Florida Gators -28 vs Tennessee Volunteers: Lay The Points

Posted by srr50 on September 15th, 2009 under Football

Florida enters this week’s game with Tennessee a four-touchdown favorite.

It’s not enough.

Florida coach Urban Meyer says he holds Tennessee defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin in great admiration — his son, not so much.

New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin spent most of his first few months on the job poking the Gators with a stick, including accusing Meyer of recruiting violations.

Addressing a booster gathering the day after national signing day, while boasting how the Vols had stolen two recruits who had committed to Florida, Kiffin accused Meyer of an NCAA violation for calling wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson while he was on his official visit to Tennessee.

As it turns out, it was not a violation, and Kiffin was reprimanded by the SEC. He then apologized to Meyer and Florida.

Then there was Lane’s remarks at his hiring.

“I’m really looking forward to embracing some of the great traditions at the University of Tennessee, for instance the Vol Walk, running through the T, singing ‘Rocky Top’
all night long after we beat Florida next year,”
Kiffin said. “It will be a blast.”

Yes it will.

  1. Interesting. I’m also wondering about the Tulsa v OU game. I believe the line is OU -14.

If Tulsa has a decent defense, I would not be shocked to see Tulsa win that game. Hard to tell though since they’ve played Tulane and New Mexico. Both teams have been blown out in their first two games. Also, this is Tulsa’s 3rd road game to start the season so that could be a factor, but they don’t have too travel far.

  2. I don’t have any particular love for Florida, but Lane Kiffin has behaved like such an insufferable ass since being hired.

I expect that after Urban and the Gators administer the prison-style buttfucking (nothing smooth about this one) that Lane has earned, he’ll learn to keep his mouth shut.

  3. Line opened at 27.5 and is already at 29.5 at some books.

If I were playing it I would wait for it to settle around 30.5-31.5 and then put a unit on Tennessee. I think Meyer turns the defensive hounds loose but I honestly think he respects Monte too much to run it up on offense. The wild card being defensive scores.

Now that I actually typed that out, though, I can’t see putting money on Tennessee.

  4. I missed the Tennessee/UCLA game. Did the Vols play like shit or does Skippy have the Bruins overachieving?

  5. The Vols’ offense is absolutely terrible. That’s why I changed my mind at the end. I don’t see Tennessee getting to double digits and it’s not unreasonable for Florida to get to 40 without running it up.

I’d say it is even odds that the Florida D/Special Teams outscore Tennessee.

I think it’s very unlikely OU covers that line, but I would be absolutely shocked to see Tulsa win that game, even if they have a decent defense. Tulsa has scored 10 sacks so far this year, but they’ve allowed 8. What’s more is that they’ve allowed 15 tackles for loss. Both of these put them in the bottom 20 nationwide. Mind you, this is against New Mexico and Tulane. I just do not see them doing anything offensively against the one real elite strength OU has (the defensive line). I’m thinking 20-14 OU.

As for the UF-Tenn game, I’d take Florida -31. Between defensive/special teams scores, and the Florida offense marching up and down the field at will, Florida could easily cover that without trying to run up the score.

That line is almost as stupid as Texas -17 versus Tech

  9. Were I not absolutely risk averse, UH-OSU was my lock of the century of the week last week.

I’d put good (fake) money on Meyer stomping the shit out of the Vols this week.

Also bullish on Kentucky-Louisville. Kentucky’s not a bad team, though they may not end up going bowling because of their hellish SEC schedule. Louisville is Kragthorpe’d.

  10. OU covers Tulsa. I hate to say it, and I keep bringing it up, but I’ve followed Tulsa football, and while they’re great against conference foes, they are just total shit against big powerhouse schools. I’ve seen it over again. OU covers pretty easily too.

On FL-TN, even if Meyers pulls back the dogs (which is unlikely, the guy doesn’t strike me as very “nice”), the defense will kill Tennessee and create turnovers for scores. That’s what you get for being a douche, Kippen. I ain’t got any sympathy for you, bub.
