are absolutely clueless re the playing time available next year at DE. Muschamp – not Mack – will play the kid who makes the defense better. If that’s Eddie Jones giving up snaps to a freshman, then so be it. If you’re planning for the long-term, no kid getting the counsel Jeffcoat is is going to focus on 10-15 snaps either way in his first year on campus.

Call it SC vs Texas. Both get you where you want to go, both on and off the field. It probably comes down to factors we might completely discount. Proximity is a factor now, but Dad is very much in the job market.

Wonder what Dad’s take is on Giles?

  51. Art, no I didn’t. Much like Sergio Kindle, it’s all “alleged”. Sergio was texting (driving drunk and lying to the cops), and Chaisson was involved in a minor altercation (assaulting and kidnapping his ex-girlfriend).

It all gets lost in translation, does it not?

  52. blackscholes said:

Not if you have a full set of teeth.

  53. Everbody that has ever been pulled over has lied to a cop.

Not everybody has held a screwdriver to a girl’s throat and threatened to kill her and leave her in the desert.

  54. “Much like Sergio Kindle, it’s all “alleged”.

One itty bitty tiny wittle difference though is that Sergio wasn’t charged with committing a crime.

  55. I’m really hoping that Nate’s comment was just sarcasm.

  56. Did I just read Nate equate a car accident with kidnapping/assault, for which he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge? You’ve jumped the shark. You’ve lost your mind.

  57. Nate also called kidnapping a girl, driving her to the middle of the desert, holding a screwdriver to her neck and threatening to kill her “a minor altercation.”

Although, to be fair, I guess that in Oklahoma that really is no big thang.

  58. I think Nate’s sarcasm definitely got lost in translation, probably because diminishing the significance of an assault by screwdriver charge typically doesn’t go over well with an opposing fanbase. It’s reeks of Stoopsian PR tactics.

Sergio, meanwhile, has perfected his texting while driving skills to the point of being able exit Mopac & Windsor with his feet while double thumbing sweet nothings to a Texas Angel.

I don’t think Jeremy Beal can do that.

  59. So which stud, experienced DE should be benched in favor of stud, inexperienced RJ Washington? I don’t think his selecting OU was based on early playing time.

  60. Ponderos Iis a complete fucking retard who has nothing better to do than come here, drop bullshit and contribute zero to the discussion.

And Austin English was a stud when he was a sophmore. Now? Eh, not so much.

  61. It also appeals to defensive recruits that like to get drafted.

    That too.

  62. It also appeals to defensive recruits that like to get drafted.

If you’re good, you’ll get drafted, in Texas or SC. Both are big-time programs with major face-time on national TV. What’s the difference? It’s not like just wearing the SC colors will automatically get him drafted. He still has to produce on the field. My comment still stands.

  63. On visits, you are with your kid up until Saturday night, when the recruit gets to go out with some members of the team. Parents get to meet with academic people and coaches and then are taken back to the hotel. On our visits, my son never came back to the hotel before 3:00 A.M. They have a very good time away from the parents.

  64. My comment still stands.

Your comment was damn silly, implying that the only reason he would go to USC would be that he’s desperate to leave the state. And that’s patently absurd.
